As one commenter on my poll said, “The winner took it all!”, so here it is - “The Winner Takes It All” by ABBA off of their album, “Super Trouper” which came out in 1980 and featured the incredible Rutger Gunnarsson on bass. (edit: I just learned that it was Mike Watson who played bass on this song, could've fooled me)
This song won out by a non-wavering 70/30 split. Maybe I should have specified that both songs in the poll were by ABBA, as I’m sure that more than one person thought that “One of Us” was the Joan Osbourne tune, but every vote counts…no electoral college here. Both ABBA tunes have, in my opinion, great bass-lines and neither were easy to learn, but “One of Us” was a bit of a bear and I look forward to uploading it at some point in the near future.
What can I say, ABBA wrote some great tunes and this one was no exception. I think their arrangements, melodies, background vocals, and orchestrations are incredibly sophisticated for, what was considered to be, “Pop Music”.
I didn’t have anything in mind to write about, so I’ll just do a “stream of consciousness” thing.
00:21 - I wish that higher note would have come out stronger, but the only way I could reliably get both notes to ring out was by lightly plucking the string from beneath/below with my middle finger. For some reason, when I played it normally, I would often wind up muting the lower note. Playing it this way had its perils as well - too hard and it would sound like a slap bass-line. Too soft and it would sound weak. I went weak on this take.
00:39 - Not sure what this smile was bout, I’ll chalk it up to things looking up in the storyline and my mood being affected by the lyrics.
00:48 - This fill was so intense that I tried eating my face from the inside out. In all seriousness, Rutger’s playing has such a spontaneity to it that I find incredibly difficult to transcribe. To me, he seems to just float around the neck, dropping his fingers and hitting notes at random, but all the notes he lands on are the perfect ones. It really took an immense amount of concentration my part to play that with any sort of “smoothness” and I can only imagine what it must be like to play with such ease.
01:06 - This little fill took a surprisingly long time to get down.
01:37 - Another variation of the fill at 00:48. I knew that both the notes that slid down were different, but I really had a hard time distinguishing exactly what they were. It might have been a combination of his tone being a bit “bassy” along with his “loose and fluid” manner of playing. Notice how he slides down, then back up and then down again. Obviously please with myself, I smile again.
01:56 - I love the the way the feel of the song changes at this point. It has a “military” feel to me as the lyrics take a more serious tone and the melody reaches higher, intensified by the background vocals and orchestrations.
02:38 - The stupid.
02:58 - That voice!
03:42 - I thought the slide here was a very nice touch.
03:59 - I play, unaccompanied, through a verse and chorus.
Remember my friend Mark who passed away suddenly last month? Lynn and I took his two cats into our home. We had a visit today from CPS (Cat Protective Services) to do a wellness check. The caseworkers were Mark’s Daughter, Rhapsody, and his two Granddaughters, Sophia and Genevieve, along with Mark’s Sister, Angela. They’d never met the kitten, Paris, but they knew Gabby well and she was as happy to see them as they were to see her. There were some tears and lots of pictures taken and then the girls were off to find some of our other cats who were hiding throughout the house. We ended the visit with a nice lunch on the Newburgh Waterfront where we told the girls that Gabby was their cat and we were just taking care of her for them and that they could visit with her or ask for pictures anytime they wanted.
I'm playing the Guild B-301(formerly 302)A. It's been fitted with a Babicz 3 Point Replacement Bridge and a Zero-Mod Thumb-Rest.

So, not only did I nearly choke to death from laughing so hard, but I also had to spend the rest of the song (which I went back and re-watched) cleaning off my screen. You have made a lovely job of this challenging bass line my good man! ABBA were an incredible band and their bass lines were an essential if under-appreciated aspect of this. both Mike Watson (from my home town) and Rutger Gunnarson are absolute beasts of bass guitar playing. I could listen to their work every day and indeed teach their lines to many of my bass pupils.

Great choice, Bass line. and melodic structure to this song. One of the most painful lines ever delivered ",... and I understand, you've come to shake my hand". (Ugh!,.. a real gut punch) Then in the next chorus she just lets the lines ring out furiously, "The Winner Takes it AAAAAAALLLLLLLL!,..." The 2 women in ABBA (Agnetha and Anni) were 2 of the most underrated singers in Pop/Rock history. They hit every nuance and dynamic perfectly. Amazing considering they were Swedish!

Thank you and, I agree. True. At first I thought you were suggesting that the lyric was poorly written or cringeworthy and I was going to disagree with you. But, after rereading your comment, I don't believe that was what you meant. ABBA is one of those bands that, when I'm learning and playing their songs, I often get "moved" by a musical part, a lyric, or a melody. It's one of the reasons I enjoy them so much. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave such a great comment Sam.

@@TJH3113 - You heard me right. I was not being ironic. That moment of the song, and that lyric - about a former lover who has now "come to shake her hand", and just "be friends" after a long battle is so sad. Especially with the dynamic at that point. The song is at its quietest moment and her voice cracks with vulnerability when she delivers the line,.. "You've come to shake my hand",.. then continues.. "I apologize if it makes you feel sad, Seeing me so tense, no self-confidence",.. (then speaks quietly) "but you see" - then furiously belts out that "The Winner Takes it AAAAAAALLLLLLLL!,..." -- in frustration .. like a great purging.. 2 times .. then that great arrangement with Piano and background vocals kicks in and drives it home. Just incredible songwriting and production. Sometimes I just listen to that ending over and over again. Most people do not realize how painful most ABBA songs were. Except for Dancing Queen, most of the other hits were at least tinged with a lot of sadness and longing. "S.O.S." and "Fernando" (great Bass line in that one too) come to mind as well. I re-discovered them about 20 years ago after a painful breakup. I heard "Knowing Me Knowing You" on the radio. There is another one. Real haunting. These songs capture the pain of a breakup so well it is incredible. Maybe the best songs ever - at capturing that sad feeling - sad for you, sad for them, frustrated, wanting to still fight but ready to give up.. UGH! As always, thanks for the great work and I appreciate how engaged you are with commenters. As someone who also makes a lot of videos I am not always so engaged! LOL.

I remember getting the "@&%£" taken out of me when i was younger because i liked what ABBA produced.... almost everyone else was of the mind that if it wasn't 320 bpm thrash or "top group" rock then it wasn't "real" music. I am, and always have been, more interested in the musical composition of a track ... not just who it's by because i "have" to like a certain genre .... i think you fall into the same category Troy .. of which i can say i'm pretty happy about because we get a varied range of genre here on your channel ... if it was all one thing then i would have hit the unsubscribe button a while back. So, as always, you pull out another classic and do it justice ... and what more could we want but a great musical score, a fantastic voice and a couple of minutes solely of that Guild. Nice job Mate. As an aside, you mention a military feel to bits of this track .... i noticed there was a certain "marching, military, percussive" theme to a few of their tracks when they released them .... waterloo, fernando to name the obvious .. Glad it went well with the visit, that was a nice touch telling the youngsters that you were looking after their cat ... it'll mean a lot to them i think.

Unfortunately, I wholly dismissed them when I was young and naive. I've gained a much greater appreciation for them, so better late than never, I guess. You are right, I'm definitely more of a "song" person than a "group" person. Rush, of course, was "my" band and I was, for the most part, blindly loyal to most everything they put out. Most everything else I like is on a "per song" basis. I'm glad you enjoyed the cover and the extended play-along. That usually happens when I find the bass-line particularly interesting and don't want the song to end. I'm glad I'm not alone in picking up the "military" element in the song. Thanks again for the great comment.

I know Mark would have done it for us...maybe not all 5, but he'd have certainly done whatever he could have. Rhapsody just cannot have a pet where she lives right now. If that changes, she'd be welcome to take Gabby. Gabby's doing fine but I think she'd be happier as an "only" cat. I only took a couple of pictures as I didn't want to intrude on their moment. Thanks for the reply, Troy! I love the work of Bob Daisley on this record, “Bark at the Moon”. Precise, clean and very creative. “Slow Down” is my favorite song. I’m crazy about learning how to play it, so I think I’ll have a chance by watching you playing it! :-) “Waiting for Darkness” is another fabulous track. Amazing atmosphere and, besides relatively simple, it has a hypnotic bass line.

I remember in my youth (I'm the wrong side of 60) that ABBA were a joke to 'serious' music fans like me. They weren't though, were they? Otherwise the better part of 45 years later we wouldn't be marveling at Troy's shit hot version of the wonderful bass lines. Dancing Queen was awesome too as Troy showed. How many more ace Nordic bass lines lurk in the ABBA back catalogue? I know Troy doesn't do requests but... He does, I'm sure, investigate some of the suggestions. I don't know whether 'Blur' were popular on your side of the pond but I think 'For Tomorrow' would be worth a listen to?

Yay more disco. You are so amazing. The more I watch, the more i enjoy. Being dyslectic, I rarely read the synopsis, but I've been trying to take the time to do so on yours. Loved the breakdown of what was going on at what time in the song. Also being a parent to only animals, I think what you did for your friends orphans is awesome. Hope someone steps up when I go. Also being dyslectic it takes me a long time to comment like this. But just wanted to say, you are appreciated.

I love your channel, but I have to speak up and say that as amazing as Rutger Gunnarsson's playing was, he didn't do the bass track, it was Mike Watson. Watson also played on SOS, Mamma Mia, and Super Trouper. I think he's more percussive of a player and it's fun to listen to the differences in their playing styles. Both played with such finesse.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes, I addressed that issue very shortly after I uploaded the video. I didn't change my original post, just added a disclaimer along with it. I knew ABBA had a couple of different bassists, but assumed, because of the complexity of this bass-line that it was Gunnar. I was equally surprised to learn that Watson played on Super Trouper, which was a real challenge. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Paige.

This may sound strange coming from a bass player but I never really knew who Rutger Gunarrson was until recently. Now I see why. Sure, I was too cool as a kid to like ABBA. They're one of those artists that you appreciate later as your musical tastes become more sophisticated. But that isn't it. If you watch this video, it's like 'Wow, that guy was creative'. This video really shows that. But if you listen to the actual recordings, they mix the piano and the vocals way up and you can't hear the bass. They call him the 'European Jamerson.' That may be an exaggeration - Jamerson was a beast, this guy was 'just' really good - but the Motown records mixed the bass way up. Those slides that Troy does in the beginning of this song - on the original recording, you can't even hear it. It's a shame that such a great player got short shrift in favor of lush pianos and sexy female vocals. It is possible, ABBA, to do both. Not sure if you knew that. Obviously, you didn't. What a waste of a great player. Those songs/records would've been much better if they hadn't tried to be the Top 40 version of Liberace and instead, turned the bass up where you can actually hear it. Shame on them.
