Well, it may not be consolation, but in reality, a Wendigo is just a cannibalistic man that looks disheveled and emaciated and deranged. The whole "Monster" Wendigo was made in comics and then video games. Check out the dark comedy RAVENOUS with Guy Pearce, it gives you a more accurate depiction of a Wendigo that is also scary, though as said, it's a very good dark comedy with lots of gore and blood.

It originated in several Native American Cultures either as a monster or a spirit that possesses a person in my Grandfathers culture it was a spirit that possessed. He told us stories about several things as children way before any comic book character so that's 1000% incorrect. The first record of it recorded 1st written mention of the wendigo appears in a 1636 report by Paul Le Jeune, a French Jesuit missionary living among the Algonquin people in what is now Quebec. Le Jeune described a woman who warns of an atchen that had eaten some tribal members nearby and that “would eat a great many more of them if he were not called elsewhere.” In Ojibwe, the term is defined as “a winter cannibal monster,” According to most Algonquian oral traditions, a windigo is a cannibalistic monster that preys on the weak and socially disconnected. In most versions of the legend, a human becomes a windigo after his or her spirit is corrupted by greed or weakened by extreme conditions, such as hunger and cold. In other legends, humans become windigos when possessed by a prowling spirit during a moment of weakness. Depending on the many First Nations that speak an Algonquian language, including the Abenaki, Siksika, Mi’kmaq, Algonquin, Ojibwe and Innu, the spelling and pronunciation of the word “windigo” differs. Wendigo, wheetigo, windikouk, wi’ntsigo, wi’tigo and wittikka are all alternative versions of the same term. Other names, such as atchen, chenoo and kewok, are also commonly used to refer to the windigo. Just as there are different versions of the word “windigo,” there are many variations on the creature’s appearance and powers. Sometimes, windigos are described as exceptionally thin, with the skull and skeleton pushing through its ash-coloured, mummy-like skin. Other stories describe the windigo as a well-fleshed giant who gets proportionately larger the more it eats. According to other legends, the windigo has pointed or animal-like ears with antlers or horns sprouting on its head. A windigo’s eyes have been described as sunken or glowing like hot coals. Sharp and pointy teeth, extremely bad breath and body odour are also often traits of a windigo. The windigo is usually, but not always, endowed with powers, such as superhuman strength and stamina that allow it to stalk, overpower and devour its victims. Windigos are usually credited with exceptional eyesight, hearing and sense of smell. They are said to move with the speed of the wind and have the ability to walk across deep snow or even over open water without sinking.

There have been several films using Windigo, and I seek them out. I love the story of a giant presence that represents hunger and the lethality of winter in the woods, hunting those who feed on others (literally and I think figuratively, too), who's screams can make men go mad. I look forward to seeing this one.

@@aitnobetafaq Ravenous 1999 by Antonia Bird film is good, Robert Carlyle and, Guy Pierce are great, and it leans into the curse. Larry Fessenden's 2001 film Wendigo is not perfect, but I like the unseen darkness. I would rather not have a giant monster with a tiny budget.

I recognize the actor who plays the sheriff. I saw him in the 1992 Stephen King movie adaptation, "Sleepwalkers". In that movie he was monster shape-shifter. His actual appearance was that of a large, bipedal, hairless, feline-looking creature.

Why can't we have a movie about a Wendigo and it actually look like the legends. Yeah I get big scary monster is scary, and looks "imposing" and "grotesque" but it's just so...... meh, at this point If a monster looks more human, but it can be seen something isn't right with it, that something is majorly off, then that is true horror. You want to associate it with a human, but something is telling you it's not human. Giving you that proper mindfuck, and even make you hesitate to do what is needed, and underestimate in some cases the danger which the creature poses. Horror works, when it's done in a way to make it feel like it can be real, reason old school tricks with puppets worked, and not CGI, yes this monster looked more man made, but it still did not look like it could be real.

Where are people getting the antler on a wendigo aspect from? Because the Algonquins did not describe them as having antlers. Matter of fact going by their descriptions the wendigos look like those wendigos off of that video game until dawn.

Ummm yes they actually did. Paul Le Jeunes book from his travels in the 1600s is the very first time the wendigo was written in description and the Algonquin clearly state antlers. I have no idea why people are using Google as a reference and video games when a literal book says otherwise.

Possibly even a skin walker taking the form of a deer but wendigos don't have antlers I've looked up and done a plethora of research on these things which aren't even really called wendigos by the way the Algonquins have a name for them in their native language but they won't tell anyone what that is because they believe that saying it's name brings it to you, however, in the plethora of research that I've done on the Algonquin legend of the wendigos no antlers were not apart of their physical description. Their described as being very tall and very thin with their skin appearing like it's been stretched over their bones, they have very sharp pointed teeth, sometimes they have a little bit of head hair however, other descriptions say they have no hair, their skin can range from white, grey, or even more black but the gray skin seems to be the most prominent and they are essentially genderless once turned into a wendigo. They are both bipedal as well as move on all fours and the Algonquins say that they tend to pose as children crying for help but that their voices sound very distorted and not really natural if you actually pay close attention. They're also intelligent and capable of problem solving skills on a human level. And lastly they of course have claws and no lips because they can't resist the urge to chew them off.

Either way, and though the Wendigo has zero connection to a Golem or Pumpkinhead, this movie seems to be using both elements. But still, the Pumpkinhead has zero connection to the Golem mythology. The Pumpkinhead was inspired by a poem of Ed Justin's back in something like 1982.

Wished it actually looked like a Wendigo/Windigo instead of some goatman or leshey, but eh... mid design lovers be eating good with this one i guess XP. The genuine article looks more interesting, more like a straight up vampire/dracula with being a gaunt grey humanoid with sunken eyes and bones pulled taunt, if you wanna give animal features to a wendigo other than just primate at least go with an owl, an animal actually said to be associated with it!

Read or listen to any skinwalker story theyer so scary why cant a director get it right ? You put the protagonist in a cabin and then you splay the senses like the sound of a thousand hands knocking on every wall or tracks in the snow that turn from human to deer keep the pow wow out and just insinuate the native lore with close ups of a turning dream catcher in the window. Or the old native guy from town stares you down in fear. Cg a deers skin falling off and jaw dropping into the snow make it cackle like a hyena and kidnapp the little boy drag the protag through a "saw" plot made of scary hoots and possess the middle aged secondary with a joker grin find the boy ...make the boy smell like the dead do somthin messed up like affraid to bathe and eat the cat cg boys face falling off and hiding deer head shaped like a human get hunted while raceing back to the spot where the boy was found crawl into the dark rabbit hole full of tree roots and bones find the real boy who is now half animal and dieing drag him from hole with the skinwalkers gross face quickly in chase flood the rabbit hole with blood birth the protag and high pressure blood to reveal the real boy is already an animal who cant die and boo hoo you have to leave himin the woods where he grows up and followz u to the city for skinwalkwr 2.
