I’m guessing the “entity” that is watching them is the audience as some sort of meta commentary? “You can’t see them.” The applauds. The one way relationship that would exist between the “characters” in the art (movies, TV shows, books, etc) we consume being strung along by their creators (the writers) and then watched by us (the audience).

The book is terrible. The twist is hinted at and given away so many times. The power goes out because...it just does. Really, that's the explanation. That there is no explanation. And its not supernatural or aliens. It's literally a house built over a bunker by a crazy person. And the dialog in the book...holy crap it's horrendous. How did this even become a movie?
