The Weber Summit Charcoal Grill (also known as the Weber Summit Charcoal Grilling Station) is finally on the market after months of waiting. Weber says it's a combination of the Weber Kettle, the Weber Performer, and the Weber Smokey Mountain (or “WSM” as it is commonly called) all in one. I don't think so. I think it’s a kamado style grill.
I’ve owned a lot of kamados including the Komodo Kamado, several Big Green Eggs, Kamado Joe (both the Kamado Joe Big Joe and the Kamado Joe Classic) as well as metal kamados like Akorn Kamado by Chargriller and the Bubba Keg (previously known as Big Steel Keg and now known as the Broil King Keg). They are all great products, by the way, and if you are thinking about getting one, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. However, they all have different strengths and weaknesses.
Since making this video, I have actually fired up the Weber Summit Charcoal grill and done a test run. I was expecting the Summit to operate like the metal kamados I have owned before but it didn’t. The Keg and the Akorn are much more efficient but the flip side of that is maintaining temps is not as simple.
However, the Summit felt a lot more like the Big Green Egg XL and Kamado Joe Big Joe. It ran a little hot like all grills do when they are brand new because the vents are not seasoned up, but once the grill settle in, it stayed pretty much where I put it. Also, the heat coming off the grill when you touched it felt more like a ceramic grill than a metal one (meaning, it felt hotter...metal kamados have insulation like an indoor oven.)
Now that was just one test run and there was no wind that day, so we will have to see how it does in future cooks, but it was encouraging to see for the first cook.
Links to Amazon
If you are interested in purchasing any of the products mentioned in this video (and you feel like being awesome) please use these links and Amazon will send me a small referral fee. I’m hoping it’s a monkey…but it’s probably just regular money. But have you ever noticed how close the spelling is between “money” and “monkey”? …just drop in a ‘k’ and money becomes a monkey. However, whether it’s a monkey or normal money, the price of your item is the same as it would be if you arrived at Amazon linklessly. (Is that even a word?)
And another thing, you actually do not even need to buy any of the specific products I’ve linked to. You could actually buy ANYTHING…like socks or something weird. They will still send me a referral fee (or monkey) since you used one of these links to get there. Now just to be clear, it’s not a lot of money… unless you buy REALLY nice socks. (Which you should. Your feet deserve it.) They take you pretty much everywhere you want to go. Except for when you are in your car, of course. You know what you should buy after clicking these links?!? A CAR!?!? Now that would REALLY help my channel.
By the way, I used to hate it when KZbinrs say “help my channel” because I was pretty sure what they really meant was “Cha-Ching, baby!” But the truth is it’s not that much money. But video equipment is expensive and every little bit helps. So get out there and BUY THAT CAR!…if they even sell cars. If not, buy those fancy socks. Your feet with thank you…and so do I!
If you’ve actually read this far, let me know in the comments because I’m pretty sure most people’s eyes glaze over after they saw the “Links to Amazon” phrase.
OK, so here are the links
Weber Kettle amzn.to/1TLO14g
Weber Smokey Mountain amzn.to/1QTvA9h
Weber Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill amzn.to/1WcLOmo
Char-Griller Akorn (you may be able to get this cheaper at Lowes) amzn.to/1WcLRyN

The Summit Grill does not appear to be on Amazon yet.

It is indeed a Kamado ( though my sometime rich neighbor calls it an "Egg"; a Kamado one can easily move in and out of the garage. A cooker that cooked excellent today, xmas day 2020, even though it was in the 30s with snow here, and with the addition of a FireBox 2 Drive I got a couple days ago, I cooked my huge ribeye roast, and didn't have to freeze my ass off to do so. Thanks, once again, Justin, for promoting this all in one cooker/grill/smoker with a work table, and a rack to keep the hot bits, and places to hang not only utensils, but the grates as well. The few people who come down my street love it and are a wee jealous. All I know, it cooks AWESOME!

Very funny!! And very logical. I sell this grill at my hardware store and the price is very difficult to get over for customers. Haven't sold one since they've been released.
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
I can understand that. It's pricy. To be honest, I'd like to see them knock about $500 off the price. Having said that, I'd buy it again in a second now that I have it and can see what it can do. I just think that nobody is going to take the chance on it unless they bring the price down. Thanks for the comment, Adam. I appreciate it.
@mrteentitan
@mrteentitan 8 жыл бұрын
+Baby Back Maniac I agree on the price suggestion. How would you compare the moisture content of the food versus a ceramic kamado type?
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
It's hard to answer that without having two identical briskets side by side under the exact same conditions...having said that, the brisket video I uploaded last week was one of the best I've ever done. I don't think one has a clear advantage over the other. Porcelain coated vs ceramic is kind of the same. And the efficiency is in the same ball park which means air flow is pretty similar. The main thing I like better about the Big Green Egg is the fact that it's a Big Green Egg (branding, community, accessories, etc.) The main thing I like better about the Weber is the conveniences. Easy ash clean out, storage (for charcoal, heat deflector, and other stuff in the storage basket and on the bottom rack), built in lighter and side table. If you think about it, that's all stuff that everybody has around there grill, but with the Summit you get it one small footprint which is nice. There are no wrong choices here.

Aaaaaand... THAT folks is why I went with a 24' Kamado ceramic grill for $600. Another $1400 buys almost another Big Kamado Joe at the same place. Definitely a Joe Classic or another mini Kamado egg travel size for camping. Another $1400 can buy a lot of BBQ hardware. Don't need no stink'n cart. I have an island on my patio and a table nearby so setting stuff on is covered. Great review 👍

New Sub, Great video! I have a Weber Summit 640 that's 15 years old and still looks and runs great. I love Weber, and I had been looking at a performer to add to the stable. After seeing this launch I am considering one over the performer. I agree the price is high, but they last and just work, so they justify themselves. I was hoping it would have been a pellet grill, as that would have been something new for Weber, but a Kamado style is something I have never had or used, and I have looked at the BGE and others including the Komodo brand or as I call them "Pieces of Art"... :) with curiosity.

Your videos are very informative and fun to watch. Looks like your whole family is involved too! Do you think a Weber 26 inch kettle (with some accessories) could compare to this beast for most smokes? For as impressive as it looks and performs in your videos, I can't justify paying that price.
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
Hi George, I totally understand. I love the Summit more than I thought I would, but the 26.75 is a MUCH better value for the money...and it's bigger too. The Summit is a little more versatile and has more conveniences, but the 26.75 is the best bang for the buck in the whole Weber lineup. You can cook anything in it and I'm certain you'll be happy with it. By the way, in the next couple videos I'm going to do a video with both the Summit and the 26.75...at least that is my current plan. I think you'll enjoy it.

Can you do a high temperature “clean burn” on this Kamado like the ceramic Kamados!?! Have you tried it?
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it works great. By the way, most ceramic companies don't recommend that anymore but they don't tell you that till after you buy it. It causes microfractures and is hard on the firebox/thermometers and they usually give you "no getting around the laws of physics" line. With that said, this one handles it as well as any other kamado I've owned.

@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 2 жыл бұрын
@@Two_Bit_Smoke Unless something has changed, the SNS materials (metal/ceramic) used are literally the best you can get in this class of cooker. Burn off's still creates wear and tear on gaskets/therms but basically anything any other ceramic kamado can take, the SnS should be able to endure. With that said, I would double check with them before you make any purchase. Their customer service is really good and they are nice people. Tell them I said hi. lol

Thanks for the response, but i guess my question was based on situationally, when to use which grill. For instance, Is the Kamado better for smoking things and the weber more suited for cooking things at higher temps? Just curious and wanted your incite being that you have both.
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, sorry. I misunderstood. The Weber and Kamado are both the same type of cooker. The fire is further from the main grate on the Komodo Kamado and the Komodo Kamado is way more efficient and premium build quality. The Weber has more convenient features and a little bit better ergonomics. So to answer your question, when cooking like a steak or burger where I want to sear the outside and possible move to the indirect side to finish, I prefer the Weber. (The kamado has a searing grate and split fire basket for this purpose but I like the Weber better because the KK searing grate is smaller...especially when split in half. The komodo is definitely better for pizza due to the way the top vent is towards the back forcing the heat to roll over the top of the pizza more evenly. Other than that, they cook about the same.

An OK review. I agree the way they marketed it was off. That, the price and the extra grate were the only things you nailed spot on. Kamado's don't need a water bowl. I don't know about the summit, but I've never had to add a water bowl in my egg and I've yet to have any dry BBQ. You also don't need to access the fuel because they run much more efficiently than any of the other grills/smokers. It has more pro's than con's IMO. There's things you can do with a Kamado that you can't with the comparison Weber's an vice versa. If I didn't already have a BGE or if something happens to it, I'd probable pull the trigger on one.
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeeves, Thanks for your comment. I feel like there is a lot of misunderstanding about this video. Of course it doesn't NEED a water bowl or an access door. I never said it needed water bowl or an access door...I just said it did not have them. The whole point of that sequence was to make the point that it's a kamado and not a WSM. Let me back up. The point of this video as outlined in the title was to show that the Summit is more like a kamado than the previous weber products (which is a fact that wasn't entirely clear at the time I created this) That's it! That's all it was supposed to be about...and I stuck to that theme the entire video. It seems like people were expecting something else out of this video and are disliking it based on an expectation to see something that wasn't the topic of this video. Do you mind telling me how you ran across this video? Maybe that will help explain it. Thanks!

Baby Back Maniac Gottcha. Point taken. I believe I gave you a thumbs up. I don't thumbs down anything unless I feel the person is just trying to be douche. How I got here? I was on the BBQ brethren forum and someone was considering a kamado style cooker. He wanted a comparison between the Summit and a ceramic. Someone posted your vid. I just finished watching the longevity test. 50+ hours. That's pretty impressive. I know it wasn't a scientific test, but I wonder how long it would have lasted if you hadn't kept opening it and stirring the charcoal? Or did you do that because the temp was dropping?
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 8 жыл бұрын
I see. Thanks for explaining that (and for the thumbs up). If you want to see a lot more more about Summit itself, check out the Brisket cook I just posted last week. The first 6 minutes are pretty much all about the Summit. BGE vs Summit. See that's the video I should actually do since I've had both. I could do it pretty even-handedly too though it would probably still end up upsetting everyone. lol. (Spoiler alert: There isn't a clear winner. They are both awesome in different ways so go with your gut. I certainly wouldn't sell a BGE to get one (or vice versa) unless you need it to be portable or are just wanting to try something new.) Yes, after about 14 hours the temps started dropping. Initially I just stirred the coals through the hinged openings and that worked fine. I also could have adjusted the vents on the guru and the lid. However, after the first 24 hours, I realized it would also make more compelling video to take the lid off and let people get a sense of the consumption rate. (At least that was the goal...It was pretty dark in some of those shots.) Truth be told, that video raises way more questions than it answers, but it's impossible to test the hundreds of variables in one video. I picked the most baseline question I could think of (full firebox, Kingsford, completely used up coal, 225 degrees, no food or water in the chamber, temp controller to minimize temp swings). Hopefully somebody else will build on it with lump, higher temps, natural draft, etc.

Cool. I've been watching a few vids this morning. Currently, I see more pro's to the Summit. It's lack of frailty, ease of cleaning are a couple of biggies for me. I'd definitely be interested in your side by side comp. I'll check out the brisket cook. I believe I've subscribed anyhow. It'll probably pop up on my page. Hmm, having to stir would be a con for me. I wonder if it was started conventionally, it would burn more evenly and if it would effect the burn time? Ah well, like you said, maybe someone will do a more extensive test. Till I come into money, I'll just live vicariously through those that have one and keep smokin on the BGE.

Hi Hei Go, Did you watch this video? I feel like I hit on every point you made except for the "un-heated" one...which was really not the point. One of the things that is difficult as a youtube creator is viewers come to the video with expectations of what should be in a video despite the fact that it's not the topic the video is about. I have a channel full of videos where I mention the virtues (and cons) of the summit. I can't put all of them in every video. I really hope you take the time to watch some of the rest of my stuff. I think you might enjoy it. Thanks for watching.

I'm getting a temp spike 20 to 30 degree after installing bbq guru. I found the onetouch cleaner is not flush with grill and not closing completely on one blade unless I lift up on it. I think that's my problem! Have you seen any similar issues on yours? Weber is sending me a new gasket and onetouch .
@BabyBackManiac
@BabyBackManiac 5 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't but part of the reason is I have had the problem in the past with kettles and try to prevent it. (basically it's caused by big pieces of charcoal getting lodged in the holes and when you sweep, you bend them. The good new is Weber should send you a replacement fan if you call. It's not a huge issue to swap out but I still baby my kettles to avoid the hassle. They should fix the lid leak too if you ask. They developed a solution.

Hi Justin, I was curious as to whether the Slow-N-Sear would fit in the Summit, found a video from Adrenaline (no humor, what a drag) where he's using the Slow-N-Sear and the Drip-n-griddle, and I have a couple of questions if you care to comment. He doesn't use the deflector, says it's a "bad design", and puts the water in the drip-n-griddle instead of the reservoir. So my question is, what's the point? If you're gunna use both Adrenaline products, why not just use a kettle and save yourself 1900 bucks. And why not put the water in the reservoir that was designed for that? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYm5YYOup7-WasU

I hear what you're saying, and I used to feel that way but I looked into the history of kamados a while back and it changed my opinion. As it turns out the original Kamados would not have even qualified if that was a requirement. They were often made of mud, stone, brick or clay. The only reason we even think of them as being a ceramic is because back in the day (before they got big) big green egg switch their formula to ceramic because clay broke so easily… Which ironically is exactly the reason companies started making metal kamados instead of ceramic ones. You should check out the naked Whiz site if you haven't already. He's got a great article on this.

It created narrative (otherwise the last 4 minutes would have been completely random), established a light-hearted tone which is important when you critique something (so I can call out Weber in a playful way...not as a "hater"), provided some behind the scenes/"entertainment value", and differentiates my style of story telling from an already talented and crowded field of BBQ youtubers. I realize this is different than how a lot of people choose to present information, and I'm sorry you didn't like it (and I'm glad you liked the other video better). That's what makes KZbin awesome.
