The Who are my all time favourite live band. I recommend you check out their performance of "A Quick One, While He's Away" at the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus.

It's funny hearing all these reactors analyze the lyrics so intently - back in the day we just listened to "the song" and liked it for what it was, didn't dive into it's meaning.

I do think "Who Are You" from 1978 ought to be the next Who song you explore. Musically and lyrically, they call out and challenge the Punks who thought themselves equal.

My favorite Who song! This one is an absolute classic and so deep. Absolutely no faults whatsoever. Thanks for reacting!

According to Pete Townsend, the song was originally written for a musical/rock opera that never happened. It depicted a spy, a double agent, never able to voice his own thoughts and feelings. This also adds meaning to "if I swallow something evil" (reference to cyanide capsules) and "keep me warm, let me wear your coat" a reference to both the concept of owning up to being a spy (sometimes called coming in from the cold) and possibly not being honest even then, as "let me wear your coat" is like wearing the enemy's uniform so you blend in - the origin of the concept of a "turncoat."

Loved your reaction, man. You cannot go wrong with The Who. Maybe try "The Real Me" (QUADROPHENIA version), "Who Are You" (film clip), "See Me, Feel Me" (from Woodstock) and some of their earlier songs like "I Can See For Miles", "The Kids Are Alright" and "My Generation". The Who always have great, insightful, personal lyrics and magnificent music.

The line that I always loved, as I believe it showed the character really wanting to be better, is "And if I swallow anything evil, stick your finger down my throat..." To me, this is the pleading for help. He knows he is doing wrong and is lost, but he's coming to the point where he is understanding he's not beyond redemption even if he doesn't yet know where to turn.

The WHO….. “The Kids Are Alright” Tour 1989. Rich Stadium Buffalo N.Y…….. AWESOME After the concert the Who were being interviewed on the local radio station and the DJ asked the band…. “So what do you think about that new RAP music coming out”…. Roger Daltrey laughed and started to answer when John Entwistle said….. “let me answer this one….. It seems to me that if you can’t write music, can’t play music, can’t sing music, if you know absolutely nothing at all about music, well then, you do rap now don’t you”….. Then. Pete Townshend said….. “If Hitler was going to come back and torture the world again he would use rap music. Roger Daltrey laughed and said…. “Isn’t that the truth”

"The best is yet to come..." , may sound too pie-in-the-sky, too Rose-colored-glasses, you know? We always have to do our part to bring about the best, day by day, moment by moment. That said, we are only human and we can't always be happy, hopeful, energetic, positive, etc. Especially in this difficult, troubled world. So, "The best is yet to come..." means "have hope and try to keep going", but also give yourself space to grieve, process pain and stay real with your own regrets or difficulties. It's OK to be human, in the downs and the ups.
