@@Athils "Cheating" is not the point here. The point Radovid wants to tell in playing Chess is "Why should I follow any redundant "rules" someone else made up, which, in a game of survival and death, were not supposed to exist in the first place?" If you accept rules, you are a fool. If you even follow the rules, you are an even bigger fool. This is a KING's superior logic. There is no such thing as cheating. A true King is a realist - only then, you can claim victory when you win the game. Otherwise winning or loosing become delusional. This is basically how real life works, too. He thinks more far and beyond anyone else, up to the point where he suspects his own allies of today as his potential enemies of tomorrow. He's not really racist. Redania was fine when Vizimir was king. Radovid doesn't care about race, he cares about beating Nilfgaard and is prepared to do anything to do that. Even if it means letting Hierarch Hemmelfart and his witch hunters kill hundreds of non humans. If you save Triss in Witcher 2, he will not burn every mage. He has the conclave and keeps them on a short leash like Nilfgaard does. Only the mages who protest will die. Also, according to the book canon, the witch hunts start in 1272 and only hundreds will die. However, if Nilfgaard wins there will be rape, slavery, mass murder of foreigners so their own settlers will go there. In this scenario thousands will die. To both Roche as well as all the people here talking about Radovid being a lunatic, well, simply put, he isn't. Yes he is brutal towards non- humans and even more brutal towards sorceresses (even though that is somewhat understandable given what he has personally experienced and given the copious track record of sorceresses in treason, sowing war and regicide and subverting and undermining royal power, power that is meant by a ruler to use to serve the people's interest, to serve their own interests). But remember that this Radovid, if you don't kill him, goes on to unite the entire North, kick Nilfgaard's ass (despite overwhelming odds). A madman cannot do that. And as he said, the whole bit about Chess men, he didn't mean it literally. That sort of thing happens to the best of us. When we are in too much stress, sometimes we see shapes on fire or in the clouds and our minds meander off into random directions.

People who are pissed about Radovid's personality in this game clearly didn't pay attention in the first two. Even in the first game, Radovid only helped you for his own selfish purposes. He was always manipulative and amoral. He was brought up spoiled and in nobility, thus he had little grip on the impacts of his decisions, since he only commanded from afar and let his troops die for him, unlike Foltest, who not only walked along the siege tower and helped his soldiers against the La Valettes, but he even joined them in battle on the front lines. Witcher 2 was when his breakdown occurred, not 3. After the conspiracy by the Council of Mages was uncovered, lead by Phillippa Eilhart, the woman who practically raised him, he went full Stalin and became paranoid of everyone, blaming all mages for the crimes of the Council by staging mass executions, including all of his former mage advisors. So this is really just the aftermath of those events. He even says in this scene that in chess, a king can even be put in check by his own pieces, and chess is the art of "sacrificing your own pieces", a pretty thinly veiled metaphor for the mass executions of mages he ordered. tl;dr: He is called Radovid the Stern for a very good reason, even it is an understatement.

Radovid's not mad. He's saying himself that he's talking here metaphorically if Geralt makes fun of him. His point is that real life is different from chess, with different rules and more inequalities between the "player", but he's also saying that the status of king is similar. You have a different view of the wide picture, but are surrounded by other that can block your way and lead the enemy to checkmate you. That explains his character as he's persecuting mages only to gain support from the north and making the city weaker (it's stated that when he wins the war, persecutions stop a few years later), and show the future of Emhyr who's killed by his follower in the timeline when Radovid is still alive and winning the war.

I'm no expert, but I'll explain what Black was doing. Black had castled, which means that the King went to a corner of the board for protection. With two rooks guarding each other, there is no legal way to take one of the rooks without the other one counterattacking. So, Radovid cheated and knocked one of the rooks out of the way so he could take the other one. Because the King couldn't move out of the way (because the pawns happen to be blocking the King's path), it was checkmate. I'll also add that with that many pieces off of the board, the game was near its endpoint. The only strong piece that Radovid had was the Queen, which was also under threat by that rook. If he didn't move it, he would have lost it.

1:14 Radovid actually makes a very intriguing and revealing observation. Chess represents a very limited environment if one actually seeks to engage with true warfare and governance strategy concepts. Chess appears to be a more logical and mathematical exercise rather than anything resembling the chaotic, uncertain and nuanced nature of warfare. Just in military terms, Chess simply doesn't approach aspects such as logistics, espionage, sabotage, equipment, morale, topography, technology, weather and so on. His observations are, from my point of view, criminally underrated. Shame he's considered somewhat out of his mind in those scenes.
