I love the irony that all the false accusations of her being a witch eventually drive the girl to actually become a witch
@andreeaandronic13613 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Not really. She has the pact with the devil because she has no other choice. She can't survive in the wilderness and she can't go to a nearby village as they would kill her(as she'd be suspected a witch who murdered her entire familyandno one would believe her). I don't think it's something like: "You wanted to see a witch? Look at me now, mom!". It's the only way she can survive.
@andreeaandronic13613 жыл бұрын
And I also think it was all planned, as they were all vulnerable in the wilderness and lost in their faith. The masculine characters were of no need to the devil, the baby was ointment for brooms to make them fly and the women in the family were supposed to be alive to become witches. Her mother would have eventually become a witch herself, if Thomasin didn't kill her. But in the end, the last women left alive were to fall into despair and become witches.
@Cangeltibon3 жыл бұрын
Not just false accusations is the lack of autonomy, remember the dad selling the cup, nearly everyone but her contributed to her descent and the only thing she did at the very end was accept it. The baby was taken, the cup was sold turning her mother already grieving mother against her, then the brother is taken, cursed, and dies confirming their was witch, the father never communicating or admitting to being wrong keeps trying to take control and patch thing up, so his wife 2 children down and highly suspicious of one understandably loses touch with reality, desperate and not knowing which girl is the witch he locks them all away, we never see the twins after that, dad get taken out by Phil, and mom tries to kill her and she’s kills mom in self defense, with no where left to go her only choice in the entire movie was to live or die.

That's true. However, for most of the movie, he's probably the most reprovable character. He steals his wife's cup to trade for supplies and takes a long time to confess even after his daughter is blamed for it. He can't admit the bleakness of their food situation; he and Caleb have to go hunting, but lie to Katherine about it so she won't worry. Chopping firewood is the only thing he can do well to provide for his family. Overall, he's still sympathetic because we sense his vulnerability, and his unwillingness to face his own sins and shortcomings. He wants to be seen (by himself as well as his wife) as a good Christian and a strong "man of the family," but he's actually weak and dishonest. During his last night on Earth, he finally breaks down and confesses all the sins he's been trying to excuse and dismiss, offering himself to God in exchange for his children's salvation. A great character: mightily flawed, but still good at heart.

@@colinbaldwin313it is interesting how this whole movie is a tragedy of Williams making. I think the worst is that we see witches. I think the movie would have been better if we were left wondering what really caused all of this. It would have been a far more progressive movie if Caleb and Thomasin hadnt interacted with the witch. Thomasin would obviously still talk to the goat and so in, but we wouldnt see the bloodsmearing, the red hood or the flying. The way it is now it just repeat old myths about witches, rooted in antisemitism and patriarchy instead of deconstructing it. Ive seen a similar movie (which name I forgot) about a group of girls in basque country who got accused of being a witch. During the interrogation they tell lies about the supposed coven they are part of to get out of their punishment, but get dragged deeper and deeper until in the end they should perform a dark ritual, else they will get burned. They get so into it that they believe they can fly nad jump of a cliff. The whole thing was just a product of imagination that in the end even fooled themselves (or maybe not?). Obviously the VVitch is a better movie, just from pure craftsmanship, but I just wish the witch would have stayed more ambivalent (as in Blair Witch Project for example)

@@exlolm5647 The Difference Between Capacity and Speed You can measure RAM capacity in megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), or terabytes (TB). Increasing the size of your RAM reduces the likelihood of needing to use your hard drive for these temporary files. But once you have enough to meet your needs, you reach a point where adding more may not be the best way to get the speed improvements you’re looking for. You may benefit more from buying RAM that’s faster than the RAM you already have, even if it’s the same amount. Is Your Virtual Memory Too Low? Here's How to Fix It! Is Your Virtual Memory Too Low? Here's How to Fix It! Computer memory issues can slow down your computer over time. Here's how to set the virtual memory size and boost performance. READ MORE There are a couple of metrics that determine your RAM’s speed. Frequency affects maximum bandwidth, which is how much data can travel to and from your memory stick at a time. Latency affects how quickly RAM can respond to a request. Frequency is measured in megahertz (MHz) and you want a bigger number. Latency appears as a series of numbers (such as 5-5-5-12) and you want these to be lower. Once your capacity needs are met, increasing frequency and reducing latency may yield you a more noticeable result than packing in more RAM. As for how much of a difference you will notice, well, that depends. How Much (Or How Fast) RAM Do You Need? Having buckets of RAM is useful if you’re into professional video or audio editing. Yet even then, 8-16 GB of RAM should be enough to handle running several professional applications simultaneously. You likely won’t need to think about upgrading for several years, if that. If you’re a gamer, you may get some benefits from having 16 GB, but 8 GB can handle most games. Making the leap up to 32 GB is currently unnecessary. At that point, you may be better of getting faster sticks. Regardless of how you use your PC, speed won’t matter if your motherboard isn’t as fast as your RAM. A 1333 MHz motherboard will limit your 2000 MHz RAM to 1333 MHz. There are situations where more RAM is needed, but you’re more likely to encounter them if you manage servers. The demands of running applications, games, and websites simply aren’t that high to warrant packing your desktop with all the RAM you can muster.

The tickle fight was pure The thing to realize about this movie is how big the theme “Sins of the father” plays in it , the whole reason he’s even looking at his sister is cause she’s the only girl around that is close to his age thanks to his father , he is confused , but does push against this confusion well, to me the tickle fight was him overcoming and falling back into the more natural feelings of the relationship they have as siblings Also the father refusing to kill Philip wasn’t just him “giving up” it was more than that , it was him refusing to allow Phillip to corrupt him in full and bring the primal violence from him, it was him refusing to let Philip make him kill him, he threw the axe down and accepted his fate , perhaps redeeming himself in doing so

It's called VVitch because the letter W and its vowel were not part of the original Latin alphabet and were not yet standardized during the time period depicted in the movie. When Germanic languages (including old English/Anglo-Saxon) Adapted that alphabet, they wrote double V or double U, which eventually merged together into a W. So, it was always pronounced Witch.

@Gobblarr "The spelling of the title "The VVitch" is how the word was written in the story's period because the letter "W" was not yet in common use at the time." literally, the first thing that comes up when you type "Why is the witch spelled VVitch?" (From the movie's imdb page) From wikipedia's page on the English Alphabet "The letters u and j, as distinct from v and i, were introduced in the 16th century, and w assumed the status of an independent letter."

@Gobblarr here, from the director himself: www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/46m0lf/im_robert_eggers_writerdirector_of_the_witch_ama/ "In the period you see a lot of period sources with VV instead of W..."

Uriel T 16th century is the 1500s and if this movie takes place in the 1600s it had been around for a while. I’m using what you guys said as sources because I don’t feel like looking it up

Gobblarr I don’t know the history of W, so I won’t comment on that, but your use of “r/whoosh” makes you look like a pompous dumbass, which is ironic, considering the rest of your comment is devoted to calling someone else out for being arrogant and wrong. First and foremost, commenting a subreddit serves no purpose in a KZbin comment. Commenting *that* subreddit specifically is even worse since it completely defeats the purpose of the “whoosh” joke. Reread the parent comment. At no point are they correcting anyone on a joke, merely explaining something unexplained in the video. Your misuse if that sub is exactly why everyone else hates it.
