In this video, I discuss the impact of socioeconomic status on the likelihood of becoming a professor in STEM fields, as highlighted by a recent study published in Nature Human Behaviour. The study found that professors are 25 times more likely to have a parent with a Ph.D. than the general public and that academics are also twice as likely to have a parent with a Ph.D. than other people with Ph.Ds. I examine possible reasons for this trend, including insider information, nepotism, and economic advantages. The study also shows that prestigious universities tend to have higher percentages of faculty with Ph.D. parents, and it explores the gender and racial implications of this trend and the limitations of the study.
