In this episode Margo and Tashira discuss "The Manosphere." From the Institute for Strategic Dialogue: The "manosphere" is an umbrella term that refers to a number of interconnected misogynistic communities. It encompasses multiple types and severities of misogyny - from broader male supremacist discourse to men’s rights activism (MRA) and “involuntary celibates” (incels). Simply put, the manosphere encompasses a range of misogynistic communities that vary from anti-feminism to more explicit, violent rhetoric towards women. This ISD Explainer explores the more extreme and divisive proponents of these online communities.
In this episode Margo & Tashira, chat with Producer Roger about one manosphere influencer in particular, Hannah Pearl Davis, and specifically to remarks she made on her show about how misguided it is to celebrate single moms on Mother's Day...

There's so much to say here - while I don't want to give energy to such foolishness in the manosphere, one can't ignore it or underestimate its negative impact on us all. I love how you three broke down the false "we're just being traditional" illusions of these platforms. Folks have forgotten how to vet influencers, challenge what is being said, and the motives behind the messaging. These conversations are often uncomfortable but also exercises in using your brain and critical thinking skills. Please have more of these types of videos.

I love this conversation, Tashira. You're right that we often avoid these uncomfortable discussions, which is why we were surprised. I also believe that most people in this country lack a comprehensive understanding of political and social ideologies.

I never heard of this lady but she isn’t the first one, which you all stated in the video, who singled out single parents. I noticed it during the Kevin Samuels era and when there were a lot of Black Women tapping into their femininity. We( yes I am a single parent) are labeled Damage Goods. We are disgusting and lower than low. It’s definitely stereotypes that come along with this along with everyone thinking that every single parent has the same situation. I remember reading a post as well as a tweet from women speaking on how much they HATE single parents and culture. I have seen people speak on Rihanna as well saying she is teaching single parenting like it’s a course. They are also harassing a KZbinr named Arnell who was in a long-term relationship and ended up becoming a single parent. It’s funny to me because I know married women who are single parents in their own marriages. It can happen to anybody. Give people respect and grace. People forget life is a journey. Nobody wants to raise a kid by themselves but parents (no matter the sex)who are single are going to make do with what we have.

I am so tired of ignorant people having the biggest platform. Well she better pray she doesn’t become a single mother. It annoys me when people determine if somebody is a good person based on their occupation. Also, there’s a lot of married women who are basically single mothers because their husband doesn’t contribute in any type of way to the household be it financially, emotionally, or help raising the kids.

@@bringjoy3490 This is not an attack against your comment but rather the assumption we have when people like her say such vile things. You said “she better pray she doesn’t become a single mother”; who’s to say she isn’t or wasn’t at some point in her life? I don’t know her and wouldn’t watch her BS content but I find those in the limelight spewing derogatory content (i.e. many rappers) don’t live the life they are promoting (or didn’t lived growing up like so many rappers try to portray). She might be a product of a single parent’s upbringing! 😆

@@regisnyder no problem. I seen and heard about her, she’s 27 and her parents are still together. My whole thing is she’s has a lot of life to live and you’ll never know how things will turn out😃. She reminds me of a friend I had that was very judgmental about single parents (she grew up in a 2 parent home); today she’s a single mother of 3 never been married.

I don’t understand why people have issues with the parent that stayed and are doing the work. It’s not a single mom problem. It’s a deadbeat dad problem. Hold the men that abandoned their children accountable.

@@MarcusBarrett-zi8od absolutely not. When is a family court order actually enforced. If the man doesn’t follow through, they don’t do anything about it. I’ve heard of the manosphere with the Kevin Samuels and Tates of the community. Kevin initially began his social media career by giving style advice to men. I guess along the way he was asked to give self esteem advice and morphed into him bashing all women for not being the type of woman all men want and are attracted to - that being “high quality” men he referred to. He bashed women about their weight & health and finances, but at his untimely death he wasn’t as financially stable as he appeared and he was with a woman who he deemed unfit. I’ve learned that those in the limelight and spew vile and derogatory rhetoric their lives don’t back up what they say or claim to believe. For example: rappers. A lot of rappers have a façade that they come from the hood and lived a violent life when in actuality they attended private performance art schools and lived in quiet cul-de-sacs in subdivisions! This woman could be a byproduct of a single mother and she’s simply taking her pent-up frustration out on all single mothers because hers wasn’t a good parent in her opinion!

11:11 Flawed logic. Just because something is hard doesn’t mean it should be celebrated. Prison is hard, should going there be celebrated? Pearl is right. Women seem not to consider the things most vital to choosing a parent for their child. They choose things that don’t matter at all regarding parental quality and spousal quality, and then want sympathy later when their lives are hard. They pick the guy tall, covered in tats, with an attitude problem, muscles, and good sex, and then wonder why none of that translates to a caring, consistent, hardworking father and husband. Not saying that EXCLUDES that person from being those things, but it does entail that those things are necessarily there. And those women know this…they’re not choosing the bad guys because they thought they were good…no…there’s tons of good guys around them who they know would make great partners and parents but they’re boring to them…they choose the bad guy BECAUSE he is bad. That is extremely selfish and petulant and shouldn’t be celebrated.
