Billy Martin, the only player to die sliding into home. Great video, totally enjoyed it. Having lived through the Billy/George days it brought back some great memories.

Very good you're correct Margret but for two years he was the best manager his calling card was his ability to immediately turn a team around once he did that it was time for Billy to move on

Legend has it that George Steinbrenner put in a revolving door leading to the manager's office in old Yankee Stadium. Billy used it a few times, along with Bob Lemon and a few others.

I love those Yankees teams from the late 1970s. I became a NYY fan during the 1996 playoffs. Easy to forget how they were heavy underdogs in the 1996 World Series. Some will love this, others hate it, but those Yankee teams from 1996-01 were probably the greatest team most of us will ever see. Especially the 1998-2000 run.

It’s wasn’t hard to zone in on the realization that the majority of Billy’s altercations took place in establishments that served alcohol.

Mickey Mantle and Billy were drinking buddies as players and the Yankees traded Billy in part just to get him away from their Star. Those two were bad influences on one another.
@mt3311
@mt3311 3 ай бұрын
Mantle was a bad influence on himself. He had a self destruct gene in him that compelled him to act like he did. Mantle was not anymore the pristine hero of the 1950's than Martin was. It was all about perception. This is not an indictment, but an observation. He was a hard fast liver, and they are some of my favorite people.

Martin and Reggie Jackson were very different from one another, and both need to be accountable for not getting along, however, with Martin, being so combative, and having had such a long and turbulent history, I put most of it on Billy, this is just my opinion.

If ever there was a person who was his own worst enemy, it was Billy Martin. For whatever reason, he never could conquer his demons. It took away from what otherwise was a brilliant baseball mind. It's unfortunate that his alcoholism was never properly dealt with by himself or any of the teams that he managed. I wonder if George Steinbrenner, in particular, ever made any real attempts to compel Billy to seek help for his self-destructive behavior.
