With the most recent chapter in the claiming rule saga, there was no better time than now to look back at the infamous claiming rule and how it's been used in the past.

The way I see it, is that cheating is an integral part of all motorsports. Every single team in every single garage in every form of racing is cheating in some way, shape, or form. If you're not cheating or trying to find loopholes in the rules, you're not trying to win. That said, I think if you get caught, you should get the book thrown at you. Racing is about finding the grey areas in the rules and trying to get away with it, and things like the claim rule in amateurs are probably the best way to maintain the amateur spirit

There is literally no rule that says you can't run "Factory " parts. it's a mod class. Just be prepared to lose them if you bring them.

I think if there is a claim rule, then they should honor the rule. Give up the bike…no strings attached. It’s there for a reason.

The claiming rule was originally in place with the AMA for ALL pro races in the 1970s. The object was to avoid competition bikes being one-offs. It was not designed for the big 4 and more to come up with technology no one could afford much less have access to, not protect secrets. Boone raced a works Honda for quite a while. His problem was racing in local small time unsanctioned competitions and taking all the money home. THAT was the implicit evil in his scheme.

The rule shall be kept in place, but there should also be penalties for "the big guys" to intimidate or blackmail the person claiming the bike, like they did to Brennan at Loretta's.

If they aren't cheating (with super expensive unobtainium) then it seams selling their bikes at twice the original value could actually even serve them well! I mean, isn't that what the aftermarket is all about?

I like the claim rule, I just think the cash buyer should be Anonymous. For protection.
@brianjones7681

Can't do that...because then manufacturers and all their buddy's could also "anonymously" put a claim in also and probably get their bike right back.

The Deegan bike should have been claimed plain and simple. Any outside influence against the claim should have been penalized.

I think it should only apply to factory backed bike teams. Not the amateur riders.

Guys like Mike, Ryan and Hayden and all those top “Amateurs” really are not Amateurs of motocross, they are the next step up to being a Pro sooner then later. My Son wants to start racing at 19 now and if he has to race with them, at this point its a waist of money. If he doesn’t care, there is no price tag to watch my Son enjoy racing. When those guys have met their power limit on their bikes, the next step is get on a bigger bike, but loose their 65 or 85 or 105 titles. Let them spend or get support from the factory’s! Just have a “modified amateur motos”. Cost more to enter and AMA can make more money’s. Then that way for guys like my Son will or may have a better opportunity to be out front with their Telants they built up and the bikes they get directly from the Bike shops. The Semi factory bikes can be sold to the up and coming riders . Its like what The G.O.T. Was wanting with Arenacross riders before the supercross events.

I don't feel anyone has a right to claim anyone's bike...if u do u should have to add cost of hanldbars grips exhaust and suspension upgrades...then u can by they bike...most riders on any level upgrade those things on there bikes ...even clutches...so no these are not stock bikes but everyone racing at that level has changed all these things ...now it gets weird when people think there is voodoo engine work going on...either way ur not claiming stock off the showroom bike and if ur gunna try to claim one u should be paying more than a stock showroom bike...there are to many racers out there struggling pouring everything they have into these bikes to have someone claim one for next to nuthing

The fans didn't cause this. Those that did should take responsibility for their actions, instead of acting like they're under attack.

You and everyone else keep saying “skirt the rules” when you and everyone have zero evidence that actual rules were broken. Being sponsored by a factory team ( I’m guessing everyone there in the race and I mean all races had some kind of “factory” support) doesn’t mean you have some kind of specially made factory engine with special gearing and even special electronics on the bike. What we have here is just a plain and simple “jealous of Deegan” scenario and I know that’s just the way it is but look at all the other kids around the country that didn’t get to go to LLs and race with their barely modified bikes. It’s time to stop talking about this and move on

I think its the dumbest rule ever. If i won a title and any level and someone tryed to take my bike off me even if ut was completely stock id be throwing hands and setting there trailer on fire

Why?? The rule is a great way to stop people with more money from building factory. Bikes. Its not just mx that has this rule. Its very common in amateur motor sports. If your bike was stock you just got paid 2x what it was worth new. Thats a pretty good deal if your playing by the rules. I would be stoked to get 17,000 for my clapped out race bike.

The kid should have got the bike. Case closed. The fact they didnt says more than enough about the fact they had factory parts in it. Complete bullshit
