I wish more bass players mentioned Michael Schuman. His basslines are among my absolute favorite and I've not heard anyone like him. I like Nick Oliveri's playing but it was suited for early QOTSA and Kyuss. I dont think it works as well for mordern QOTSA. I love early QOTSA and Blues for the Red Sun by Kyuss but I'm sick of people discrediting Schuman when he really doesn't deserve it. Dude is incredible

I've never heard anyone discredit Mikey, but if I ever do...they'll be waking up looking like a dipshit with missing teeth and a migraine.
@duhlike Жыл бұрын
Disagree. I always heard him more as a hired gun rather than a fixture in the band. Oliveri, for example, was a prominent figure and personality in the group. It made for more interesting and engaging records and songs. Michael Shuman is in the background just obeying what Josh wants. His parts are too busy and rarely serve the songs. Less is more a lot when playing bass. He clearly doesn't understand that concept and leaves no room for suspense or climax in his playing. For sure.
@CharlesWillisBonsai Жыл бұрын
@@duhlikehe's a good bass player, but seems more like one of Joshs cronies rather than an equal like Oliveri. I liked the punk edge Oliveri brought as well as his vocals. I like new Queens, but it's been the Josh Homme experience for a while.
@CCDaDon158 ай бұрын
@@CharlesWillisBonsai Mikey has more writing credits than Nick does. I Appear Missing was mostly Mikey, Dean, and Troy. Actually most of the last album was Mikey and Dean writing the music. Josh always writes lyrics of course. But. I don’t know how you can act like he’s not making decisions when songs like The Evil Has Landed and Obscenery are majority about the bass lines. He also absolutely does not play like Josh so it’s not like Josh is writing the parts in the demo. You guys really need to get over Nick not being in the band anymore because I really don’t understand how you can come away with that. Sure, Nick said that around Era Vulgaris came out. He was saying that about Alain and Troy. Mikey wasn’t in the band yet.
@CCDaDon158 ай бұрын
@@duhlikehow do you reconcile saying he’s in the background but his parts are too busy and flashy? Nick played a ton of flash too. Better Living is a ridiculous bass song, In the Fade too. Lost Art. Leg of Lamb?? Headache??? Deaf is pretty busy too. Mikey is also never in the background on stage. He’s always thrashing around. If he was in a different band they would be calling him a spotlight hog. Mikey also has most of the say in the setlists these days with Josh. Most of the song writing has been a collaboration between Mikey Troy and Dean the last few albums too. You guys are delusional lol

@@bennyjetsonmontreal6113 Like Clockwork Villains and In Times New Roman are supposed to be a trilogy. Although, I don't really see any correlation other than that they were all designed artistically from BoneFace. I think maybe they started calling them a trilogy. Just as an easy out. In case people criticize too heavily on the new stuff. They can always say, 'oh well, they're all part of the same trilogy, so it's to be expected.' 'you can expect different material moving forward'. etc. But yeah, they rode that Like Clockwork train for a long time. Highly doubt we'll get anymore cool and surprising records out of them.

One of the things I love about this album is it really feels like a culmination of their other albums in a unique way without sounding derivative. Negative space gives the same energy as “I say by the ocean”, Paper machete is a lot like “little sister”, made to parade like “domesticated animals” so on and so forth.

@@DiamondLifer Josh only wrote and recorded the bass on their debut album and Lullabies. Everything post 2007 is Schuman writing and recording bass. All the members of QOTSA are multi instrumentalists and provide input on each other's parts from what I've heard but Schuman is undoubtedly the mind behind bass in QOTSA post 2007. The basslines in Like Clockwork are unmistakably Schumann's style of bass playing and very distinct from Homme's basslines. Also Bass Magazine just did an interview with Schuman where he talked about his creative process for writing the basslines on this album so yeah it is Schuman in this album too.
