Original title: Váimmustan lea biegga / Tuuli käy läpi sydämein
Nils-Aslak Valkeapää in memoriam, 2001. In Saami with Finnish translation.
Nils-Aslak Valkeapää was the central author of the Saami people, the defender and developer of the yoik-music. An artist who has been the key energy in giving Saami people back a belief in their culture. A belief that was close to be wiped out by the church and the ruling Scandinavian cultures.

Many thanks to you for posting this video! I am in the early learning stage of getting to know more about my ancestors and their way of life. Thanks to the efforts of others like yourself that is possible. This video gave me a deeper insight as to why my ancestors hid their heritage when they immigrated to the US and to how they lived then and now in Sámpi. I liked hearing the native language and was grateful to see the English translations. You've inspired me to read Nils-Aslak Valkeapää's books as well. I'm very grateful!

I am not saami, but I cried when I saw him singing yoik at the olympic game ceremony. God preserve their souls (and I am not christian either).

God is life. And that is what is being a Christian. Not trying to rule life, but accepting to be ruled by life. That's what Jesus showed us. It can't be forced on someone - here we heard how some rulers tried that. They gave bad name for God in people's ears. Not good for them who did so. But the rulers are not so often Christians. They love ruling more than God.

These wise people remind me of my connection to the Native Folk here in what the europeans call the U.S.A. I do not think the euro-people know there way Home or that it was never lost, what they lost was their Humanity & their Hearts

He was found dead in his bed near Helsinki, when he was returning from a trip to Japan, being only 58 years old. The diagnosis was not published (common practice in Europe, it's counted a privacy issue). Possibly, it was connected with a car accident 5 years earlier, from which he never fully recovered.

@@forgottenmusic1 thank you. In the interviews he talks a lot about dying. Like he knew it would happen soon. That's why I ask. Are you Sami ?

Nope, I just got to know his music (and later, some of his books as well). So, if you should have more detailed questions about his personality, or about the Sami culture in general, I am not the correct person to answer these unfortunately...

As well as I know, there is only 3 in English. "The Sun, My Father" is his main poem. Note that English or any other translation has only the poem itself, while the original Sami edition "Beaivi áhcázan" has a huge collection of old ethnographic photos included. "Trekways of the Wind" is his another poem translated. "Greetings from Lappland" is his view of Sami land, people, culture and situation back then when the book was written.

Christianity is a religion of Peace, and acceptance. Christ and his disciples never meant for it to be corrupted like it was. During the early days of Christianity you will find stories and histories of love and martyrdom practiced by Christ's people.

During the early days I find from history how early Christians murdered a "pagan" female philosopher and scientist Hypatia. So, it can be said that in fact Christianity became violent from the moment it got any power. In theory, Communism can be a nice fairytale too...

We know of this and despise the man who led the assault, but it really had more to do with the fact she was a woman, and less to do with religion.

Christianity almost destroyed the Sami culture when they started considering things like the poetry and singing depicted in this very video "sinful" and trying to force-convert them. Much like they successfully destroyed old Finnish paganism and culture.
