I remember see The Wild Bunch with college buddies at the Laconia theater. We all expected a typical western shoot'em up. Then opening shoot just left us with mouths agape. The final shootout blew us all away. We'd never seen anything like it before. The movie broke all the rules. The film is brilliant, the dialog unforgettable and the characterizations perfectly realized. Hardly surprising it's considered one of the best westerns ever made and on most lists of the greatest films. These guys ultimately deserved their fate but as anti-heroes they, because of how they were portrayed by actors largely playing against type, they engendered much audience sympathy, even respect. Considering their professions, they chose the only true, honorable way to end their lives.

I could only imagine seeing this on the big screen especially when it first came out, I saw this a few decades later as a kid or maybe early teen also expecting a typical western and my jaw dropped and I was speechless even then at the violence and the whole way this movie was, I'd been raised on horror movies but you expect violence in those not much in old westerns, it left an indelible impact on me, all the shootouts and camera effects and ideas were brilliant, the characters, none heroes, anti heroes at most, almost all drawn like months to a flame born to go out In a proud blaze of glory

Edmund O'Brien was so good in this scene. I mean what guts to play so out there like he did. And then modulating down with the Deke Thornton puzzlement. The Wild Bunch is one of the finest characterized Western scripts ever composed. You find yourself rooting for a bunch of robbers and killers. And feeling something for them as they go out with all guns blazing.

5 Oscar nominated, or winning, actors ; add in Robert Ryan, to make 6 ----- The best Western ever made, & , as a lifetime lover of cinema, my All-time # 1. This is Peckinpah's finest, exploring his recurring themes : the closing of the Old West , & loyalty among men.----It's a film made by men ------about men------& for men, only. Women do not understand " The Wild Bunch " . and neither Peckinpah or Waylon Green cared as they created, the screenplay. ----------I understood it from the very 1st time I saw it on that Friday night, in Downtown Denver, the old Paramount Theater, on 16th St. & Glenarm St's. . I saw all 3 showings, & walked home late at night, knowing I'd seen a Masterpiece. -------------------------------------MJL, 75 y/o

For me The Searchers is the best Western in film history. Please understand, all of the films you mentioned are very good (I like True Grit the most of the three). I, personally, am just not taken with the story of The Wild Bunch. I don't get into the "criminal has a change of heart" stories. Especially when said criminals are involved in the slaughter so many people (like how many people enjoy when Crazy Lee murders the three people at the end of the bank robbery scene, shooting them in the back with the shotgun). The ending of the film (the shootout with Mexican soldiers) has it's moments, but the "confusovision" (as I call it) is just that (and I despise it's use today in so many films). I love the cast of the film though. From Holden on down, so many wonderful actors. As for my statement about important "violent" film, it helped usher in the use of gratuitous violence in movies. To me, all that blood is no better than a grindhouse film. Reminds me of when I watch "The Long Riders" by Walter Hill (which isn't really as bad as the Wild Bunch, in terms of blood, and uses many of the same film techniques). Don't get me wrong, I have seen The Wild Bunch numerous times. However, as I get older, the film just seems to get worse for me. I suppose I just don't get off on the violence as I once did.

kyokogodai tbf I don’t really think the bunch has a change of heart. More so just Pike feeing sorry for Angel as he was a part of his gang. They still have their final stand at Mapaches village at the end of the film which is pretty brutal and the way they would’ve wanted to go out. As outlaws not abiding by the new way of life/civilisation.

THE best film ever made, period ! And, THE all-time #1 Western. For once, Sam Peckinpah was given free reign to make the film he wanted to make. The result ? A true Masterpiece of cinema. With over 1200 cuts & jump cuts, this film broke the rules, & became legendary, in that crazy summer of '69.
