On Christmas, the Warriors used a brilliant cutting strategy built around Steph Curry's off-ball movement to defeat the Suns. This video is a detailed film breakdown of Curry, Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr's tactics to outlast Chris Paul, Devin Booker and the Suns.

@@sukumarsahoo6075 it’s because no one besides the really good teams move without the ball, and stars are so enamored with the lebron style of do it all yourself, or the iso 2000s style, that moving without the ball has become a lost art. I just don’t get how no one has figured out that being able to get yourself open without the ball can lead to easier buckets, better ways to break down the offense, better efficiency, better floor spacing if everyone moves too, and your stamina and conditioning would be through the roof. That’s how I learned to play the game as a small guard coming up. A lot of kids aren’t taught to move anymore after college. It’s all one on one, or pick and roll. It seems the suns and warriors are the only ones willing to try anything innovative right now while everyone else wants to play copy cat ball.

Curry is the greatest off-ball player of all time. The entire offense is just him either moving off-ball to get a good look from three, or cutting to the basket unexpectedly. And he draws like 2-3 defenders each time he does. Not a system player man, he is the damn system.

This just solidifies Draymond as a 1st ballot HOFer. He is the archetype of a player that thrives in the current edition of the NBA and he's the reason why all 29 other teams in the NBA are looking for someone that can play a role that only he can fill. He is the "point guard" of the offense and the true defensive anchor on the defense, constantly talking and communicating with teammates, on and off the floor. He is, as Jay-Z puts it, a one of one.

But I think it's a disservice to the individual to critique him based on a hypothetical. He's a very high IQ player, his playmaking ability, leadership, and defence could translate to any team. He's limited offensively but scoring isn't the only way to affect a game. Too much of an emphasis is placed on what shows up on the box score and not enough on what doesn't - Draymond is a hall of famer because of everything he does that doesn't show up on the box score that a well oiled team needs to win and stay on top.

As a longtime Warriors fan and having watched pretty much every game of Draymond's career, it is absolutely bonkers what the man does in regards to utilizing "space" whilst playing defense. His intuition is as elite as it comes but the cherry on top is that he acts correctly on his intuition 9 times out of 10. It is an absolute crime in my mind that he only has one DPOY award in his cabinet (bias aside lol). For those of us who can appreciate it, please, focus in on Draymond whenever you can on the defensive end. There are SO many plays that are not on the stat sheet that go unnoticed unless you are "looking" for it.

Got to go to this game. Had a lot of fun. A lot of lazy close outs from the suns too. Gave up some 3s that were preventable, and they lost curry a few too many times. Good screening from the warriors, and curry never stops moving. He’s like a little Tasmanian devil. Lol. Book didn’t have a good game either, and we needed his production in the fourth. We made that little comeback without him really doing much in the 4th. The warriors really didn’t have an answer for ayton but he was really the only option. Cp got his buckets in spurts but not consistently because of how hard they hedged every pnr so cp couldn’t get to that elbow. We kept turning the ball over as well. Then Jae couldn’t hit an open look in the late minutes and Otto chamberlain channels his inner klay Thompson. Gg warriors. Hope we see this matchup in the playoffs. Kerr became an underrated coach after that 2019-2020 season. So much hate for a team that was nowhere near championship contention. If only he knew how to name his kid

Love your stuff, Ben. Given your excellent historical analysis of player peaks, I was wondering if you had any plans to contrast defensive coverages from different eras. A common assumption is that defense was largely just based on 1v1 abilities, and I was curious if that notion held up.

That's fascinating about opponents not dropping off of GSW's non-shooters due to Curry burning them off the screen switches, I honestly never realized that before. Thanks for the awesome insights!

These adjustments will be so much more intriguing in a best of seven series. I think Kerr and his staff have been great at in-series adjustments and finding solutions to whatever the other team tries to throw at Curry, we'll see how the Suns staff does Also, chris paul's dirty plays and flopping, are the reason he never won a championship, he has bad basketball karma

I'll admit that I haven't watched Paul as closely throughout his career as I have since he joined the Suns, but after watching him intently in over a hundred games, I don't see a dirty player. He's crafty, he'll take advantage wherever he can, but to me that just speaks to how much smarter he is than most players in the league. Do you honestly think other players don't succeed with the same tactics because of some strict code of ethics? Don't be naive. It's because they can't. They're not smart enough, they're not skilled enough, they don't know when to strike, and they don't know how to get inside the heads of their opponents. (Or under their skin.) And for anyone who tries to discredit the highly-skilled and incredibly talented player he is by pointing to just this one tool in his kit... You look foolish.

good call on "the old step on the defenders foot trick" if scouting reports rate "sneaky" along with other skills, Chris Paul's score must be at least double the next closest rating. I've been a Dubs fan for half a century now, after growing up a Knicks fan then moving to SF Bay Area in '68, but I confess it is hard to root against Phoenix. Great young talent, brilliant creative tough team leaders in Paul and Booker, a couple of vet bigs I've always enjoyed in Crowder + McGee. They play hard, smart, together and with classy respect for opponents. If the Christmas game was a Conference Finals preview, by no means a foregone conclusion despite the current standings, it will be great fun watching the game to game and quarter to quarter adjustments of these 2 deep, smart, talented teams. Really glad to see Coach Williams get a team like this to work with after what happened in New Orleans when he was there.
