The Wild Story of Greg Hetson

Played in three of the most influential founding punk rock bands in the U.S., Redd Kross, Circle Jerks and Bad Religion, leaving two of them in a sudden rush and getting kicked out of the third after nearly 30 years. As discreet as he is wild, Greg Hetson is one of the biggest legends in punk rock history-even if nobody tells you that.

I met him at Punk Rock Karaoke last year!! I'd share my picture if I could lol but I'm good friends with Chris Doherty from Gang Green who is friends with Greg and because of them I was on the guest list for PRK that night. One of the few times in my life that I was starstruck when meeting one of my favorite musicians. He's so sweet!!! Bad Religion is one of my all time favorite bands and I miss him being a part of them. But this guy is the shit and so incredibly humble and down to earth.

BR's songs are some of the best guitar songs of all time. You can play them on anything and its still a great song. any style it still works. Like Cash or Doors. Holy shit just got to the part bout his daughter trolling punk rockers on tiktok. That is amazing.

Debbie effing Gibson!?! That's so cool, I had no idea they did that. Thank you so much for featuring Greg! Way back in 1982 (I was 14) in my backass hometown in the Bible Belt I was scanning the FM dial and found the local college station which promptly put me to sleep, only to be startled awake sitting straight up in bed by a Circle Jerks song, probably Deny Everything. Djs must have changed over from boring to exciting, anyway it was my first time hearing hardcore and I couldn't go back to sleep because the dj was playing all kinds of fun stuff I don't remember but that was how I got into hardcore and Group Sex was the first hardcore album I bought, loved every second of it. Got to see them a couple of years later but my first hardcore show was Suicidal Tendencies.

I recently read Punk Paradox: A Memoir by Greg Graffin, in which he reflects on his experiences in the punk scene, particularly his relationship with Hetson and his sense of being an outsider. Graffin delves into the culture of his friends, many of whom engaged in drug use and frequented places like the Oki Dog. From the outset, Graffin makes it abundantly clear that he has always adhered to a straight-edge lifestyle. Additionally, he highlights that Mr. Brett had been sober for 26 years at the time, underscoring the contrast between their personal choices and the prevailing norms in the punk world. From my perspective, I believe the band may have handled the situation poorly by offering him a chance to get sober. However, it’s important to recognize that we’re only privy to one side of the story, and the complexities of their internal dynamics may be far more nuanced. That said, this situation reminds me of the ongoing saga between Metallica and Dave Mustaine-where personal conflicts, substance struggles, and the interplay of egos often cloud the true nature of the circumstances.

Love how his daughter gives her delivery like a nervous student standing in front of her class giving a book report that was written hastily during the bus ride to school the same morning. The fact that so many of the facts are (purposely) wrong just sells it even more. Love it 😂

@@ernestalcala4369not much shorter. They’re a 24 3/4” scale, as opposed to fender strats and teles having slightly over 25”. Not really enough to make a huge difference. Fender mustangs for example have a 24” scale. At that point you start to notice the difference
