A great video with clear explanations of each step of the workflow -- not only the purpose of the steps, but also what the tools are actually doing. And the spline feature in the tone curve was a bonus. Thank you for making this easy to understand and follow. Just ordered the Terra LUT pack and subscribed. 👍

Some great tips- love the using editable spline idea! If you have an overall 'look' adjustment then maybe adding that at the Timeline level - or adding to an Adjustment Clip (my personal technique) is the easiest way to have that apply across all of the clips without any extra work (or 'bookkeeping' if you add any new shots in)...

Yes, once the look development is finished, those are great techniques. The adjustment layer one is especially interesting in Resolve. Great idea.

Wouldn't it be better to pin middle gray on the tone curve before adjusting it?

Hy Evan, I bought you Terra LUT. Its a creativ Lut. So its no converting from rec 2020 to rec 709, right? I shot in flog2 and added the Terra Lut without converting and it looks good to me. Must I convert it anyway? And if so, why? My timeline is in rec 709. This is allready converting down. Why extra converting with a converter? Thanks for helping me. Best regards!
@EvanSchneider

Hi, great question. You're correct, the Terra LUTs are creative LUTs, which means they're meant to be applied to Rec.709 converted footage. You'll get more accurate results if you convert from the Rec.2020 color space of F-Log2 to Rec.709 first, because Rec.2020 uses different color primaries and requires a transform to convert the colorspace. If it looks good to you, then all good, but you may be missing out on having it look better. I'd recommend placing a CST before the creative LUT converting from F-Log2 Rec.2020 to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. The newest Resolve 19 beta includes support for F-Log2. If you're still in Resolve 18, you can set Arri LogC3 as your input gamma and get similar results.

Why don't you just group the clips and apply the "look" in the post group section? So you don't have to copy the nodes back and forth to all the clips to check the look? And do the individual clip adjustments on the clip level?

My favourite way to work!

There’s a few reasons I don’t use the group nodes during look creation. First, I like to keep track of the changes I’m making. If something works on one clip but it’s automatically applied to the others via a group node and I want to change it, I have to deal with a bunch of undo/redo operations. Also, group nodes don’t support versions, so if I wanted to A/B test a change, I wouldn’t be able to in a post-group node. I also like to use the memories and easily apply looks via cmd+1, cmd+2 etc, and that doesn’t work with groups. But as a general concept, yes, applying your final look to a group node post-clip is definitely a great way to save time in applying it efficiently!

This is a completely uninformed, noob question - do you think I can achieve a look like this with 8 bit footage, or would this be pushing the colors too far?
@EvanSchneider
@EvanSchneider 5 ай бұрын
I think this look actually might work particularly well with 8-bit footage. The highlight compression and pushing the colors towards a more monochromatic tone are relatively "gentle" and may even hide some imperfections. I would just keep an eye out for banding.
