This is exactly what Rajiv Malhotra has termed 'Cultural appropriation'. And every asian needs to know this. To give an example, almost everyone knows that Yoga and Pranayama are ancient Indian practices. But what the west does is that they will first label it as satanic practice, then they'll conduct a research into it, prepare scientific literature, rename the practices and call it 'modern breathing techniques' or 'scientific stretching practices'. A particular form of yogic breathing to control anxiety is known as 'box breathing' in the west. Similarly, so many middle eastern clothings are now known by other names in the west. I was actually surprised when I saw that a book named 'Yoga for Christians' was on sale. Yoga ? For christians ? Isn't that for every human being to benefit from, irrespective of religion ?

If non South Asian designers taken inspiration from our ethnic designs and be transparent about it, I see nothing wrong. The 60/70s bohemian fashion and deco had some South Asian/Romani influence especially the colour palettle and patterns. The lady at 2:15 saying it's very European due to this reason. Our world is very Eurocentric. Remember how the European colonists saw themselves as modern and civilised because they were fully clothed, but natives were uncultured barbarians for being half naked. Now we are covered up and see nudity as a taboo, but today European women walk around in underwear, naked on the beach as a statement of modernity and liberty. From then onwards, I DGAF about western modernity.

Anything borrowed/inspired or taken from any culture needs to be acknowledged, referenced and used in a respectful way (I'm thinking back fondly on my university days when papers were handed in with lazer sharp referencing 😅 ) A lot can also be said about historical accounts of cross cultural relations. As someone who has a long line of mixed ancestry (half south asian, half white... due to the Portuguese, Dutch spice trade and British ruling) I'm trying my best to honor my mixed identity without offending anyone. Up till today I feel connected when wearing a saree... but a potto/bindi I don't wear one because my parents have taught me about the spiritual meaning and how to show respect.

I wish we could stop self hatred and racism at home too. Yet many south Asian shows in the UK and USA many of them half of the models are European. I would be ok with this if the love was returned but it is not. Even Zayn Malik who is mixed and had to work really hard for his success still receives racist and demeaning comments today. The owner of a fashion magazine in London who is of Pakistani descent I remember his friends list had not 1 south Asian woman on it. There are many people like this who don't even love their own people so how can we even fight prejudice?

There is a reason behind it. White people stole all the worlds wealth and consolidated it so however hard a business wants to ignore them and not advertise for them, it is not feasible as they have all the money holed up

As a Danish girlie I’m not up to date with any fashion news or scandals, but this video looked interesting. The “Scandi Shawl” could have come about in two ways imo. A. The designer was inspired by indian traditional wear or B. They made a “summer version” of the normally knitted winter poncho, thought they were a genuis, only to come to the realization when this blew up that the design is as old as time. 😂
@aditidit5 күн бұрын
The “traditional shawl” is called a dupatta when it’s made with light cotton, for hot and humid days. I agree with you, it’s like looking at someone taking credit for reinventing the wheel under another name.. 😅😅 I’d be fine if they sold it under the proper name.

it's funny to me how my people (pakistanis) are forgetting their traditional clothes and started dressing like how the western countries are dressed, just to see the western countries copy our traditional clothes, i just hope that all the indians, pakistanis, bengalis... realize how beautiful their culture is, and to not think of it as something embarrassing or wierd.

I totally get it and agree with the point you made in your video. This tendency of Westerners (especially Americans, but not only) to constantly steal style elements from minority cultures is really annoying, but the problem is that this theft, which mainly affects the more "fragile" cultures (such as Asian and African), is unfortunately starting to affect (to a lesser extent) European ones too. For example, I am Italian and you can only imagine how annoying it is to see Americans trying to copy Italian clothing style and sell it to the market as a "new" style "invented" by them and called "Old Money Aesthetic". Anyway, I think all these situations happen for two reasons: 1. I believe that the real reason why they need to "steal" style elements from other cultures is basically because they have lost their own culture, and they feel empty. 2. The reason why they don't understand that stealing is wrong is because they believe that globalization has given them the right to take what they want regardless of any limits.

And it’s only black Americans who are given the right to protest in America , and so we’re apparently appropriating if we even protest as south Asians. Even though it’s a fundamental and universal human right. So we have a minority culture that helps the white American and Europeans continue their plunder of the rest of the world. They really created slaves that uphold the new world order. White people and their black slaves against the whole world. It’s supremely sad how damaging that union is … they forget that once black people were freed, south Asians were brought in as indentured servants! So the slave trade continued and black people look down upon us as the recently freed and emancipated. It’s disgusting.

We have our own fashion industry, trends and preferences. None of these pieces would be seem as very fashionable or worn in Pakistan (I can only speak about this country), and I do not care If they were inspired by certain prints or silhouettes, because it takes nothing away from us. Our fashion industry is very insular, made for us & imported to most of the other south Asian countries.

We sell the rice under other brands names bc the hygiene of your country isn't good, the rice in our shops is different, from other countries. Also USA "stole" from Italy and sell italian food under other brands but we don't make a fuss about it bc it's normal. you, a common person, can't take every food on airplane to the other side of the Ocean, also many big brands can't for the same reason: different laws and hygiene/security standards
@greeniscoollol19 күн бұрын
@whosdis5999 you atumatically assume our brands and food from our culture is unhygienic because of racist stereotypes. Just admit you are prejudiced. Also, the Italians brought their food to America themselves when they emigrated, so you're right that isn't theft. Renaming and taking basmati rice and claiming it as your own is theft.
@greeniscoollol19 күн бұрын
@@disb5999also, there are different types of rice of course, but I've never heard of a rice that grows in America. Maybe golden rice which is artificial but apart from that rice is not and never will be American, no matter how many times you rename it.

Trying to incorporate diverse designs in fashion world is common. It isn’t stealing / discrediting / diluting past nor history. Valentino’ SS 25, designed by Alessandro Michele, is nothing less than iconic nor reinvention (my personal opinion). Yeah they didn’t specifically mention their inspiration from, but I think it’s an amalgamation of Renaissance, Victorian, post French Revolution, Middle Eastern, South Asian (and many more) with a twist of modernity to it. So completely nullifying the creativity by labeling it as stealing is not a nuanced approach. I believe the once colonial society should accept the fact that culture exchanges doesn’t account for stealing but rather a step in evolution.
