I once heard a professor say, "You could write a 100 solid peer reviewed papers that practically no one reads and no one cares about, but write one where you faked the numbers or the science, and everyone will read that one and everyone will know your name and everything you've done will be called into question."

The Ariely situation I find most interesting is one that was mostly reported in the Israeli press. It was about a study that claimed to prove that expensive placebos work better (actually that discount placebos work worse), but it was discovered that Ariely never got ethics review board permission to give people painful electric shocks. He was suspended from MIT when it was brought to light, which is why he moved to Duke. But the data is also extremely suspect - they claimed to get placebo effects ten to thirty times larger than similar (presumably real) studies get, suggesting the entire study was based on falsified data. But that one hasn't even been retracted. It's interesting to me that "little" frauds - like plagiarism or not getting IRB approval - are frequently a tell for more extreme forms of fraud. Given the number of times he has been caught lying I think it's valid to assume all his claims are false unless you have good evidence to the contrary, rather than given him or similar Nudgelords the benefit of the doubt. It was all fake and we need to start over again.

From what I can tell, from your first week of undergrad until your final thesis defence, academia is formulated in such a way that you are striving ardently towards the truth (often in total isolation from your supervisors) to obtain credentials which allow you to lie fantastically.

Great essay! What do you think of Season 5 in general? I always thought it to be the worst by far, because characters like Gus and the young female journalist are only seen as honest and good, while every other major character in the show had some dark sides to themselves. Seemed to me like David Simon wanted to give a middle finger to the industry he used to work in.
@davescripted37962 ай бұрын
Really?? I loved season five. I understand what you're saying, maybe it laid it on a little thick with money vs truth but as a story and social commentary I thought it worked great. I don't think the show had any bad seasons.

can you do a video on the getaway? Dexter season 4 epsiode 12
@davescripted3796 Жыл бұрын
A lot of people have told me I was too dismissive of season four and I suppose I was. I loved seasons two and seven because Dexter's main enemy wasn't another serial killer which trapped him in these moral dilemmas. But season four was still excellent in its own right. Trinity was the best of the serial killer opponents and the finale was a masterpiece. I totally blamed Dexter for Rita's death because he could have prevented it. Definitely worthy of its own video but I don't think I have the energy to make it. Sorry. This article from Den of Geek sums it up better than I could. Take care www.denofgeek.com/tv/dexter-season-4-episode-12-review-season-finale/

Uh, yeah, sure. The Wire did not predict the thing that was already happening whether it was drugs, corruption, or general dishonesty. Another newsflash: most of what is called prophecy by the so-called prophets in the Bible is a dramatic retelling.

Did you play back the interlaced video segments of The Wire at a slow speed or something? Everything looking off is a little jarring for the story you're trying to say.

I did. I was hoping no one noticed lol. Because of all the copywrite software it's hard to screen record so I had to finagle a bit while I tried to figure things out.

In case you haven't seen The Wire this video is only about season 5 and it is generally considered the worst of the show. And now you might be thinking that the season sounded interesting and good. You are not wrong, season 5 is amazing, yet rest of the series is just better. That's how good show it really is.

There have been many issues with fraud in sociology and psychology. Please don’t assume anyone is actually even doing their studies until there are multiple studies done by multiple people. Plus in science peer reviewed is massively important.

Also don't assume the paper has properly accounted for contributing factors I lost a lot of trust in veterinary care when I looked into the effects of economic struggle on dog behavior/health .. and lack of accounting for that in a lot of behavior/health studies on sterilization despite sterilization costing money.

As a dood who became the number one source of James Somerton salt in his friendship circles, I noticed a lot of shocking parallels. You've got a dood who, as you put it, makes stuff up for the sake of attention. Who always has the "perfect" fact supporting his inflammatory bullshit, hidden somewhere up his ass. Who "Cares more about attention than he does getting the truth," and coincidentally gets a lot of money for that. Am I talking about a disgraced video essayist or Templeton? Yes. I think a lot of the hatred for this kinda dood comes from the sense that... it's not like this guy betrayed us _personally,_ it's that his existence represents a fundamental kind of betrayal.

It makes ZERO sense that Templeton is scared in that scene, unless you believe journalists are honest to a degree they never have been IRL. A real version of that would have templeton instantly report on the cops faking a serial killing, his own lies would be brushed under the rug and his new story would propel him to more fame. That's the sort of thing Boris Johnson did to eventually become PM! In general, the wire sucks because it's story only "works" if we accept institutions (that the author happened to work in, so is biased to defend) are 100 times more honest than they really are. It presents itself as gritty and real but is idealistic to a silly extent. Ariely is still a massively respected well paid researcher even after he was exposed btw, it basically did nothing to hurt him. That's proof of what I'm saying.
