Make this beautiful pendant! Easy, beginning soldering using wire shapes. Learn easy-to-make wire shapes in this video as well as in my other wire-working videos, Wire-Working Basics and Wire-Working Intermediate Shapes!
Learn additional wire shapes like "the open question mark spiral" as well as soldering instruction, forming metal and how to finish your wire pendant. Learn a little-known method for hiding silver solder on your piece! But wait, there's more!!! Learn how to drill a pearl and how to apply a liver of sulfur patina to your finished piece! Did I mention soldering??? And more soldering???
I used 18 gauge, round, copper wire to make this pendant but, it can be made from a variety of wire gauges - from 18 - 12 gauge - and from a variety of metals like brass, bronze, nickel, steel, silver, sterling, gold. (Note: the copper plating trick won't work on any metals but copper!).
Don't miss "Wire-Working, Intermediate Shapes - Bails and Links. Video 3 in the Wire-Working Series" coming up next (in a few minutes kind of next!). • Wire-Working, Interme...

Just a note to say how much I appreciate your tutorials & humor! I’m not into making jewelry, but I do some model building and the techniques you demonstrate are infinitely useful in my efforts! Thanks for spending the enormous amount of time and effort to produce these excellent videos!

I always enjoy watching you work AND listening to your humorous delivery! It’s been many (many) years since I sat at a jeweler’s bench AND am sooo not getting back into gold and silver work again (well…maybe silver, later), but decided to do copper wire projects, so have different sizes of copper wire, just waiting their turn to be mangled at my hand! LOL Not wanting to trust my old torch setup since I don’t know how long torch hoses last in storage, I decided to use a kitchen torch. Gghhrr! I couldn’t get enough heat to melt the solder, but I could only find gold solder in my tool box from WAY back when. I think it was medium or easy, not hard (too lazy to go out to workroom to check), but I’ve checked online, looking for actual copper solder…mainly to match the wire. Do anyone not make actual copper solder? What kind of solder do you generally use on copper wire pieces? I figured gold would blend better than silver, but it was a moot point, considering that I couldn’t get enough heat to melt the solder! Metal work definitely does NOT fit the old adage about “like riding a bike”. LOL

rofl i hate to say it but i love it when you lose things on the floor or turn around going "have i lost that pearl?...where the he.....ck is that stone??" not cos i like to watch people struggle but because i thought it was only me......i TOO have a floor monster that eats dropped stones, wires, and various other items, which vanish when they land down there.....and ive got a plain laminate floor so theres nowhere for em to go, but go they do!! i too will have a stone in my hand, put it down to find the right drill bit or the calipers, and then have to spend half an hour looking for it cos i have NO idea where i put it. its nice to know that even so, its possible to put out good work lol

So awesome, is there a way to turn it gold or silver, or do you have to start out with precious metal.🥰

Interesting to watch. Not that a guy is gonna make ladies jewelry but it does give a guy a heads up to the process and how to spot quality jewelry of this type. In your other video you showed how to make loops. Everyone shows how to make loops but how to make small squares and rectangles without having to bend all the points You can wrap on a pen for loops sure but no one shows how to make squares without having to make them ourselves. I was looking all over the place and couldnt find anything square or rectangluar in a smaller size. Now that Im thinking about it maybe Dice. But it would be nice to have several of a type of object of varying sizes going to down the list the only thing I can think of is id have to make it myself.

Is there some reason that you do not use a "jig" to make your swirls? Seems that would make 2 alike easier. Love Love Love the design you made. Swirls are my favorite to doodle, and your result is elegant!

I'm surprised the pearl survived...may I ask why you didn't wait to put it on when you were finished?

I was thinking the same thing. Pearl’s are delicate and chemicals can’t be good for them .

As always, great info and terrific camera work! I enjoy working with copper and started out doing wire work, then moved into more traditional jewelry work. I've been trying to find copper solder vs. silver solder, in search of a better color match. So far, most of the copper solder I've tried is very brittle and doesn't make a strong join. Can you recommend a good source for copper solder?

I noticed a lot of people using wires, use ded soft.... why ??? I can't do that maybe for earnings. But I like medium or semi hard wire.
@catzkeet4860

It's because it's next to impossible to get a wire to stay in position if it's hard or half hard. Both of those states mean that the wire retains a memory of its shape and does its best to retain that shape. It's VERY hard to solder something if it keeps trying to spring apart. Also if yo DO manage to get hard or half hard to retain a shape, if you solder it, the wire will anneal and relax and the shape will shift. It's also impossible to get half hard or hard to make a smooth curve for the same reasons. Yes you can anneal it but why bother.... skip a step and start with soft wire that you can work harden when done.
