Honestly what he said about none of the singers knowing each other in real life resonates with me. I'm really into the cosplay community, particularly steampunk. At fairs it's not uncommon to find someone belting out a sea shanty. Give it 5 minutes or less and 10 people who don't know each other join in. If an instrumentalist is nearby (steampunk events have A LOT of them) you may well find them adding their talents. This video brought me a little bit of what I'd missed out on this past year.

@@hugoj1129 Yes. But the cool part of this is these people weren't singing it as a group. None of these people have met. All the parts were sung separately by people who enjoyed the original and someone did a mash up.

You'll find most sea shanties are pretty catchy. That was the whole point of a shanty, to get the crew working together in rythmic motion on a specific task. I am gratified that there are so many comments about the violin. The violinist's name is Mia Asano, classically trained since the age of 5, went to The Berkley School of Music and now plays a 7-string electric violin, which allows her to play any music for violin, cello, or viola. She is now touring as a duo named "Mia x Ally" alongside Bagpipe phenom Ally the Piper.

Some very talented people here. This is being sung in C minor, which is a very difficult key signature to play on a violin. The violinist handles it amazingly, even winding eighth notes around different harmonies in the song. Also, that low note the bass singer hits is a C2, two octaves below middle C! Very impressive

@MuleSkinnerWS
@MuleSkinnerWS 4 жыл бұрын
Will- I sat down at my piano and played a few keys until I found the notes that matched. I quickly found the "root" to be C, and the A, B, and E were flats, so that marks it as C minor. I've had 12 collective years of formal piano/pipe organ lessons, but I still can't pick a key out without having something to match it to. There are, however, more highly gifted people than myself who can pick out any note just from hearing it. Music is fascinating and I love all styles and genres of it. I wish you much encouragement and success in your musical studies!

A million remixes, orchestrations, variations, official singers and performers have done this song to absurdum, and yet... this is the version I keep going back to, because it's the only one that's AUTHENTIC. It's the only one that's exactly like you might have heard it on a ship 150 years ago. No fancy instruments, no sound mixing, no autotune, no technology of any kind. Just one guy, as if standing on the edge of the deck, singing and pounding the wood of the railing with his fist, joined impromptu by several others, one who happens to have brought a fiddle onboard, to create a simple harmonious masterpiece. No other version had ever managed to capture that feeling.

I have tried to explain to so many how much I love this. This was during quarantine, random people that didn’t know each other, just each individually adding to make this even more beautiful. Really and truly the best art that has come from tiktok

"tounging" refers to cutting long strips, called "tongues", of skin and blubber off the whale carcass to make processing them easier. Melting down a whole whale into oil is not possible, you have to cut it up into manageable strips first.

I wonder if it could come from the french word "tanguer" which means specifically "when a boat is rocking". It will translate as: "When the boat stops rocking (meaning it finally dock in a harbor", we we'll take our leave and go". That could make sense too. As "shanty" came from the french "chanté" (singing), it could be an import navy term too :)

Absolutely love this, the various layers and incarnations of the performance are great. It's stuff like this that get to me, make my eyes water and once again, I realise that music brings us together in so many ways. Love the bass man, too, it really gives a depth to the piece.
