Emergency responders can be heard asking whether construction workers were on Francis Scott Key Bridge as police tried to halt traffic moments before the structure collapsed. 'The whole bridge just fell down,' a dispatcher is heard saying seconds later.

The two MdTA officers were on duty on either side of the bridge that night as a precautionary measure to slow traffic down in the active work zone taking place on the bridge that evening. Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction with construction barrels. If work had not been occurring that night, it is unlikely the officers would have been in a position to act so quickly and many motorists would have likely died by either being on the bridge when it fell or subsequently driving into the gap.

How about sub surface earthworks pilings and concrete so a ship will ground before hitting the columns? Also how about tugs required to escort vessels past the bridge? If it's critical infrastructure to both the port and the local roadways and the piers aren't protected from the main channel, surely that would have been a prudent requirement.

@ShikadaPOW
@ShikadaPOW Ай бұрын
Both sides were closed in time. The officer with white captions at 20 seconds says he has stopped all traffic on the "outer loop". This would be the northbound lanes on the south end of the bridge. The officer with white captions at 55 seconds says he has stopped the "inner loop", which would be the southbound lanes on the north end of the bridge. Following the collapse, officers on the north side then say someone on the south side still needs to stop the northbound traffic, but they were understandably busy and stressed and probably missed the earlier broadcast saying it had been done. Probably not the best radio conduct since they describe a speculative problem they cant see from their position, rather than confirming the situation on their end of the bridge. The officer with blue captions confirms at the end that he has stopped the northbound traffic.

Main cause lack of common sence for the Master Duty officer and to the Pilots .... they were en route down stream and when ship suddenly goes to NUC ( Not Under Commarnd ) and if you dont have much distance to move the ship away from the passage or to try and drop anchor to reduce the drift THEY SHOULD HAVE GONE ON THE PASSAGE with the help of rudder movement and managing the bow with BOW THRUSTER.... the only thing can happen is until the momentum stops she will drift down stream then not a big issue to get some help from tugs and move out of the passage and clear it for the rest of the ships.... NUC happens mostly when main engine fails or stearing fail... main engine fail nothing can do until it get rectified and start but if stearing fail there are other methods to manage stearing including manually... if power fail on a ship like this there at least three main generators if one goes off there is always the next in stand-by mode to get started or start even manually... if those gens goes off still there is the emergency generator which give power to the ships vitals....
@pythons206
@pythons206 Ай бұрын
When they mean the ship vitals they probably mean lighting and stuff, bow thrusters arent really considerd vitals because there only used when going into port and anyways it takes a min or two for all the computers to boot back up
@shermanmatthew9413
@shermanmatthew9413 Ай бұрын
@@pythons206 thats why i said they were LACK OF COMMON SENSES .... not just lighting and stuff but the emergency air compressor to some essential pumps and bridge navigation equipments ect ect and a big ship like this consist with more than two main generators ( usually three or four ).... so even in a black-out either by manually can be started.... sure untill the computers started if skilled when receives power till you get the computers you can handle equpments... See the ship wasnt up-stream but it was in the passage going down the river so its down-stream so eventually ship moves down with the river current thus by the momentum given by the main engine so if they were keen enough to keep the ship in the channel they could have skipped the damage.... and yes bow thrusters are used to get aid when berthing and departing from pier.... thats the concept but if had COMMON SENSE could have been used to keep the bow steady during drift till the momentum stops...what i see is they should have kept the ship on the passage rather than tried to get it out of passage....

It is criminal not to have a alert system (loud voice/bright flashing lights) to warn those around in case things like this happens on the ship. It could have run on its own backup power. Should be mandatory. I am sure it had been brought up by someone in a boardroom meeting, but they thought it was too expensive. Warning lights on both sides of the bridge like a train crossing as to know not to enter the bridge or along with electronic billboard signs that says not to enter when this gets rebuilt?

Some these bridges have their own patrol units. The one going into new Orleans has its own patrol unit. They might been in the area already. And it's 1:30 in the morning. They got lucky it wasn't 5 o clock rush hour and the bridge was packed bumper to bumper.
