Well Folks,
Here I have another wild camp to offer with some wind and rain involved. Camped up a hill with incredible views over Loch Turret and the surrounding mountains and also a good distant view of Creiff.
Exciting camp with calm weather to begin with but progressively getting worse throughout the night. A good test for the new tent with its first camp in the wind.

You made a good memory and lived to tell the tale! Very wise to just call it a day and go back. Stuff happens and we can only do so much planning. There is always a risk something unexpected will come up. But you had some dry clothes and a car to camp in and regroup. Good video!

Great to see Loch Turret there Gaz. I haven't been there in years. Last time I was there was when I was in the TA, and we spent the day abseiling of the dam! I know what you mean about those Firepot meals. I bought a few as they were reduced in Cotswolds. I think I've had one decent one out of the lot. With Wayfayrers you can't go wrong for taste,but Firepot are too hit and miss for me. I hope the weather improves for you for your next camps,that looked like a real endurance test for you - and the tent!

Thanks James! Think it was worth trying the new meals but unfortunately the taste is just not for me. I have three of them left so might just use them the next few camps to get rid of them. Brilliant vid Gaz, nice location. sorry to hear about your unplanned dip in the river, def go for it a 3rd time though, it'll feel good to complete the challenge. The tent looks so sturdy in the wind and whilst it might be a bit of a bother to put up/take down, it really is an awesome tent for the bad weather as you have so much space in the vestibule.

Thanks Susz, and yeah there will defo be a 3rd attempt at this Mountain. Not a fan of the woodland walk for it so might plan a different route for the next time. The tent is okay to pitch but as I found out on rocky ground it was a little bit difficult to get it up. Happy it held up well in the wind and the pegs stayed in the ground too. The Vestibule has already allowed a good night up Beinn Ghlas with Monty and Nick. The extra space is extremely helpful. Thanks for watching Susz, take care. ATB

Truthfully my dog's get fed a hundred times better than anyone who has to eat one of them meals. On another note I've trekked up where you camped on my way up Ben Chonzie in the snow & walked round onto a hard frozen Auchnafree Hill & back down to the carpark.. lovely place,long drive for me though from down here in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Hey Gaz. Totally get what you mean about dried food. £££££££ and most of it is rubbish. The Adventure food "Pasta Bolognese is an exception (Brilliant) . The summit to eat Chicken Fried Rice deserves a special place in Hell. My go to is pot noodle (light but bulky) and pork pies. If you are doing a big route it works. Coffee 3 in 1 and cup a soup get warnth into you too. Was up Beinn Oss last weekend on a summit camp. Thanks for your comment Rich, I think the Soulo would’ve been the better option considering the ground for the pegs. I suppose with all that wind, you dont suffer condensation inside the tent Gaz, was that the case? Also do the ticks go away for winter or do you still need to be mindful and check yourself? You should probably cook your own meals, but keep it simple lol Have fun Peter and lucky the Boxer dog
@GazTheExplorer
@GazTheExplorer 7 ай бұрын
Sometimes the wind can prevent condensation forming. I’ve had it in the past where condensation forms and if the wind picks up then the wind will dry the tent out for the morning. As for the ticks, I had to pull three off my arm after the forest camp which was posted last week. Would always recommend doing a tick check. Even in the winter months the ticks are out and about as I found out. Less likely to come across them on the hills I guess with all the snow and frost on the ground. I’ll be sticking to Wayfayrer meals and cooking my own meals if I have space for everything in the backpack. At this time of the year on the hills I have the hassle of taking winter gear like an ice axe too. Thanks Peter and Lucky, Nice to hear from you ATB Gaz

To realise what a pretty area Loch Turret is just use Google maps and view some of the carpark photos. Wonderful reason to go back - and those late November forecastes. Please I've often noticed that dark blue down jacket you wear. Is it the Rab electron pro jacket or other? I am currently in the process of buying a new winter down hooded jacket and my first purchase with a 520g total weight has proven inadequate for tent life on a winter 0C and below hill camp. Thx for posting. JMO.

Thanks JMO👍 The jacket is the Rab Electron. Use it all year round and that includes long distance hikes (about 40-50km) and it’s served me very well. 3 years old and it shows no signs of needing replaced. @GazTheExplorer Appreciated. Smile. Certainly its looking good for 3yrs. But if I understand your usage correctly you take it off and put on the goretex hardshell when it's time to walk with a full 14kg backpack?
