Watching Ale change from pick to finger style and then back to pick again without missing a beat is just so impressive for a nine year old, but yeah Pau's ability on the drums has always been phenomenal and Dany is also incredible going from keyboard to guitar and singing. All three of them were born to do this and they make it look so damn easy yet we all know they put in a lot of hard work to be this good. At their age I was just watching cartoons and playing hide n seek

hahaha yea they were phenoms already. It takes immense work for every musician to learn to do these things, and the truly gifted ones not only learn it faster and more easily but also make it LOOK effortless, and this is what I see with The Warning, from a very young age onward! ROCK ON!

Great song to show off the technical prowess of all three. Pau and Dany are amazing, but I can't take my eyes off of Ale. She's doing so much and making it look so easy. The smile of satisfaction on her face at the end is priceless and that quick nod that's says yeah, we did it, cracks me up every time. My favorite cover for so many reasons.
@don-music

yea Prof I totally agree.. Ale was cutely very happy with herself, as I think was Pau who was also clapping for all three.... Ale is interesting... when you watch the very early video of her learning hysteria, she is clearly still learning it and pushing herself beyond her then-current technical abilities, and the facial expressions and look of struggle on her hands were priceless too... but to see her after she's master a really challenging song, like this, or live hysteria, original sandman, and so on.... the look of satisfaction is like cutely slightly precocious self satisfaction at a job well done. And she makes it look so easy that people just don't notice what she's doing.

I wish they toured with a keyboard so they could play more of their old songs. Also, they could lean into piano and perhaps Ale could use bass pedals to fill in the bottom end of their sound. The control over their instruments that bpth Pau and Ale demonstrate here is remarkable. I think they nailed this cover. When they recorded these cover videos they would play the song over and over and over again until they got it right. One or the other of them would flub something and they'd start over from the beginning. So, Pau's applauding at the conclusion is probably a reflection of relief at having made it through to the end with no major mistakes.
@don-music
@don-music Жыл бұрын
yea, I'd love it if Ale would play keys more, and handle bass with left hand or foot pedals and do chording ala The Doors or Led Zep, or heck even Rush. Seems unlikely, but then there are several tv performances when they were young and Ale was playing keys throughout, at a very young age... so it's not like she wasn't going in that direction for a time. I suspect she's been letting her keyboard skills slide since she's a professional bassist now, but it's not like she couldn't get it back. oh wow! starting over is an inefficient way to rehearse, but it certainly does promote perfectionism, something we know that DPA hold as a very high priority.

Dang... that would be near when they came her to Vancouver, and I literally didn't take in about who they were until a week after they had performed here and I missed it of course. I actually performed at the same (huge!) theater in Vancouver exactly one week before The Warning did.... so at least I get to say that I beat them by one week LoL

Don, thanks once again for all your time on this. I spent the past week in NYC and Philly seeing The Warning play before they jetted off to Europe. The word that keeps coming back to me that sets them apart from many is 'musicality' -- precision, coordination, dynamics, half/full time, rhythmic variations, all that is more than just technical proficiency. You bring up dynamics. There are very few classical pieces everyone knows (1812 overture, Beethoven's 5th, even Sousa marches) that don't use dynamics as a significant part of their interest and longevity. The Warning use the loud/soft contrast really well. For me this gives interest, keeps my attention, and does not fatigue me. I really enjoyed the opening bands for The Warning in the recent shows, but they were mostly all loud-all the time. That wears me out. But I could easily listen to several hours of The Warning live. Their musicality clearly goes to the outstanding training and education they received from early on. Pablo & Beto deserve a huge thumbs up for their significant contribution to The Warning's growth and success. Don, I also had the chance to do meet & greet with them in NYC and Philly this past week. They are so sweet and humble, and Dany has an astonishing memory for names. I think this is yet another thing that makes their story appealing and draws people's interest.
@don-music

Thank you for this "direct feedback from the front lines" comment! Agreed completely, of course, about Pablo and Beto, and the musicality of their performances! That's interesting about Dany's memory for names! One thing that gets overlooked frequently, I think because of her speech mannerisms compared to her sisters, is Dany's intelligence. Yes Pau is obviously a genius, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ale is also. However, I suspect Dany is also, and is not only the true band leader (let's be honest here, she really drove the group to succeed and organizes it frequently and used to rein in her sisters' youthful distractibility, from what I've seen in interviews and heard them and other people describe)... but she's got the biggest repertoire of diverse music memorized in her mind (her midnight shows are ridiculous with what she's been able to pull out of her memory, lyrics and all), has to have all 92% or whatever it is of the lead vocals that she sings, lyrics memorized, and able to be performed on demand at any given moment, specially with the jar song stuff... and is the incredible people-person networker for the band - exuding warmth and joy and welcoming demeanour with everybody she meets, and true empathy of everybody around her at all times, while still displaying professionalism and immense knowledge so, as I watch people talking with her in youtube videos, she makes it clear that you can start planning discussions with her... representing the band almost like a manager would.
@oldmanyeni1663
@oldmanyeni1663 Жыл бұрын
@@don-music Yes, that memorization is completely foreign to me. I was never good at memorizing music (my skill is sightreading. Two weeks ago got handed the bassoon part for Schubert's 8th unfinished symphony 45 minutes before the concert, and I had to transpose and play the part on bari sax without any rehearsal). I can't even imagine adding lyrics to it as well. All three of them are obviously very intelligent. It seems like Dany is the networker, Pau is clearly the business force, and Ale is the stage general. It may not be obvious to folks who have not been on stage, but Ale is well known ( and there are videos showing this) where she knows what everyone should be doing, pointing out to Dany when her pedal settings are wrong, and helping to get things back on track. All three of these jobs are incredible important to any successful act. They seem to have these roles well established and are quite proficient at them. The other thing I took away from the two shows I saw was how much fun they were having. Ale and Pau were smiling with us and each other far more than I have seen in other videos. They just looked like they were having so much fun. In addition, at the end of the Philly show (the end of their US tour leg), they invited all the members of Plush and Holy Wars up on stage with them. There were hugs all around on stage and more than a few dew-eyed audience members. Class act.

Ale's right hand work is crazy. I've played material like this with 16th notes and my right arm is falling off by the end. The part where Dany starts the piano line and THEN ends the guitar part (3:15 in D-M's video) is crazy.

Yes! It's super quick but Dany starts playing the keys with the right hand while doing a fast slide up the fretboard with the left hand. It's kind of blink-and-you'll-miss-it, but I've always loved that part. All three girls are just so phenomenal here. It really is impressive and they make it look so easy.

Around this time. You can tell Dany's singing is more on the nasal side. She has yet seen a vocal coach.
@don-music
@don-music Жыл бұрын
yes, absolutely, she didn't have an open delivery at all.. but the ability to make her voice do what she wanted, pitch, rhythm, vibrato, and the tone that she was trying to go for... technique lacking aside... all the raw tools were there. It's no wonder that with a great vocal coach she has turned into the shocking powerhouse rock goddess vocalist that she is today!

Hey listen to these kids play! " Oh aren't they cute, and they sounds so good for kids." Then I see your analysis and think, Wow these girls are killing it. They really do know what they are doing, and they are good at it. Now I have been watching tag these ladies for about two years now. They were good then, but they keep getting better. Can't wait to see what new treats they will bring us. I thought their latest Release " More" was a little different, but also extremely good.
@don-music
@don-music Жыл бұрын
yea totally! That's exactly what we all think upon first seeing The Warning, particularly at a younger age. More I actually find to be not nearly as far from their roots as many people are taking it to be... when I reacted to the music (it was a true reaction but I did try to analyze it as well as I could for the first listen to the studio track), it really surprised me how complex the bass part is. I don't actually think that I got that across in my MORE video very well.... Ale is single handedly supplying most of the music in the song MORE, while Pau provides the beat, and Dany sings and provides heavy guitar at times, and lots of little studio overtracked guitar nuance parts that are totally awesome. To me it is more like Queen Of The Murder Scene's heaviness combined with several of The Warning's unfluences that are more alt rock (including, of course, Muse).

In this video Ale is 9. All these covers are prior to the release of "Escape the Mind" and prior to the Liceo concert, Ale is 8 or 9. Ale is 10 in Liceo videos. Also, about this time they are putting together the music for "Escape the Mind", which they would release in April of the following year. Ale would turn 10 in December, a month after this video was released on YT. Another thing, Ale has only been playing bass about 2 years at this point. She could play "Hysteria" a year after starting bass lessons at age 8. This is a short video of Alejandra with her bass and music teacher Pablo Gonzales. There are some clips of her playing his 6 string bass and playing "Hysteria" on the 6 string. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5qXoHmsi7p9h7c Pablo was also Daniela's and Paulina's music teacher. At one point they told him they wanted to try writing their own material. He asked, "are you sure?" They said "yes", so he gave them the assignment of writing a song all by themselves. No helping each other or getting help from anyone and gave them a week. Ale said it was so stressful but also fun. All of them are on the EP. They weren't even going to record the EP. Initially they were just using the song writing process to see if they liked doing their own songs and if could actually write their own material. Well, we see how that turned out and we have to be grateful they did record those songs. All of this is such a tight timeline. From the time Alejandra started bass lessons at age 7 to the release of "Escape the Mind" at age 10 is only 3 years. That means they were writing, arranging, and practicing the music for the EP when she was 9. That is only 2 years after Ale started bass lessons. I summarize the girls this way: music and performing ARE their DNA. They are where they should be and are doing what they should be doing. One more thing. Prior to playing Rock Band they performed classical piano recitals. My two favorite videos are from their practice sessions. Because you get to see them up close. In this video Ale, age 6, is practicing for a recital of Anton Diabelli Sonatina Op 6, No.1, Rondo 3rd Movement. This is one year prior to her starting bass lessons. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmrNnIaIZa6khNU This is a video of Dany and Pau practicing for a recital of Brahms Hungarian Dance No.6 for 4 hands. Dany is 11, Pau 9. They have been on their instruments about 3 years at this time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZSnnH6ufcZjeJY

It does seem to me like the drum pattern here is very complex and Pau never ceases to amaze me, especially with the fills. KZbin kindly put the original from Muse on the right hand column of picks so I decided to hear it, possibly for the first time as I don't recall ever hearing it when it came out in 2009. Sometimes you need to compare a cover to the original to see how well the cover was done, and holy crap they nailed it. It didn't happen for the 4 shows where they opened for Muse in Mexico, but maybe during these next 5 shows we'll see some sort of interaction between the two bands. Maybe Dom can sit in on Narcissista or at least on the last show have TW come up on stage for a final bow like Halestorm did for them. IMHO, the holy grail would be for Ale to sit in on Hysteria.

It's interesting to see that they did a lot more technical playing in their early covers than they typically do now. That certainly does not appear to be lack of confidence in their technique; I'm sure it's a matter of musical choices.

yes... I think it is fascinating to review these younger performances to see how they proved themselves technically very early on, and since then have focused on songwriting for the sake of the music, not for the sake of complexity just for complexity's sake. It's refreshing, really!
