A beautiful breed of horse. That pinto was absolutely gorgeous. I like the smaller horses, that’s what drew me in to the Caspian Horse breed and the preservation of the breed. Congratulations Lazy J Ranch on a magnificent program.

Beautiful, intelligent ponies. If I didn't have Appaloosa Horses this is what I'd own and ride!

I grew up with one. Welsh ponies are kind of in my opinion the border collie of horses. AMAZINGLY smart, very people orientated. I swear mine thought she was a person. If you never had a Welsh you'd think they'd be like every other horse. Get one and find out.

Owned a 14 hand Welsh gelding many years ago. We competed in barrel racing gymkhana competitions and won over the bigger Quarters. I am now a senior citizen and would like another Welsh gelding for trail riding but could not find one in the Los Angeles California area so settled for a Halflinger cross which just doesn't measure up to my former Welsh.

My dad rented three ponies for my sister's birthday party. One of them was a Welsh pony named Duke. My brother wasn't even two years old and he was able to leave Duke around on a lead rope and Duke followed him along. My dad fell in love with Duke and always wanted to buy a horse for his children. I was the oldest of 12 and I believe I was about 8 years old when Dad bought Duke. We had a little shed like Barn kind of thing in our yard but Duke didn't really like climbing the ramp up into get out of the snow and most of the time he had icicles hanging from his coat. I don't know why he wouldn't go in the shed there was two stalls in there. Dad build him a big Corral but Duke figured out how to lay down and shimmy his way underneath the fence. So dad took the fence down and just staked Duke in the backyard I'm bored of those screws that go in the ground. We had an acre of ground so Duke had plenty of grass when we moved his stake around. Dad always like to take pictures of all of the kids sitting on dux-bak. Eventually my brother and I couldn't fit so we stood besides Duke and XI child as a little baby was basically sitting on Duke's neck. What a patient horse he was. Dad figured out that do could fit in our Volkswagen bus if you took the seats out. Dukes back was at the roof of the VW bus and his head head hangover between the front seats. We would take him every year to the Vienna Baking Company picnic in the Pittsburgh area. Dad would say that's how he earned his hay for the winter. Duke never refused to get into the bus I guess he enjoyed walking the kids around. My brother and I would walk the kids around in a big circle at the picnic. Duke was the highlight too bad we didn't have a bus with a skylight for a sunroof I guess then do could have held his head out the window that would have been as cute site going down the road. My mother didn't want to because she said we couldn't afford it. My dad had five brothers they were all in the Navy together during World War II. He used to go bowling every Friday night with them. I remember Saturday morning being able to get a gumball out of his coat pocket he always bought us bubble gum before I left the bowling alley. My dad said he would quit bowling with his brothers on Friday night to pay for the horse feed for Duke. Horses just can't live on grass Duke always had the best horse and mule feed which had molasses and all kinds of things in it. My cousin's then got horses but they always just fed their horses I guess sweet are oats but Duke always got the best stuff. Duke was the best we rode him in fireman parades and he was a sweetheart didn't have a mean bone in his body. Unfortunately he died when I was 16 and life was never the same without him

Great childhood memories of Duke, thank you for sharing. I think many of us have horses that were life-changers.

@@bartender4877 sounds like you had such a wonderful relationship with your Mare! You must have taken great care of her to live to be 34 years old! I'm sure it was tough when her son died and then when she died because I know when our horse Duke died it was like the end of the world especially for my sister.

@@kathleenmurphy2379 yes it was so hard, I cried like a baby. Her son died suddenly.. I got a call from the farmers daughter that he was acting up , acting strange in the meadow. And she was going to call The vet. Mind you he was a big black Icelandic boy ,we sent him to learn how to be a horse for 4 years so when he was 1 year old he went to a reservation where all stallions come and learn to be a horse. All winter and all summer and all time they stay without intervention off people. Only when the hooves need to be taking care off , they get done. So he came back wild and free. I was the first to be able to ride on him and it was without any problem. So that day I came on the farm and when I got there he was allready gone in the stable😢probably a heart attack. But the mare his mother she died of old age in the meadow , there are different meadows , 1 for mares 1 for geldings and 1 for old horses and a few for cows. But she was on the meadow near the barn with her old friends. She pasted away on her therms without intervention from a vet or humans. The daughter of the farmer said she didn’t call us because it was the end and she was at peace. She didn’t want us to come and perhaps get upset or try to intervene because she said it was before winter and in the winter it gets harder for the oldies. So she was glad she passed in September in the after sun in the meadow at her own therms. I felt so upset but then I understood it was the best way to go for her. If I was there and she would feel me get upset she perhaps wouldn’t have crossed over at peace and in a good mind state. My welsh cob section D was sold to my niece she wanted to do dressage with her... till today I regret selling her because she sold her on and got a bigger horse at the end. I’m the type that you should keep a pet or a friend better said ,till the end. I got so mij from them and in the end I did not ride my old mare but my kids could ride just at slow pace now and then and brush her and give her attention so she would feel important as she was. And not feel old and abandoned. Greetings from The Netherlands

@@bartender4877 thank you for sharing your story and I think you're right about letting your mare die in peace in the meadow. Because my mother took three or four days to die and it was because all 12 of her kids and her brothers and sisters had visited except one. And we think my mother was waiting for him to come say goodbye. Everyone left to get some lunch and I was the first one back to the room and I saw the horrible bed sore on her back... It seemed as though the bones of her back her spine we're showing through the sore. The nurse was giving her a sponge bath since no one was in the room. Mom started to breathe funny and I know my dad wanted to be with her when she passed so I ran through the nursing home trying to find them and brought them back to the room and there were a handful of us with her when she passed. The nurse told us she was probably waiting for a quiet moment when no one was with her to go peacefully. Because when there's people around they don't want to let go. So I think your horse even though you weren't with her died smelling the grass and feeling the sunshine on her and if you have been there your tears may have touched her in a way that would have made her sad to leave you. It sounds like your children had a wonderful childhood with her and how sad her son after all that time being trained that he ended up having a heart attack. I think that's interesting you keep the mirrors in one pasture the geldings in another and the older horses in another. Because one summer we let my horse Duke stay on a farm where my cousins horses were and after he was there a couple days he really got beat up by the other horses he wasn't accepted and I think it was the mayor's that did the worst damage he was bit all over so that was the end of thinking he would enjoy being with the other horses. We didn't have much grass on our acre of ground because of a drought so a lady we took to church on Sunday said she had plenty of grass down near her Cherry Orchard which was near the river. So we took Duke down and he was loved and all that Lush grass but I think he got colic from something there and the kind old lady called and said he was down and we didn't know enough to get them back up and walk and by the time the vet got there he was dead. I think he would have lived longer if we had kept him at home and fed him a but we weren't experts we were just a family that loved our horse! And what a shame that your cousin didn't tell you she was going to sell your horse that you sold her I'm sure that broke your heart! And you're right once you bring an animal into your life you're responsible for them. I keep thinking of these race horses here in the United States than end up getting sold for Slaughter and some of them when you look up there ID numbers they earned a lot of money for their owners in their lifetime. I think these racehorses should have some kind of retirement system like people in the United States do you give so much of your earnings to the federal government and they give you money in retirement back by investing your money supposedly but they don't invest it they just spend it as they get it. But if they took some of the earnings of these race horses and put it into a fund I'm sure we could find homes for these horses if they came with a monthly check to help their expenses!
