Altie Taylor (42) was one of my favorite RBs of the seventies. He ran with abandon, similar to Larry Brown (43) of the Redskins. He took a lot of punishment, playing in the “black and blue” division for those years and made a lot of big plays. It’s no wonder he was wrung out and ended up in a hospital bed by ‘76. I didn’t know this story about him, but my hat’s off to him. A real warrior of the 70’s NFL.

Those were some sweet looking threads. Why the Lions ever changed is beyond me. I hope they go back to them. Altie and Greg Landry were my favorite Lions back in the 70's. He was at his peak in 1973, but injured his knee and was never the same after that. I had heard Altie was a little out there and once pulled a gun on someone.

The Lions should play outside. Why the Vikings started playing inside is beyond me, but playing at Metropolitan Stadium was a great home field advantage. Teams equated traveling to the Met with polar expedition. The only better home field is Mile High, which has altitude and the threat of sixteen feet of snow at any moment. Bring a parka to an August preseason game. ;)

Interesting where the Narrator chimes " Altie Taylor is mostly forgotten because of the great RB's The Lions had in a "healthy" Billy Simms and Barry Sanders". That made me think about how awesome a player Billy Simms really was before he got injured. Everybody knows how awesome and classy Barry Sanders was, I mean he's GOAT like as far as the RB position is concerned. Billy Simms pretty much carried The Lions to some measure of respectability from 1980 until 1983. It's a shame that some of these players are forgotten. This is an awesome Channel and you do an awesome job of digging up and researching your subjects, I want to say 'Thank You".

I don't know if Taylor was suffering from something akin to CTE or not. I know that they had drafted Dexter Bussey in 1974, and Bussey was very good. Wound up with more career Lions rushing yards. And Horace Clark was a solid receiving fullback.

Well, they have four NFL championships (1935, 1952, 1953 & 1957). It's hard to imagine that in the 50s, they were one of the NFL's showcase teams.

The Lions had these 4 disgruntled players: Altie Taylor, Billy Sims, Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson. All 4 were #1 at their positions in Lions history when they left the team. All 4 wanted out. Sims was unhappy with his contract and signed with the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. That contract was eventually voided. The fact remains that the Lions have had a history of having their best players unhappy.

I thought Dexter Bussey was just as good, the guy who replaced him. The Lions had drafted former Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens at fullback, and Owens became the Lions' first 1,000-yard rusher in 1971. But he, like Mel Farr, blew out a knee. Dexter Bussey came in 1974 and was outstanding; at least as good as Taylor. And Horace King was an outstanding backup in terms of his ability to catch a pass out of the backfield and run with it. Better than Taylor at receiving. Billy Sims was drafted in 1980 and was better than all of them. In fact, better all-around than Barry Sanders if you factor in that Sims was faster in straight-ahead speed than Sanders, much more powerful and could people over, and was an excellent receiver and a better blocker than Sanders. Nobody can touch Barry's razzle dazzle and elusiveness. Barry is an all-time great. But Billy Sims was a more complete back. Sims would have never rushed for negative yardage in a playoff game like Sanders did. He was too powerful - incredibly powerful for a tailback. Sims, like Farr and Owens, blew out a knee. That is one area where Barry was unmatched: his ability to stay injury-free. Outside of his rookie season and a few games in another, Sanders rarely every missed a game. And he rarely ever fumbled.

@@AlbertEinsteinSpock Yes. It's a pity Sims didn't play longer in the NFL. Their '83 team was the best in his era. Even though they were 8-8, several of their losses could have easily gone the other way. And in their playoff against SF, the 49ers were a thoroughly beaten team at the end of the game, even though Danielson threw five interceptions. Murray simply blew what would have been the game winning FG, which was well within his range. A win there would have propelled them to the championship game against Washington.

Who was he traded for? Was it a player or draft pick of any significance to the Lions? That info. might add to the story. Or let's say it was for a 7th round, or later, pick. Since they dont work out the vast majority of the time it may have been worth the gamble.

I made that point in a comment as well. In another video, he talks about Reese McCall of the Colts being drafted in the first round without having impressive college stats. .So why was he drafted in the first round? Maybe he had the physical assets to be a top tier player? If the Oilers only gave up a late round pick or a player of little impact, then this trade would still make sense. These videos are sometimes very interesting, but I suspect he sometimes omits key facts to make the story more intriguing than it actually is.
