It is true, Eli, that modern life is full of unnecessary stress, waste and greed. The Maasai are living at peace with nature. Thanks for another great video!

A most astute observation starting at 21:21... it put a knot in my throat and an inkling of a tear in my 👁... take a look at a metropolis such as Detroit that is an urban ghost town after only little more half a century from the time when it was the world's center for automobile manufacturing, then compare it with the timeless rhythms of the Massai way of life... amazing video and sage reflections on the nature of being human beings...

I was in the Serengeti July 2022 and did tenting also. I saw the big five in one day! This was my tenth time to Africa (eastern and south countries). I love Africa! From the Serengeti, I went to the Masai Mara where I stayed in a camp owned and operated by the Masai. Fabulous!

@@playman1202 You cannot understand a culture without its cultural heritage and its history. In some parts of the world, people are reconnecting to the values of their ancestors. It is often their personal decision to lead a life away from western modernity. You may see it as a time capsule, but it is as real as our lifes. It all depends on the perspective. There's more than the "modern" ideas of the western progressives.
@tylerrobbins83112 жыл бұрын
@@jorgruthschilling Traditional Maasai culture doesn't and can't exist in modern africa. One they can't function as mercenary the way they use to, as well as sex slavery and trafficking is illegal. The Maasai are nice but much of what made them unique is illegal in our modern era.

Nice video. Unfortunately there are less and less wild animals. Visitors always visit the same Maasai villages, one or two. Other Maasai communities are closed to tourists. The Samburus are even more fascinating. I had the opportunity of spending some time in Kenya, visiting places that are not touristic. It was a fascinating experience but also it was very sad to be aware of the eminent extinction of the wild world.

Eli, you asked a very important question; "Should a developed society necessarily mean skyscrapers, modern apartments with convenience, capitalism, feminism and other so called progressive things?" My answer is, absolutely NOT, you just described a "controlled society". We are not meant to be controlled, nature is what we need more of. I love your channel, your videos and your enthusiasm for exploration of nature and other cultures. We are all one People, living on one land with different heritages. Keep up the great work!

That wooden stick was not longe argo a speer with wich the Maasai fight the lions and other dangerous animals. A very good account of this time is "Out of Africa". This is a memoir by the Danish author Karen Blixen. The book, first published in 1937, recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya, where she owned a coffee plantation in the last decades of the British Empire. Much of Blixen's energy in "Out of Africa" is spent trying to capture for the reader the character of the Africans who lived on or near her farm, and the efforts of European colonists (herself included) to co-exist with them. The movie "Out of Africa" made of Sydney Pollack in 1985 is beautiful, but has not much to do with Blixens story.

More of a sword staff rather than a spear, the Maasai are most famous for being renowned mercenaries though. Given that changed when guns became prevelent due to the Portuguese trading. It's crazy to think the Maasai were able to hold off the Ethiopian army for years without guns though.

@@svenbeowulfsson641 I wouldn't say you're to old to travel but much of africa is not safe to travel. Particularly for European women whom are targeted for sex trafficking and rape.
