From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1976. Directed by Graham Chase. Every year flood-waters ravage Australian cities and villages, and every year houses are ruined, lives lost. Most people want to know how to read the warnings and prepare for floods, to avoid danger and damage; others apparently don’t, as this film dramatically reveals. Modern technology helps us predict when and where flooding can be expected. State Emergency Services and similar organisations assist in the evacuation of people from danger areas.

@Jamie What gets me angry is when tv reporters and hosts use nicknames on air. "Our reporter live on scene, Timbo..." Or Robbo, Hawko, Dazza, etc. It doesn't even matter male or female. Both genders use these yobbo terms at both male and female colleagues. It makes a mockery of the news shows. How are we supposed to take these people seriously when they are acting and speaking as though they are down at the pub?

A very apt comment at the 14.30 mark by the Professor "flooding will occur on the floodplain. 45 years later we are still building on the floodplain.

Nobody wants to remember the Glen Waverley flood of New Year's Day 1992. That was 29 years ago when the old creek long buried as a drainpipe turned back into a creek. Now most of the old houses affected by the flood have been demolished & even more new town houses built on concrete slabs at ground level on the flood plain. One day there will be another great flood in Glen Waverley, the developers who built on the flood plain will be long gone and nobody will take responsibility.

The SES changed its face again in the 1974 Australia Day floods in Brisbane. The civilian population of a suburb called Inala, mobilised its own boats and vehicles to coordinate with the Civil Defence and Emergency services to best assist those affected in the local area, and beyond. The SES was more or less formed from there to become an organised and coordinated force in the case of emergency situations, to replace the fragmented and often over lapping services previously offered. Of course, this took some time to organise, and wasn't really begun until later in the decade.

I much prefer it when the Government doesn't force people to do things; @5:33 this was perfect - they warned them but didn't force them. Softly softly. Then, natural selection takes over.
