Teenage confusion, working class anger and loud, raucous rock - all elevated to high art by the genius of Townshend. Nobody ever took rock as far as the mighty Who 🎸Thanks for reviewing.

This entire album is prefect. Everything great about The Who is here. Incredible writing, great musicianship, great lyrics, and my favorite thing about much of The Who, great time changes in songs, so you never actually know where they are going. One song, can be four different songs.

that lyric is wrong, its not "make love to a stranger", it is Statements to a Stranger, as per the actual lyric sheet on the album

I've been listening to Quadrophenia for 45 years. It's definitely statements to a stranger.

The lyric is about someone just asking for directions, and he goes into his own philosophical oratory.

This album is amazing. I can't imagine the work it took to make it.

I recommend watching the movie, Quadrophenia. A very young Sting appears as Ace Face.

Yes, Billy Jo from Green Day is a big who fan. So most likely a direct connection

That's the secret. They're all Jimmy. (At the end of "I've Had Enough" he lets his scooter run off a cliff.)

Here is the link to the Quadrophenia rock opera album that might help explain this album. Each of the 4 Who band members have their symbolic themes. The two 1973 movie soundtracks have additional songs in different sequence and a couple drum tracks by Kenney Jones who sadly had to replace Keith Moon who passed away. Sting (The Police), has a prominent role in the 1973 movie. Although very moody, one of the best epic albums EVER...if you're in a dramatic mood. Outstanding musicianship, creativity and energy. All 4 Who members play lead fighting for attention against each other yet somehow manage to shut-up and respect each other's role when appropriate. Just magical. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrophenia.

The movie came out in 1979. Moon died in 1978.

@@Alan_CFA" “Get Out and Stay Out” and “Joker James” is Kenney Jones first on-record appearance as a drummer in the Who after the death of the original drummer Keith Moon in 1978. “Four Faces” was recorded during the original 1973 sessions, but not used for the 1973 double album."

Here's the link to I've Had Enough from the movie soundtrack. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnOZZ6WhespmkLs I think I'm one of the few who prefer it. I like how the strings add something to some of the repetitive passages, and especially how the banjo and back beat guitar are up in the mix in the "had enough ..."parts.

I've always felt that American Idiot is Green Day's tribute to Quadrophenia and The Who in general.

"I try to number those who love me" That means he's counting the people who love him. And he doesn't think there's very many. And it's "statements from a stranger", not make love to a stranger.

In several of these songs in the beginning of this album, they have been given you preludes to other songs coming up. Love reign o'er me, is a song on this album.

Love reign o’er me it’s just the taste of the song that’s coming later. This is a concept album so early and he gives you a lot of small pieces of songs that will come later.

So they close out the first LP of the album with a hidden masterpiece that has remained that way (hidden) from most of the music listening public. Only Who fans know of this incredible song.

You need to watch the movie Quadrophenia. It will answer all your questions about the songs and their content. The songs intertwine with each other throughout the album, and also with the movie. Some albums are much better understood when you pair them with the movie that goes with them (Quadrophenia, Tommy, the Wall). Watch the movie, then listen to the album, and you'll say, "Oh, now I get it".

The actual lyric in "Is It In My Head" is "statements to a stranger" NOT "make love to a stranger". Whoever put together the lyrics made a mistake.

Existentialism vs. spirituality - a big theme on this album. This was my senior year of HS favorite album. I predict 5:15 and Love reign O'er me will be your final favorites from this as they were mine!

Dude.... You will NEVER understand the lyrics until you read the liner notes.... and see the movie. There is very little political commentary here. The main theme is about a completely out of place teen who just wants to fit in and find out his real identity and start living it. The booze and dope just hinder everything, along with his hypocritical and insensitive, dysfunctional parents.
