Here we have yet another collection of games that either fall under the Resident Evil banner or at least try to mimic its survival horror style. Typically I like to represent a wide variety of game consoles and generation in these #ResidentEvil clone videos, but we're getting to the end of the list and that means mostly PS1 and PS2 games. Fun fact about Martian Gothic, it was originally supposed to be a point-n-click adventure before that changed mid production. I know there’s an interview somewhere with one of the developers explaining why things changed and made the gameplay obtuse.

I'm actually so sad you didn't like Haunting Ground. This game is some kind of masterpiece of the genre. Looking at the review you also stopped playing quite early. There are other enemies in the game with their own music, gimmics and environments. Hiding in the game is also much more permissive and varied compared to Clock Tower, since you can hide wherever you want, not just under a couch or something. No mentions also about the absence of loading screens in the whole game. It's quite a huge thing on its own. Don't quote me on that but I'm also pretty sure the game used the same engine as Resident Evil 4.

Yes! I wanted to comment about how Siren isn´t RE clone (more like Silent Hill clone) but every time it gets mentioned is a good time. And they deserve its own retrospective. It´s still very japanese-like, so who knows if Avalanche will ever do that. Still, Siren 2 is the best and not so hard as the first one.

I do hope you stick with Haunting Ground, Jared. The relationship between Fiona and Hewie is the game’s real focal point, and it does a damn good job of keeping you invested. And once you get comfortable using Hewie, you won’t feel like a non-combatant.

In Haunting Ground as you keep playing the tracks changes as you explore deeper within the castle and the grounds keeper is not the only stalker, later there are 3 more with their own themes. Also did you notice there isn't one single loading time since the begining after you load up the game. Great review but you should give it another go the more you explore the game the more it opens up and the real story unfolds and it is pretty intense and disturbing why Fiona is really there.

Haunting Ground is one of my all time favorites. Hands down the best graphics (and maybe even art direction) on PS2. Also, it didn't held back much when trying to tell a very mature and disturbing story. I honestly can't find any negative aspects on this game, but, of course, it's not for everyone. It was way ahead of its time... and sadly still trapped on the PS2.

Realize this is over a year late, but: In Haunting Ground, the idea was to show a developing bond between you and this dog you just met. You're meant to scold him if he continuously disobeys you, and pet him after he does what you ask of him. Though, I agree, Hewey not listening is a huge pain, especially since you're always being chased, and I can just see a situation where you're trying to get Hewey to grab a key item and he just refuses to do so until you're suddenly being chased again.

Siren is so underrated. Yes, it is bulky and unforgiving, but the tense atmosphere is so fascinating. Probably my favorite horror game of all time.

there is so much more to haunting grounds, hearing someone played for several hours but never got past the first enemy just sounds off. There are items that let you fight back too, you just have to play for more then ten minutes XD

Same director but Forbidden Siren is a vastly different beast to Silent Hill. Silent Hill had that elusive X factor that Siren does not. But I will say this, Forbidden Siren is a great game, the game mechanics are a bit all over the place, am actually busy playing the 2nd one at the moment and it's as frustrating but oddly entertaining as the first.

Yooo! I remember seeing Hard Edge on a EGM magazine back in 1998, and then I totally forgot about it, spent over a decade describing the game to people trying to learn the name of the game but nobody knew about it. In 2012 a friend gave me a modded ps1 and a bunch of backups, this was one of them

This series brought me to your channel and I'll be going through your other videos in the near future. Hearing how much you like the old prerendered backgrounds of PS1 era games makes me think I'll certainly feel right at home here. Forbidden Siren as it was known in Europe is still one of my favorite games despite me never actually finishing it. I always get stuck once the levels start looping and some other game just grabs my attention instead. But I absolutely love that game and its creepy face tech.

The Siren games are so unique. I had a lot of little complaints with Forbidden Siren, the first one, but Siren: Blood Curse fixed most of the issues I had and made it a much easier to enjoy experience. SBC makes the game feel more linear, too, and I feel like I had a better understanding of the story. Even if you've beaten Forbidden Siren, I highly recommend giving Blood Curse a try. I played it on PS3, and if you intend to do the same, you might want to grab it before they close the PS3 store on July 3rd, as physical copies are rare and expensive.

I did a little digging... the voice actress who portrayed Michelle in TRAG / Hard Edge is Lynn Eve Harris; she voiced Rebecca Chambers in the first Resident Evil. Burns Byford's VA is David Schaufele, who voiced Eddie in Silent Hill 2.

Thanks so much for doing these videos Avalanche! I didn't even knew half of these games existed and I definitely managed to snag a few new games up because of your videos on the subject matter. So far Ive gotten TRAG, Galerians, Galerians Ash, and Alone in the dark the new nightmare at some pretty reasonable prices! If it wasn't for you, I would have never known about these games, so thanks man! Also, a few games to note that fit in the same genre I guess I would mention would be Disaster report and Raw Danger. Its a very niche series but it definitely feels somewhat familiar to a RE clone.

Wow, Phil Soma. Talk about a game that went forgotten with time. Can't believe there's a sequel to it that sounds like the cast of Outlaw Star doing the voices, with the same composer (Kenji Kawai) doing the music.I remember reading about a game in PSM or some other magazine talking about recruiting a party at a mall before flying out and doing the schmup portion of the game. I thought it was Phil Soma, but as far as I recall, that game is only a shooter without RPG mechanics. Another great episode!

Hell yeah! Been keeping an eye out for this after the RE2 GC stream! Awesome content as usual dude. (Nice to see Haunting Ground mentioned too) I get what you mean in regards to Siren, how it feels like multiple levels because of the characters and jumping back and forth between missions. When I had first played it I hadn't given it much thought cause I was enamored with the sightjack mechanic; going back though it definitely feels incohesive at times. Still a great game though! :D
