I went through a similar process back during the wait for Feast, tried to avoid all spoilers, but the wait was too long and I caved. Now I embrace all spoilers, and take heart knowing that we've been spoiled on less than 10% of the book, and what we've been spoiled on is pretty low on the surprise factor, which is how it tends to go. GRRM avoids giving us the truly big spoilers during the wait.

9:35 I think the "corpse stood on the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly" refers to Jon Connington, either right after meeting the stone men and becoming infected with the grey death, or sailing on to Westeros with Aegon and the Colden Company. He is truly a dead man walking, and the grey evokes the grey death that ails him.
@christiankrueger221
@christiankrueger221 9 жыл бұрын
Christian Krueger I see these guys mentioned Jon Connington as well, but I would put my money on him. Especially since you're only disqualification for Connington is that he has already landed at westeros whereas Victarion is still en route on his ship, however that is about to change. And this vision is from the house of the undying and so it doesn't have to refer to the present, which is already past if you think about it...
@HistoryofWesteros

Christian Krueger Yeah I've come around a bit on this. I do think it's more likely Jon Connington these days, but Vic does remain possible.

Excellent work! You mentioned a few times that dragons are the real wildcards here and that is a very good point. I think there are a few parallels here with the battle of ice. Let me know if you agree: 1. Key characters are out of action (Dany and Jon) 2. Many other tier2 characters if you will, are at play, Victarion/Euron - Stannis/Davos, Red priests, fragmented lesser houses, tribes, companies etc with undecided/shaky loyalties. 3. Most important I think are wildcards, Dragons and Others. Although its not mentioned anywhere but I get a sense from reading whats available that Others are present in close vicinity of winterfell much like Dragons at Mereen. These may be the battles where ice and fire finally make their big appearance and play a decisive roles in the outcomes of these battles either for better or worse. The exact outcomes are of course difficult to predict.

Jon Connington 100% fits the corpse at the prow of a ship smiling sadly. He's a corpse since he has greyscale. The smiling sadly fits with his POVs. He's constantly reminiscing about Rhaegar and his failures. If you can't imagine JC "smiling sadly," how do you see Victarion as "smiling sadly?" Has he once smiled in any of his POVs? You note yourselves that Victarion doesn't laugh. JC only smiles about Aegon thinking that he's doing right by Rhaegar.
@timjurie2769
@timjurie2769 10 жыл бұрын
I don't think it has to do with anything literal like smiling, I think it is referring to the name 'Greyjoy' as in 'Grey' + 'joy' a sad type of happiness.

@18:45 - "your death is with us now" is an echo of Maegi the Frog's words to Cersei's friend Heather. But it's possible that Moqorro means the hand will kill him IF he doesn't let Dr. Moqorro treat it instead of Dusky & The Maester. (it's sad to relisten to this 3 years later and hear your youthful enthusiasm about how awesome it will be when the show portrays the Battle of Fire - not yet realizing that the battles of Ice and Fire and all their strategies and attendant mysteries would be struck from the show)

I've always found the books so wonderfully descriptive and nuanced that a single event or character death wouldn't diminish my appreciation of the material, for the most part; it's all so good. Also, this podcast is comprehensive analysis of the books-- if a person is not up-to-speed on what's been published or interested in what's to come, frankly they shouldn't be watching these videos, in my opinion.

Tobiemoss Yeah I think that Hardhome was the first large scale battle that they truly did right, even though it was only 20 minutes long and wasn't in the books. I think that they need to incorporate more story telling and perspective if they can't achieve the scale they want in these battles, sometimes that can be just as good.

This is great to know. We've had a lot of people express interest in more spoilery episodes, but mainly, when GoT is in the off season it just seems to make more sense to focus on the books themselves. We will definitely be doing more spoiler-free episodes when Game of Thrones returns, and likely a few in between...well, the history within might be spoilery, but that's typically the case!

Probably a little late with the comment but that Gorkhaz character you were talking about who supposedly was the supreme commander of the Yunkaii is one of the "clancker lords"described in Quentin's chapters in dance. In those chapters and in Tyrion's we see a little of how they rotated command in between these "lords".

There is so much to miss, that's what we're here for! the old woman with the dreams we see with the BwB/Arya says "I dreamt of a man without a face, waiting on a bridge that swayed and swung. On his shoulder perched a drowned crow with seaweed hanging from his wings." Man without a face = faceless man and Balon "fell" from a rope bridge. Drowned crow = Euron Crow's Eye. Also Euron showed up the very day after Balon's death, which strongly indicates he knew it was coming.

We had that wrong, we were saying 50 million when we should have been saying 15 million. It's pretty high up there, but the pilot of Boardwalk Empire is one that trumps it for sure, as it was around 20 million.

We just did. It is an excellent piece, concise and to the point. Good chance he's right. Something felt wrong about it being Hizdahr being the poisoner because it was so sloppy but I never took the time to dig deep on that particular aspect of it. We're certainly aware the Shavepate has his own agenda, it's just that many of his goals align with Dany's. But not all.

Thank you for covering this topic. I was troubled by the Victorian Chapter when I read it, but was not sure why. I did go back and read it again and realized that it started telling the story w/o it being from his point of view. It struck me as an error, because GRRM believes in the unreliable narrator, which is why we have POV Characters. No other POV Chapter ever behaves that way. Wouldn't GRRM stop Victorian's POV Chapter if we are getting third person narration? The fact that GRRM keeps the story as part of Victorian's POV must mean that it is Vic's POV, whether a vision or whether he had an out of body experience, like some who died or who has warged. I did not tie it to the Prophecy from the Undying- GREAT CATCH! I think you nailed it. Also, note that when the undying describe Rhaegar's sigil- they refer to the Dragon as a "Stallion." This may tie in w/the Dothraki prophecy of the Stallion who Mounts the World, meaning Drogon: the "Stallion" who will mount the world.
@sharadowasdr
@sharadowasdr 5 жыл бұрын
I am reminded of how the Native Americans called horses 'dogs' because they could not think of what else to make of this new creature. In the context of Dothraki culture the dragon could be another kind of 'stallion' .

Pilot episodes tend to cost a lot since they are the start of production. In that, those pilot episode numbers are inflated unless they never make more than that first episode (which does happen, look at WONDER WOMAN which reportedly cost over $10 million and was never even finished).

It wounds me that this was posted 6 years ago and the book still isn’t out.

Wow, I had no idea. I imagine Rome's pilot was expensive as well. Imagine using all those costumes and sets just once. If I was making a show I might consider building it around some failed show whose "stuff" I could recycle, hah.

Damn I haven't been on here in a while, but it seems that The Winds of Winter is going to be Epic if it contains 6 battles

Man, I love these podcasts but I would love if ya'll make more spoiler-free ones because I'm not caught up entirely and I would like to see videos that do not spoil everything. /:

I have a feeling Ser Loras 122:45 is in much better condition then he's rumored to be.

At about 1:17:24 you mention Brown Ben flipping sides probably wasn't one of the three treasons, where a lot of people are claiming it was the one for gold. To back you up, in ADWD Ben returns to Meereen after switching sides. He has a conversation with Dany where he talks about how gold has nothing to do with his turncloak attitude, as "silver's sweet and gold's our mother, but once you're dead they're worth less than that last shit you take as you lie dying." - He obviously could be lying but his speel strikes me, personally, as genuine

That's a good catch, I hadn't connected his earlier speech to the notion of his betrayal. We're under the impression that the 3 betrayals will all be rather spectacular, and obvious. The Khal's death combined with Rhaego's "stillbirth" seems spectacular enough, but I don't think the other two have happened yet.

Mormont was the treason for gold. Mazdur was for blood. Just speculation but I think The Treason for love is Hizdahr... the Harpy very possibly has someone he loves and needed to install someone has a puppet and have them poison Dany.

Mormont didn't betray Dany for gold, he did it so that he could be pardoned for his crimes and go back to Westeros

And you should read up on some theories about how Hizdahr didn't actually betray Dany at all. Especially if you think he was the one who poisoned the locusts.

part of GRRM's interest in that relationship may stem from the time he spent writing for the show Beauty and the Beast. That parallel needs no explanation!

Yeah. I've been reading this series since my girlfriend came back from England in 1999 and brought home A Game of Thrones for my birthday. It all really fell into place since A Clash of Kings came out the fallowing month (US), so it gave me time to read the book twice before I read A Clash of Kings. I didn't have to worry about spoilers back then since no one I knew read the series, but now with the show, everyone I know is at least watching the show, and people keep trying to spoil me.
