One of the members of the gray ranks remembers that when they retreated from the old town the civilians begged them to stay. This was one of the most tragic things about the uprising. People who didn’t exit the city in time were trapped and their only defense was the resistance. Every retreat meant that thousands civilians and wounded were left to die by the heads of the German forces. That is why this is one of the most bloody battle of the 20 century. @@CHRF-55457 No that's just false. At first yes but America never directly intervened in any meaningful capacity (save for a few airstrikes and some supplies I believe) to protect the French Colony of Feench Indochina. America intervened to stop the communists from overruing the south Vietnamese who were independent from France. American intervention was extremely limited in the 1956 First Indochina war. They had no intentions of returning it to French rule the strategic objective of the Second Indochina war was simply to preserve the status quo and prevent the fall of South Vietnam to the North which is where they failed and ultimately lost

The "polish nation" wasn't destroyed. This was concentrated in Warsaw and other big cities. Though millions died, the poles still lived on, keeping their customs and their language. I honestly have tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for this video. I am a young Pole, living in Warsaw, and it means a lot to me. Despite Normandy, the West would probably prefer to ignore some events of II WW. Here, we still remember all of. This story should never be forgotten and I believe it won't be - kiedy my żyjemy. They did so much for us, what else could we do for them? Poland has a long history of uprisings against German and Russian oppressors dating back to the XVIII century. Warsaw Uprising is perhaps the most tragic. The audacity, the impudence, the bravery of boys running with pistols and rocks against well-trained Nazi troops is unthinkable. To this day, Warsaw Uprising is subject of heavy debate in Poland. Some portray it as a foolish and unnecessary fight that resulted mostly in deaths of Polish civilians. Looking at strict numbers and war potential - it's hard to argue with that. The loss has also weakened the Polish position during post-war conferences. Isn't it the irony of the fate that Bór-Komorowski dreamed about securing Poland from Stalin but have only nailed the coffin for Jałta? Another tragic story is Wołyń. Just before the Uprising, Polish civilians in the East of the country were brutally murdered by UPA - Ukrainian paramilitary group fighting for the freedom of their country. Village by village, it was pure extermination of anyone who was Catholic or spoke the wrong language. 50,000 of Poles have died there during 1943-45. Just a few weeks ago, a controversial book about these events was published. The author argues that Polish commanders could help people of Wołyń but choose to focus on upcoming Warsaw Uprising. Was it a mistake to sacrifice lives at Wołyń for uncertain hope for Warsaw? God, is it even possible to answer such a question? For any adult, who would like to know more about dillemas and sacrifices of young Poles during the Uprising, I would recommend the movie Warsaw '44. It is not documentary but it perfectly captures the tragedy of history. If you have a chance of visiting Warsaw, Warsaw Uprising Museum is a must-see. Kiedy my żyjemy!
@Askhat084 жыл бұрын
Poland always was a biggest enemy of itself. Their attitude, superiority complex, idiotic decisions, habit of pissing off all their neighbours made them a lot of enemies throughout the centuries. I'm not defending anyone, but there is a reason for the Wolyn massacre and Ukrainian hatred towards Poles. And the reason is Poles treated them worse than dogs for centuries. Sometimes karma has to be repayed. When Poland was under Prussia,/Austrian/Russian control, the entire region became much calmer, there were no wars until WW1 if you count off Polish (again) rebellions.

Thanks to you, I have a piece of knowledge that I can show my fellow colleagues in Madrid about the atrocities made to my capital. I would like to thank your effort and time providing not only the facts, but also some numbers of the Warsaw Uprising. The whole country remembers this as one of the cruelest, but also the bravest episodes of our history. To this day, the whole city of Warsaw stops for a minute, while sirens echo across the nation and firecrackers are lit in the major crossroads in Warsaw. Then, one of the most beautiful moments that I, living abroad, always try to watch on live streaming: the President, the Prime Minister and many other politicians, bishops, priests, army members and civilians sing together the Polish National Anthem in the Powązki Cemetery. And so the Anthem begins: Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła, kiedy my żyjemy. Co nam obca przemoc wzięła, szablą odbierzemy. Which roughly translates to: Poland has not yet perished, So long as we still live. What the foreign force has taken from us, We shall retrieve with sabre. Thank you once again for this insightful piece.

This is one of the very few time I say that a nation exists that is more patriotic than the U.S.A. Well played, Poland. May your country live on for 1,000 years.

I’ve been fascinated by Poland for the last few years. The commonwealth era was a fascinating time, a interesting stab at democracy before the “great experiment” and a multicultural empire much stabler than the Austrians. Post Great War they beat back the red army, even beating the Soviet Union. After the curtain fell, they’re rebuilding the city, bringing back historic sites. The fact that they have such a strong identity after everything they’ve been through is really impressive.

@@phillip5043 Even just sending air support could have drastically altered the fate of the city. Doing so wouldn't have required them to cross the river on the ground.

I've been suggesting this for ages! If Extra History sees this, a good book about this (and more!) is the book Irish Rebelions 1798-1921 by Helen Litton

Should do Budapest 1956 next. Talk about the Hungarian resistance to the Communists.

I, being Polish, have been taught Polish history, and this is only one of the times Poland has been given the middle finger by conflict, but still persevered. I am truly proud of my countries accomplishments and achievements, and I am honoured to be a part of it.
