It's baffling to me that so much evidence of Russ's innocence was right there in their faces and they still charged him. The craziest thing of all the evidence, to me, is that the victims sock was used to smear blood all over the house and put back on her foot, and they didn't seem to think that was at all strange. She wanted to make it look like more of a blood bath, when it already was, and looking at the photo shown in the video, the blood was obviously smeared all over in an unnatural way. Her body wasn't dragged to leave those smears, so clearly someone smeared it themselves for a reason. And the victim was wearing one bloody sock. How was this detail alone not enough to make them question the entire case? The jury really screwed up only awarding Russ $2 million. That's not justice for what he was put through. But I'm glad to hear there's finally an investigation into the investigation...(an investigation into an investigation.... that shouldn't be a sentence that exists).

I live in Troy where this took place. I went to high school there. I don’t like when you say things like “a very believable witness” the police should’ve realized 1) she changed her life insurance policy and it wasn’t even fully verified during the murder… the life insurance policy change? All money goes to Pam. Hmm first red flag 2) not even taking into account that when someone finds a loved one like this YOUR MIND DOESNT GO TO MURDER. Why? Your brain can’t process it, can’t believe what it’s seeing. 3) Pam immediately started saying things to imply that the hubby did it.. Like they didn’t take a step back and say “hey… do we think… that maybeeee, what if it was someone else?” It’s infuriating that an innocent man who just lost his wife, sat in jail. Unethical, corrupt, _and_ totally incompetent, is an apt description of the police force’s handling of Betsy’s case. That’s what happens when the investigating officers are cognitively challenged and morally bankrupt. The amount of compensation Russ received was entirely inadequate, and it’s time that those responsible for scapegoating him are delivered the justice they truly deserve. @@1888.cfc. I recently watched a new episode of American Justice last week and that’s exactly what I thought from the interviews from the prosecutor Leah Askey. She says they let Russ go after the first arrest because they couldn’t win. She says other things about winning and it was clear she didn’t care about the truth or justice. As a prosecutor the focus should be getting to the truth and effecting justice. After the show I ordered Russ’ attorney Joel Schwartz’s book on the case, “Bone Deep,” (just finished it yesterday) and again I was struck at how she focused on the win. It’s ego. I didn’t feel like she cared about the victim or the family. The fact that she and the police hid the exculpatory luminol photos from the defense and she had somebody get up and lie that the camera malfunctioned and the photos didn’t turn out and to take their word that the scene showed signs of a clean up that was detrimental to Russ, shows how Machiavellian these people are. Before the 2nd trial somebody from the prosecutors office anonymously sent the disks with the photos on them to Schwartz which proved the witness committed perjury and the prosecution had to have been behind it. Boy, was Askey surprised during the 2nd trial when Schwartz pulled those photos out of his hat and confronted the witness who had lied in the first trial. She’d do anything to win and so would those involved with her. And after Russ’ acquittal she put in a request to have all the case evidence destroyed even though the case hadn’t been resolved, except in her tiny mind. Thankfully, somebody ignored her request.

As if there’s a “right” way to handle seeing a loved one dead. I see this way too much, when are investigators going to realize that everyone reacts differently in these situation? Heck I got robbed at gun point while working at a gas station when I was younger…and they thought I was in on it cus I smiled at the guy. It wasn’t me that smiled at the guy, it was my survival mode. I had no control over what I did, my mind was protecting me from losing it. I was lucky, but this poor husband suffered. Ain’t no money gonna make up for what they did to him. And all because he didn’t act “accordingly” to a high adrenaline situation. That’s Sad!

This is why the jury system is just as reliable as a polygraph. These type of cases need to be handled by a chamber of multiple judges. In civic law countries heavy cases are judged by at least three judges. Every judges writes his own opinion. The youngest, least experienced, goes first so that the seniority of the other two doesn’t influence his/her opinion. You need professionals judging these things. Not some randoms pulled of the street.

I’ve been a juror twice. I was appalled at things that motivate jurors in the deliberations room, such as: “The guy is guilty. Just look at him. I can always tell.” “Hurry up and just declare him guilty. My child has a ballgame and I need to go.” “Guilty already! I need to get home and cook supper.” Do you see? These are actual comments made by fellow jurors. Fortunately for the Defendant, we were unable to reach a verdict because a fellow juror and I refused to give in (the actual evidence was weak, and at the time our ADA almost never proved his cases). So it’s of utmost importance that you, if you’re ever called to do your civic duty, listen carefully and follow the law as it pertains to the jury hearing any case. If I were to commit a crime, Heaven forbid, I certainly hope the 12 people deciding my fate were as meticulous as I was when I served.

Someone else said that it is very difficult dealing with a jury who are so poorly educated/ uninformed/ bigoted and closed-minded. They refuse to consider FACTS and science because they don’t understand it. Innocent people go to jail or worse/ and criminals go free to repeat offenses.
@iamV100102 жыл бұрын
I was part of a jury trial as well. I came home every night in tears. It is shockingly bad in there. People are judgemental and barely care about the evidence or the case. They do not weed out the ones with bias. Lawyers pick jurors based on how likely the person is to side with their arguments. They always ask you if you understand what reasonable doubt is. No one seems to truly know. The ones who would make decent jurors sit up there and lie to get out of it. So you're left with people who just want to make it about themselves or think they are on an episode of fkin Law and Order. It. Is. SHOCKING.

I was so bothered by the jury’s actions, I called up the Circuit Court Clerk - an acquaintance - to voice my concerns. Later, I saw our part of the state’s DA, and told him the same thing. He said he knows it’s flawed, but it’s the best system we have.

I work in law enforcement and I understand how easy it is to get tunnel vision on a suspect, especially due to the fact that it is usually the spouse or significant other who commits the crimes against their spouse, but this borders on if not surpassed incompetence. All they had to do is follow the timeline given by the defense witnesses. Instead, they fabricate facts that don't exist in order to make facts line up with their misgivings..

Everyone gets tunnel vision to an extent when someone is murdered. Especially, when social media is involved. It's guilty until proven innocent. Look at the Idaho 4 case. Everyone is ready to send Koeburger to the electric chair and we haven't really even seen any real SOLID evidence. Objectivity is hard to find these days. I have a ton of respect for law enforcement and the duties they perform every day. It isn't easy. I have even more respect for you for admitting it is easy to get tunnel vision. I know a lot of people will see that as being a bad cop somehow when in reality it's human nature. If you didn't push against that tunnel vision and just went with it it would be a different story, but to just admit you've experienced it is very normal.
