A key point I think is worth taking into consideration: in the two example videos you showed (and the other examples I've seen on Instagram) they are starting with very simple clothing shapes and colors. Usually black or grey in basic staples, and then adding accessories, interesting shoes, or a pop of color to add their own personality to the look. You are already making authentic-to-you "style" choices in the bright colors and lovely floral patterns that you seem to be naturally drawn to! I say this as someone who also wears a lot of bright red and floral without many accessories - and who often looks at your clothes and thinks "I totally would have picked that up too!" Your beginning garments already have a level of style before you add anything. I loved the orange monochrome look! Orange is my favorite color, and it's not one you often see day-to-day.

I agree! When you wear bright colours or patterns it's safer to keep it simple.
@clairemacphee427310 ай бұрын
yes i agree, i think the point of "styling" is to get the most out of your basics and re-wear the same pieces styled in different ways! very budget friendly. however if your closet is mostly more interesting/thrifted/vintage pieces and you don't have many basics, you don't need to do much styling to look unique. both approaches are perfectly fine ideas and it really depends on your own personal style

Honestly think people are just making up the difference between "wearing" and "styling" (it's just people showing two different styles and pretending one of them is somehow a different activity), but this was still fun to watch and you got some cute looks out of it
@chrissy967310 ай бұрын
I think the difference is intention which is hard to tell when you're just looking at someone. Did you pick those shoes because you wanted a certain look or because you always wear those shoes? It's those types of decisions (or lack of decision) which makes the difference I think.

I’m no fashion expert by any means, but I’d try styling the Yellow Sun Dress with the purple/lilac Cardigan instead of the Pink accessories and the white shirt. I think those two colours could work so well together!

I was coming to say that! And also gold earrings and a matching necklace, keep the red bag and belt but switch the boots for the sneakers. You could also swap the cardigan for that brown jacket or even a brown blazer if you have one. This was such a fun video Hannah!

This might be a crazy idea, but I think the first yellow dress would be SO cute as a separate top and skirt. You get rid of that "awkward" middle section that you think is falling in a weird place, and then you can mix it with other parts of your wardrobe. Just a thought!

Aaaah what a fun video!! I was hoping for a monochrome outfit and the orange did not disappoint 🧡 I actually learned a lot about styling/layering from your 10x10 challenge years ago! And Kathleen Illustrated also has lots of original ideas I think. One thing I learned about dresses is that they're actually a lot more versatile than you might think, you can choose to just show them as a top or a skirt, you could even wear another dress on top, or if they're buttoned like yours, you can wear them unbuttoned as an outer layer!

My only issue with these types of "wear vs. style" videos is when the "style" part includes a coat/jacket and a purse. Because these are practical things that you will wear anyway if you need them, or you won't (you can wear a bag without needing it, but if it's super warm you won't wear a jacket). So if the "wear" does not have a bag or jacket, but it's a situation where you would need them anyway, it seems like if you were slouching in a "before" picture of weight loss, you know? You are exaggerating the before, so the after seems to have a bigger difference than it actually does. That said, I like the idea of thinking about different ways of using the things you use on a regular basis, and I thought your outfits (particularly the black skirt one) were amazing!
@maggiebookworm10 ай бұрын
Right? To me some of the wear vs. styling videos just end up looking over-done instead of put-together, but I love Hannah's spin on it because it felt so authentic to her.
@alissa638010 ай бұрын
Hannah, the way my jaw DROPPED when I saw the orange and the black skirt!! Definitely the winners for me as well, though I think the orange would feel much less cartoony without the scrunchie - I'd leave your hair down for that one, or perhaps pulled back with the 90s clip? And re: weather conditions for black skirt, I feel like it'd be a very versatile spring outfit if you wore some thin tights with it. Personally I find boots with bare legs both impractical and a bit weird-looking, but with tights you're good for all kinds of weather from brisk and chilly to pretty warm, just take the jacket off and cool off in the tank top (or a black t-shit if you've got one), or if you're a bit chilly, throw on a fun scarf for some extra protection! But yeah, definitely agree that this outfit looked simultaneously really put together and also really you, which is the best combination. Re: the shorts outfit, the sandals are the kind of light brown that also appears in the sunflowers, so it does actually match, don't worry! I do agree that a red accent would be nice tho, but it doesn't always need to be nail polish - if you've got a red bit of fabric or even wrapping string, you could tie fun little bows to the sandals themselves, or even weave the material between the different sections. (That way it's easily removable, but if you often find the sandals lacking, you could even hot glue some rhinestones to them for a permanent look, maybe a pattern in two or three colours so that they actively match most of your outfits.) (Fun tip: you know those loops sewn to the shoulders of store-bought tops so they don't fall off the hanger and that you cut off as soon as you start wearing it because they get in the way? Well, they're great for occasions like this, where you want a little something extra but not enough to go buy something new, and they're a really good color match most of the time as well! Put them in your hair, tie them to your earrings, make a bow and pin them to your top as a brooch... They're usually very narrow, so it might look floppy at first, but with some fiddling it can be a great subtle addition to an outfit; just do something with the ends first if they're gonna be visible.) Edit: Oh, and re: the yellow dress, I actually thought the outfit was 70% of the way there already! The white loose button down looks great tied up like that - very cazh but stylish, summery but put together. The pink doesn't show up on camera very well so I don't know how it looked in person, but in the video it seemed really pale and unobtrusive, and probably outshined by the red? So personally I would do red sandals, red bag, ditch the belt (too much going on in that section) but add red to the ears, something small but bold. (No longer than an inch or even less, as much as i love those glorious red-orange-yellow ball earrings). Or if not earrings, then maybe a red scrunchy or even that red hairband - just something to spread the red more evenly over the body. I would also do a shorter, more subtle necklace, and exchange the braids for a high pony (in which case the dangly earrings *could* be an option) or just leave the hair down; the braids add a little 'cowgirl' element that I'm not sure you were going for. (And they also visually drag your face/head downwards, as if they're pointing to the white shirt, making that the real focus of the outfit.) (Personally i find that if there is something dragging the attention downwards - dangly earrings, a bold necklace, long hair, etc. - then there must also be something to drag the attention upwards: a bold headband or hair clips, a kind of hairstyle like space buns or a high pony, dramatic eye makeup, etc.. That way the forces cancel each other out and the focus remains on your face, but in a put-together way.) Loved this video, as usual! Not sure what kind of fashion content I'd specifically want - maybe being styled by a friend? One video for working with just what you have in your wardrobe, and maybe one from other kinds of clothes, like a thrift shop? The items probably wouldn't be your exact style so you wouldn't be tempted to buy them, but it'd be really interesting to see what others would put you in if they could put you in anything.

I have a really hard time remembering what goes well together. I don't have the 'vision' and so when I get an outfit that is good, I take a picture and put it in an album so when I'm trying to figure out what to wear I can look at that. Sometimes just having 'things' makes it hard to visualize all together on my body. I'm sure for Hannah, having these sorts of videos to look back on helps the same way. All these outfits were awesome! I don't think I could have come up with as nice 'styling' as you!

Hannah, this was so fun to watch. I LOVE a monochrome outfit. It's one of my go-to style formulas. Trust me, you don't even have to have the same colour, just in the same colour family and it will totally work. That orange outfit was FAB! I would have also loved to see the way you "normally" style your clothes (instead of just a description) vs. the new "styled" outfits. You could do one of these videos every season.

Regarding the monochromatic looks, I think it mostly works, with the different shades of the same colour, but not always. I have a purplish blue skirt and a greenish blue cardigan, and I don’t think that they go well together. But the orange outfit is so cool. If you wanted some additional blue to match the earrings then you could put on a blue belt, but monochromatic is so cool, also!

Love this! I always love your style, all these are so cute and I hope you have the confidence to wear the all orange outfit it’s so cute! I think for the first yellow dress as you said you’re not quite sure with what you put together, if you had the white shirt OR the red belt/necklace it would have worked better as they’re competing with each other a bit and making the top area quite busy. Also the shoes with the black soles are making the outfit unbalanced as everything else is so light so bringing in some black higher up or changing it to a lighter shoe would make it look more balanced, hope that’s helpful!

Haven't even made my way fully through the video BUT! As soon as I saw that skirt I was inspired! A styling idea that idk if you've done before, because it is more cool-colour themed and so much of your wardrobe seems to be warm and sunshiney: the lilac cropped jumper with said floral brocade? velvet? skirt (love it love it), black or charcoal tights, the white ankle boots you mentioned?, white denim jacket. I looooove the combo of that pale lilac with darker more winey colours. The contrast of the slouchy soft lilac knit fabric against the very structured fitted short floral silhouette, with darker plain tights to add a grounding point, and then the flash of white boots and white jacket to tie the darker elements back to the lighter lilac. Or you could wear it without tights and the white sneaks as well? Maybe add a red waist belt and/or bag even???? Admittedly I am biased because that is how I would wear those things, perhaps it isn't necessarily a you outfit? But it could be fun! From one Hannah to another, some food for thought :)
@samvandot10 ай бұрын
For the yellow dress, maybe try a gradient! It's kinda like monochrome in vibes: I'm thinking yellow dress, orange bag, brown jacket (that's a gradient increasing in colour intensity & darkness), and then match the brown heels with the jacket for the wedding, or the white sneakers to dress it down (then your gradient goes all the way down to 0 saturation). Pop in some orange earrings and you're good to go! I do black-grey-white a lot (maybe with a colourful accessory), or purple-blue-green (purple and green both have blue in them). Just have a look at the colour circle on google images and pick a series of colours that are adjacent to each other :)

Both encourage creativity with ‘styling’, including changing proportions and silhouettes as well as color and pattern pairings. I view ‘styling’ as making clothes be more me, and be more versatile. At videos start, so I hope you end up having fun!

Wear the sunflower shorts with navy tights underneath and the stripy jumper you are wearing in the video ( the brown centre of the sunflowers matches the brown stripe in the jumper and the blue of the shorts is between the two blue shades on the jumper). For the orange dress, you can get thin tops to wear under it ( Uniqlo Heat tech ones are great, and I they come ( or used to come) in a whole load of cool colours. Styling for me is do the colours of each item of clothing I am wearing go together. When I buy an item, I think of three ways I could wear it/which pieces it would go with. I own a lot of scarves as accessories as I can’t wear jewellery for work! I have be3n doing monochromatic looks for years! I used to want everything to match exactly, but now I just go by colour family/tone/shade.
