This was actually a rule in Ontario and Quebec for the longshoremen and the fur traders in the mid to late 1800's. You're not going on a long boat ride West, unless you can sing and keep time!

@@doge8825 I don't know. There's just a really, REALLY noticeable voice that shows up when he starts singing right after "Double Bass." If I was hearing them all singing at the same time without anyone being added in in the middle of it with a visual cue, maybe it wouldn't be as noticeable to me.

You'll find most sea shanties are pretty catchy. That was the whole point of a shanty, to get the crew working together in rythmic motion on a specific task. There are different types of shanty for different tasks aboard a sailing ship - short haul shanties, halyard shanties, pumping shanties, capstan shanties etc.

Ok, so this song is amazing and all the singers and musicians who joined in are just incredible, but to be honest, my absolute favorite version is when it's just the group of guys up until 0:24. Not to say that any of the other singers were bad, but I just like it when the guys' voices come together in that deep harmonizing way, and the higher-pitched voice the girl at 0:25 adds to it, while great-sounding, doesn't have the same effect that just gives me that mystical sound of those deeper-voiced men harmonizing so perfectly. She gave it a different feel, more like a song out of a Disney Musical, while the first one transports me right onto an old ship swapping the deck with my fellow crewmates

Tonguing actually refers to the butchering of a whale. When they say, “one day when the tonguing is done, we’ll take our leave and go” refers to taking a cut of meat, leaving the dried husk of the whale, and taking the tea, sugar, and rum as payment

Honestly what he said about none of the singers knowing each other in real life resonates with me. I'm really into the cosplay community, particularly steampunk. At fairs it's not uncommon to find someone belting out a sea shanty. Give it 5 minutes or less and 10 people who don't know each other join in. If an instrumentalist is nearby (steampunk events have A LOT of them) you may well find them adding their talents. This video brought me a little bit of what I'd missed out on this past year.

@@hugoj1129 Yes. But the cool part of this is these people weren't singing it as a group. None of these people have met. All the parts were sung separately by people who enjoyed the original and someone did a mash up.

Imagine going back to the 1880s and telling the sea merhcants that sang this that one day there would be electronics, computers, the internet, phones, cameras, tik tok and their song would be sung by people around the world layered into this thing that would be uploaded to the internet for the whole world to listen to. They would have made you walk the plank.

Fun fact: walking the plank was seen as somewhat of a cowardly way to execute someone since you didn’t kill them directly therefore you are not responsible for the death of the victim who walked the plank. Also pirates rarely did this.
