DISCLAIMER: Portions of this video are extremely oversaturated and there's nothing I could do...trust me. I tried everything. I got the iPhone 13 Pro and it was automatically set to HDR mode for recording and YALL BETTER TURN THAT OFF IMMEDIATELY because it completely ruined the editing process the entire time. To me the steady pace/tone is exactly what makes this album so great. I can understand why some people find it boring but to me it just feels like an hour of him absolutely nailing that sound over and over and over again. Him and his team really showed a deep understanding of 80s electronic music here and there are so many little hits and textures to sink your teeth into in every song
@waltermolina93742 жыл бұрын
In a good way it didn’t feel so steady to me, album tripped me tf out. I’m still trying to get used to this sound. I love the whole 80’s sound but Abel’s really next level with it. It feels hella transcendental.

Abel's commentary on this album:...”picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they're stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you're stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that's what 'The Dawn' is for me."
@quoteth2 жыл бұрын
HERE'S MY TAKE ON THE CONCEPT: since a lot of the musical and lyrical ideas feel very similar to his other albums regarding falling in love and losing someone... here's how i take this. the weeknd is the purgatory's dj and entertainment even in old age, unable to find peace and forever forced to sit in this loop of musical tragedy where his life and sorrows are washed up and engulfed in dance music, watching the crowds move on to the next life. i feel like it is this very layered concept that has both in-universe implications about the exaggerated character of the weeknd but also meta ideas about that persona and how the fans view it. they constantly never want the character of the weeknd to find peace and to move back to this claustrophobic and harsh world of the trilogy mixtapes. he's stuck in this tragic loop while the world dances around him and people beg to hear more heartbreak and revel in it, while a song like blinding lights that's about him regressing into this obsessive and fame-blinded mindset becomes some amazing hit. that's why the ending of dawn fm makes so much sense especially with the visuals from the livestream: he sheds a single tear as he watches the crowd he entertains with his endless loop of heartbreak move on like he is unable to, and maybe every time he spreads his arms wide towards the light and hopes he can move on. and if this is a trilogy as abel is implying, and after hours was the first part, this makes a lot of sense. in after hours, abel falls from stardom and back into his old ways. that makes perfect sense as the start of a story really breaking down the character of the weeknd and his flaws.

@@quoteth I also really like the meta aspect of it lol. One of the easiest criticisms that could be lobbed at Weeknd is that his lyrics are too samey, but in the context of the album it gives that idea a whole new light, this person that's just trapped in existential purgatory never able to move past their worst aspects and end up in a cycle of mistakes and regret (which I'm sure many can relate to). It's just 🤌

From the amazing edits, to the hilarious commentary. Plus the amazing added part in the end where you have gathered all your thoughts and gone through more listens of the album. I have never seen a more detailed and focused analysis of the album not to mention various details I haven't seen anyone else pick up on even myself like the song, "Here we go again", having a similar instrumental pattern to that of "Alone Again" on After Hours. Lastly, the way you connect it to the overall universe within this new trilogy along with the story it tells how Dawn is the purgatory state which sets up the path for him in the afterlife. Outstanding video overall, please keep the immense energy and passion you appear to put into your videos and reviews. You're one of a kind my guy!

Sonically such a great listen, but there's so much more beneath the surface if you go and dig. Abel said in an interview that this album is like being in a car, in a tunnel, in purgatory, waiting in traffic to reach the light at the end of the tunnel (metaphorically and physically). Jim Carrey serves as the DJ for the radio station you hear on the way while you're in traffic. He guides you and gives you insight on why you might or might not make it into heaven. On another level, the album depicts (at least to me) what it feels like to be in a toxic relationship that is dying. The euphoria of the ride up and the climax with "Take My Breath". The Weeknd eventually ends the relationship in Sacrifice - "I want to sacrifice your love for more of the night", because he's toxic and is innately flawed. Quincy Jones depicts what it's like to grow up with trauma and to subconsciously cut off women in your life because of previous childhood issues (Also, Thriller Quincy Jones... from Thriller.... so fitting). Abel then realizes that he loves the girl he cut off and that he's "Out of Time" to get her back. He then tries to get her back with "Best Friends" and "Is There Someone Else?" eventually leading to the realization that she is now married. "Less than Zero" finishes it off with the feeling of closure, but still having some regret deep down that he blew it with his love. He says "You tried your best with me, I know..." acknowledging the fact that he inherently has issues as a human. Jim Carrey tail ends the album with a poem that serves as lessons that you should heed, if you actually want to make it to heaven. "Heaven is for those who let go of regret", among some other really awesome life lessons and metaphors. It's also significant that The Weeknd is old on the album cover, maybe meaning he's been stuck in purgatory for quite some time. Probably my favorite album in years. Never have related to more or felt seen more by a work of art in my life.
