Longtime watcher of this channel, first-time commenter. But I learned more about the War of 1812 from this video than I ever did in any of my school history classes. And I was born and raised in Buffalo, THE major city of the Niagara region. I also made many visits to Fort Erie and Fort Niagara growing up, and saw battle recreations. So that's saying something, because elementary history classes there do put a little bit of focus onto the War of 1812. But most of us have a hard time remembering why it started or what happened. And lord knows they tend to omit the parts about us trying to invade Canada. As it happens, not only was this video very detailed, I also found it very fair and even-handed.
@dustindussault2864Ай бұрын
it isn't even minded at all. he left out some major events and context to why things went down the way they did. If you are interested in this topic please do your own research into it. From down playing American war justification to down playing the New England suggestion crisis in the beginning of the war to completely leaving out the burning of Buffalo carried out by Native American and English forces which the predates the American burnings in the Toronto area by weeks.also he up-played the New England crisis after it would have been put down and the english had invaded what is now Maine which kinda brought New Englanders back in the fold to repel that invasion. also New England thought about succession for a second and quickly realized it would hurt them more then anything and they wouldn't make it by themselves. also a point should be made that succession talks where biggest in Connecticut and not New Hampshire. The actual state that has the right to succeed and that the rest of the New England states to get on board even more so then Massachusetts. If they wanted any sort of legitimacy. BTW it has that right due to them being the last state need to ratify the Constitution. they end up with the right of succession due to them ratifying it a day before New York though New York got their the day before with the vote needed, plus they have the coolest slogan... "Live Free or Die" which is a quote from General John Stark. “Live Free or Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils”. he sent this in a message to his men when he couldn't make it to the reunion for the Battle of Bennington in 1809 due to old age. the guy is an absolute legend where I am from. but anyway if you are interested in this topic please do your own research. this video came off as a bash America piece to me much like some of his other videos. some things he is dead on about and other things he flat out leaves out. much like his video on the Korean War where he completely leaves out atrocities committed by North Korean forces even down playing them, while majorly up playing atrocities committed by the South Korean government and US occupation. in my view he is biased toward Eastern Ideology and doesn't fairly or accurately present the facts to these conflicts. He misses much of the context from the western perspective or even the perception of the time. something that kinda offended me as a inhabitant of New England. also the blockade wasn't that effective was there wasn't much down in the Gulf of Mexico which is why the british attacked New Orleans. Strategically this is a nice play as it cuts the last vector of supply and trade to the US. unfortunately at that point Colonel Jackson stopped them cold and routed them.I say unfortunately because I'm not a Jackson fan. after this he gets promoted to General invades Florida during peace time and slaughters the Seminole tribe. after that he really starts planting seeds of Southern Succession and instigating the civil war while President. Well he did kill the british banking system in the US and helped pave the way for the US banking system to be set up... so that is one good thing he did in retrospect. Matter of fact one of his last quotes before his death and one of his most famous. when asked what his greatest accomplishment was he said "I killed the banks." also I've never seen a documentary about the War of 1812 where the invasion of Canada was omitted. Are you thinking about the Revolutionary War? there is an invasion of Canada in that war which was more successful but largely forgotten due the failure to seize Montreal and the heroics of Benedict Arnold in the capture of Toronto. most documentaries I've seen and accounts I've read on 1812 depict the Canadian front as being rather bloody and brutal on both sides not just on the American side of that front. he kinda left out what the British and Native American forces did to build up to the atrocity the Americans did. by conveniently leaving out the atrocities committed by the Natives and British. while we where invading the lakes Region of Canada the british forces where raiding and burning US settlements while the natives would come in and slaughter every man, woman, and child all over the southern shore of Lake Erie which is often sited as what brought New England back to the "Union fold". that and the invasion of what is now Maine when that happened I can imagine most of New Hampshire screaming "Live Free or Die!" as a rallying cry to throw them out. more so when they tried to actually invade northern New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York through Lake Champlain. plus they underestimated Champy there on that one... LOL I had to make fun of that stupid Champy the Monster of Lake Champlain gag that Vermont started.🤣🤣🤣

In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip' We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the Bloody British in our town of New Orleans. Chorus: We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began a-runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We looked down the river and we see'd the British come, There musta been a hundred of 'em beating on the drum, They stepped so high, and they made the bugles ring, And we stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing. (Chorus) Ol' Hick'ry said we can take 'em by suprise If we didn't fire our muskets till we looked 'em in the eyes, We held our fire till we see'd their faces well, And we opened up our guns and really gave them hell. (Chorus) Yeah they ran through the biers and they ran through the brambles, They ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go. They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We fired our guns till the barrel melted down, So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round. We filled him up with bullets and powdered his behind, And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind. We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin' There wasn't as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began a-runnin' On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Yeah they ran through the biers and they ran through the brambles, They ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go. They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!

@@TheToneArchive meny of his videos seem to have an eastern skew to it. I understand when oversimplifying history can skew it one way or another... I just find it disingenuous to talk about the atrocities committed by American forces but don't by the other side... He did this in his Korean War video too. He needs provide context the americans were not the only ones burning cities the natives and british forces would do the same thing to American cities in that area. Also the New England crisis there were riots in Connecticut and they wanted to succeed but the two states that they needed to actually succeed. New Hampshire (has the right to succeed) and Massachusetts (biggest port Boston would probably become the capital or Concord in NH) they looked into it during the first year of the war and quickly saw that they wouldn't make it a year...

"Come all you bold Canadians, I'd have you lend an ear Concerning a fine ditty that would make your courage cheer Concerning an engagement that we had at Sandwich town The courage of those Yankee boys so lately we pulled down There was a bold commander, brave General Brock by name, Took shipping at Niagara and down to York he came. He says, "My gallant heroes, if you'll come along with me, We'll fight those proud Yankees in the west of Canaday! We'll fight those proud Yankees without either dread or fear." We traveled all that night and a part of the next day, With a determination to show them British play. We traveled all that night and a part of the next day, With a determination to conquer or to die. Our commander sent a flag to them and unto them did say, "Deliver up your garrison or we'll fire on you this day." They refused to surrender, but chose to stand their ground. We opened up our great guns and gave them fire a round. Their commander sent a flag to us, for quarters he did call. "Oh, hold your guns, brave British boys, for fear you slay us all Our town you have at your command, our garrison likewise." They brought their arms and grounded them right down before our eyes And now we are all home again, each man is safe and sound May the memory of this conquest all through the Province sound, Success unto our volunteers who did their rights maintain, And to our bold commander, brave General Brock by name!"
