Holy Christ, can you people stop bitching about Goofball? He's a character in this series. Comic relief. You can argue that you want to hear more about the film, because it's supposed to be a "review" video. These aren't really "reviews", as far as the genre goes. They're called "Brain Dumps" for a reason. He's just giving some of his general opinions about the movies, sometimes he goes in depth to elaborate, sometimes he just references the overall theme. Hell, he doesn't even call them reviews, and he references the topics he's going to address in the title/description. His subscriber base was built on his dark, and vulgar humor(and his incredible animations). So, a foul-mouthed ghost in his new series makes sense, it reflects the type of humor this channel is known for. So, I think he fits right in.

Goofball is his own self-loathing as comedic stab at himself for violating his own creative ethos. He is appropriate, but he does not..."fit." Goofball intentionally does not fit. He is made to take the piss because only by taking the piss, only by harming the host can this remain satirical. Only disrupting itself can this show have meaning amongst the thousands of other movie reviews. I don't like the character. I would prefer to hear his thoughts on the film du jour, however, then would it really be the same person reviewing them? This is not just a review but a performance. I take the performance as it is, not as I might want, because what I would want would come from someone else who would not be this person I enjoy.

Well, he has the mouth animations on file. So he just places those wherever he needs them. As for the 3D animation, he isn't doing anything drastic. So the motions are really simple. Possibly has a few poses on file too. The only real time that these took is the editing I believe. Oh. And making the tools beforehand.
@DispleasedEskimo8 жыл бұрын
I heard he spent a year making all the art assets. So the 3D modelling, colour textures, character rigging etc. Now all of his time can be spent on writing and animating. Animation is hard work either way, but since the assets are made already, the hard work is essentially just moving those things around. He doesn't have to do loads of drawings and colouring-in every time he makes a thing now. (Also he's just very dedicated. I don't want to make it sound like it's super easy now or anything).

I'm a bit surprised by your analysis that you interpreted the movie as trying to paint the family in a bad light, as religious zealots who fall prey to their prejudice. What I got from the movie was a very chilling look into the Puritanical psyche, as if the director was posing the question "what if witches really existed in the way they were thought of in 1600s?" Which is very interesting, since so many stories have been told about witches existing but through a modern lens of what a witch is, or as you mentioned with the idea that witches don't actually exist as supernatural beings and the fear of witchcraft is more of a framework for tales of hysteria and prejudice. I think this is what makes The VVitch so compelling. I absolutely did sympathize with the family and understood their perspective. Admittedly I went into the movie expecting it to be another "Man is the real monster" type of story, only to have my socks knocked off when in the first five minutes of film we see an actual crone grinding up a baby to make a flight balm. I think Ralph Ineson gave a particularly amazing performance, and you really feel for his character and the mortal terror he feels for his family's souls (the scene where he eats dirt and begs God for his children's souls, wow). I think the story very much wants you to see this terrifying world from the Puritan perspective, and perhaps is less about wagging a finger at the characters from across the centuries, but more about illustrating how intense, fanatical devotion can cause people to create that which they fear the most. And I also kinda question if there is a more symbolic reading of the movie, such as the main character rejecting a stifling, strict lifestyle that she could not manage to fit into, and embracing a wildly opposing new lifestyle that others see as abhorrent but allows her self expression and agency that she was never afforded before. Anyway, sorry for the super long comment, I just have a lot of feels about this movie. :p Love your videos!

Part of the perspective is the isolation of the family. The dad didn't quite align with the Puritans, the kids were just being kids, and that got them kick out of the village. Plus being isolated in the woods can make the imagination run wild, who knows what lurks in the unknown.

I think the use of both is sort of a self fufilling prophecy about exclusive behavior. The more the family grew paranoid and acted hateful, the stronger the devil in the movie got. The girl became a witch over time because she was already outcast and had nowhere else to go by the end of it all. I think the message that they were trying to send was that exclusion and isolation that happened to their family and eventually the daughter doomed them. All from a religion that has been reinterpreted as something loving.

This one was a lot better than the other brain dumps. I'm pretty receptive to anything about perspective, so I'm not sure if it's just that talking. But I really liked this one

It is now believed that Salem had a severe ergot infestation in their crops. Imagine an entire town tripping balls without knowing it.

Hey Max, Fun fact: I am related to people from Salem Witch Trials! I was born in Beverly, Mass but grew up in Lynn close to Salem and Boston. Most of my family and ancestors are from Salem or Boston. :)

What you completely missed (and also completely freaking ruined right in the first few seconds) is that the audience ISN'T SUPPOSED TO KNOW whether or not the witches are real or imagined until the very end. The *whole point* of the tension, paranoia, and drama in the film is that you, like the family, really don't understand what the hell is happening. There's frequent allusion to the possibility that they're all just nucking futs, especially with the rotten crops, as ergot poisoning can induce terrifying nightmares and hallucinations. It isn't until the final three minutes of The Witch that the answer becomes clear, and you just spoiled the whole thing in your first thirty seconds...

@@sirwootalot It wasn't framed like a nightmare AT ALL. Just because she was having a nightmare the morning after doesn't mean you're supposed to tie the two events together. After the baby goes missing it IMMEDIATELY cuts to the witch running home with it. There's no mystery about the witch, she shows up multiple times in clear view and the scenes are shot exactly the same as the rest of the movie. You'd have to willfully mislead yourself to think there was any sort of confusion surrounding the existence of a witch. I was waiting the entire movie for any sort of twist but it really does show you a witch in the first 10 minutes and everything that follows is perfectly straight forward.

I think it was intentionally supposed to seem ambiguous to play on our expectations. As avid moviegoers, we expect the witch to not be real, and for the twist to be that the characters are delusional or crazy. So throughout the entirety of the movie, we viewers attempt to rationalize and contextualize every supernatural thing that transpires, until we ultimately cave in and accept the existence of the witch (or not). Even after Thomasin speaks to the devil himself, and joins the coven, we still have reason to believe it was all an illusion, even if it goes against what was shown to us on-screen. So depending on how much disbelief the viewer is willing to suspend, the witch grinding up the baby can be a nightmare created by Thomasin's guilty conscience, or the baby's literal fate. It is irrefutable that the movie shows us witches, but we can still argue it's just magical realism to contextualize the awful things the family does to itself. I think the existence of the witch is ultimately irrelevant to the family drama, which imo is the true conflict of the movie.
