Talk’s Mike Graham is joined by oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall, discussing the hearing into the deaths of five people who were killed when a submersible imploded while diving to the wreck of the Titanic.
A whistleblower has testified that he had “no confidence” in the manufacturing of the sub.
Dr Simon says: “The whole thing was a botched job.”

A lot of the information that is coming out regarding Stockton Rush and his company shows a clear sign of misinformation he gave to the people who signed those liability contracts. He gave them false information so I believe that void the contracts.

If judged by the standards of soliciting money from investors, claims of providing false and misleading information such as Uni of Wash & Boeing involvement (true for Cyclops-I but perhaps not Titan proper) could be viewed as misleading (Holmes got 11 years for implying big pharma involvement in Theranos); were the last four ever informed that all the test Models failed? Or that about every previous dive had problems?

Doubt that's much help when the people that signed the contracts are dead & the company is as good as bankrupt so there's nothing for the family's to get.

@ruthcollins2841 Did the tourists know this sub was unsafe? If I go on a flight as a tourist, I expect the Authorities to have very good control of the licensing of both the aircraft, its maintenance, licenced engineers, anyone who touches a part of that aircraft, then most importantly the pilots that take control and accept responsibility for that aircraft and its passengers, us tourists or other travelers!! The word tourists is the key as those who had a financial interest in that sub can privately implode themselves (commit suicide), but not to tourists. So. I totally disagree with your post.

@@Alan-OnRunway01 If you are stepping onto a mainstream airline, you can rest assured it is certified by that nations aviation authority. If you step onto a private plane which has an "N number" (Other nations might have different codes) And that registration is current, you can rest assured that plane had its current airworthiness inspection. You write a check for a private plane with no registration or certificate, you are a fool and on your own

His comment about the sailing yacht Bayesian are simply not true. The captain did not have the 184 foot Bayesian's centerboard down, which would have taken her draft down to 32 feet preventing her from capsizing. With centerboard up she was unstable, the captain was aware of the storm and should have had it lowered. Unexpected high winds hit the mast heeling her over and she capsized. She sank quickly because she was not prepared for the storm and had access hatches open, in addition the aft lounge is open below decks with large sliding glass doors. The captain is being investigated the Italian authorities for manslaughter. She in shallow water so she will be recovered, and restored.

Depth ratings could be like ratings of my engine’s connecting rods. My standard engine has a red line of say 6,000 rpm. All this means I shouldn’t throw a rod at 5,500 rpm and can run at that rpm for periods of time. I might be able to push to 8,000 rpm if the limiting factor is fatigue failure and NOT over stress failure; if 8,000 rpm is fatigue limited the life at 8,000 won’t long. (I have no intention to find out just what safety factor my engine has.) According the USCG presentation Titan made 14 dives to or beyond 3200-3300 m (quite a few deeper). Titan thus had a service life (based upon a data set of 1 sub) of 14 dives to at most to 3200 m but adjusting to account for some dives to 4000 m maybe a life of 10 dives to 4000 m. Rush supposedly came from an aerospace background, and the concept of a limited life component should have been a familiar concept to him. The major aircraft manufacturers probably spend a large percentage of a new model development cost on trying to determine what the service life (hours of flight or take-off/landing cycles) of each component and how often to inspect for fatigue. When they get it wrong bad things happen as in the 1950s Comet Jetliner explosive decompression (a fatigue failure of the fuselage) which occurred far sooner than expected.

I feel bad for them too, but, for the child most of all. The paying customers, who could afford such extravagance, certainly could have done due diligence and ascertained that this guy was an idiot who had no business being a submersible pilot. Don’t get me wrong though, Rush and his company are at fault. I just hope this doesn’t lead to all sorts of needless regulation on a market that only has a handful of potential customers worldwide.

They knew it would fail. It wasnt a matter of “ if” but rather “when”. About 50 people from the industry tried to convince Stockton to either abandon the carbon fiber or at least have extensive testing performed. Lots of people spoke out about the use of carbon fiber and even people employed by the company went to the authorities . Carbon fiber does not react the same to compression and tension. The concern voiced by professionals in the industry was alway that there would be a failure because of the repeated cycles of stress on the carbon hull.

In addition to extremely poor safety standards, Mr Rush also caught the WOKE mind virus and prioritized ridiculous identity politics over hiring someone with actual real world experience, completely jeopardizing the safety of his passengers. Here is his exact quote "He didn't want to hire "50-year-old white guys" with military experience to captain his vessels because they weren't inspirational" well he certainly got what he asked for, tragically his passengers paid for his horribly divisive and exclusionary decision with their very lives.
