Emilio Fernandez, who played General Mapache was the real deal. In 1923 he quit his studies and joined Huerista rebellion in 1923. He fought in the very rebellions they were portraying on screen.

At the risk of being labelled a nit picker that's not exactly correct. There were a lot of revolutions in Mexico and the one that features in the Wild Bunch was in 1911-1913 and involved José Victoriano Huerta Márquez. The revolution which Emilio Fernandez joined was in 1923 and was led by Felipe Adolfo de la Huerta Marcor, no relation to Victoriano. But you're right that he was the real deal and would have been able to advise Peckinpah about the realities of a Mexican revolution. I believe his father was a Mexican revolutionary general but I haven't been able to find out more about that if it's true.

What an absolutely amazing performance by Emilio Fernandez as the drunken General Mapache. A brilliant screenwriter, actor and director from Mexico's golden age of movies, he's the most famous person in the history of Mexican cinema, a cultural icon know for his strong machismo. He should have won an Oscar for best supporting role. The Wild Bunch had everything. What a movie.

This is the best Western ever made. And the fact that Fernandez plays Mapache shows how well cast the picture is, and how smart Peckinpah was. That gatling gun will be very important at the end of the film.
