The only problem with his plan is that he decided to kill Roch when Geralt was there. It leaves the mattet for the player to decide whether to let it happens or not. If only he wait for Geralt to leave then kill everyone and become King, Geralt by then will most likely to just let things go since its Witcher's code. Man he was so close to bring his vision comes true.

Tri Le If Geralt were 100% true to the Witcher's code I don't think he would have gotten involved in the plot to kill Radovid in the first place. You're right. He could have gotten away with the first part of his plan if he hadn't invited Geralt there when he tried to kill Thaler, Roche, and Ves, though I'm not sure he would have been able to execute the plan with any of them there. I think he underestimated the attachment Geralt has to his friends. If Djikstra had them all killed quietly, I think Geralt would have still found out and killed him, just for murdering his friends.

Mmmmm, I feel it's more like: Childhood is idolizing Roche. Adolescence is realizing that while Roche's patriotism is admirable, his desire to free Temeria at the expense of the other northern realms is questionable at best. Dijkstra, while just as manipulative as Radovid, is ultimately a pragmatic politician who will build the infrastructure and commerce that will allow the people of the North to thrive rather than persecute mages and non-humans simply because he enjoys doing so. Adulthood is realizing that, in the end, Geralt is saddled with an absolutely terrible choice: he can either save his friends and grant Temeria limited independence while the rest of the north is brought to heel under Nilfgaard; or he can sacrifice his friends and any chance of Temerian independence to realize Dijkstra's vision. All of this is made worse by the fact that if he does nothing, Radovid stays on the throne, and the persecution of mages and non-humans intensifies. None of these choices is ideal and while each one definitively alters the tide of the war, they still all lead to widespread suffering, which Geralt has little, if any, power to prevent.

Although I chose Roche in the end, Dijkstra was one of the best written characters in this game. And in a game that’s praised for its writing, that’s something. I think the decision after killing Radovid was too forced. Dijkstra calls out Geralt for using the whole ‘Witchers don’t do politics’ bullshit cover and then expects him to follow it when he announces he’ll kill Vernon and rule Redania
@sernoddicusthegallant6986

Definetely, Dijkstra was supposed to be one of the smartest characters and they conveniently made him dumber just so they could give the player the choice of who to side with. There was nothing stopping him from killing roache and gang once the witcher left. That being said it would be a really good choice if only it were done under less dumb circumstances. Dijkstra is pretty much the only decent choice for who to rule the north: Radovid is a fanatic, Emhyr is a ruthless tyrant and while Ciri is good natured shes also shown as being brash, childish and nowhere near as smart as the other options, its unlikely she would be able to reform Nilfguaard into a benevolent rule, after all even Emhyr struggled with internal conflict within his own courts. So it was a really tough choice for me to make the call between potentually screwing over the north from its best ruler or leaving Geralt's friends to die.

@@sernoddicusthegallant6986 Honestly if they just went back and changed his last lines it'd be fine. Instead of betting on Geralt's neutrality he should have just appealed directly to Geralt. Make it an actual choice, "This is best for the northern kingdoms and you know it" maybe make Roche and friends argue back, turn it into an ultimatum where Geralt can see both parties are going to fight, on equal terms. When it's Sigismund pulling some brain-dead stunt in front of Geralt it just makes it obvious who Geralt would side with.

Dijkstra is by far the most capable ruler in the Witcher world. After reading the books, I became dead certain that the best ending was him as ruler of the entire North. He is truly the jack of all trades. If he also knew how to properly fight, he'd be like one of those legendary philosopher kings from myths, like a fat King Arthur. I liked Ves, Thaler and Roche and it did feel like a huge betrayal to let them die (especially after they helped us with the war in Kaer Morhen) but let's be honest, their plan was fucking stupid and they were even more stupid to think that Dijkstra, the head of the Redenian intelligence, would be ok with fucking the rest of the North in Temeria's name. They played the game with the best player in the world and they lost.

Can I call bullshit on worldbuiding of mage hunts? There is no way that Nilfgard would not win super easy if they had mages while north was actively trying to kill them. And I do mean that, since applications of magic can be huge. Use portals for messages, troop movement and supply. Spy enemies while being transformed as a bird. Illusions to trick enemy scouts and weather control to for various reasons. Use mind control to make prisoners tell what they know ( a lot more reliable and faster than torture). And of course having beater healing in your camp and few who can throw fireballs is not useless. And these are only what I could come up with, I am sure that if I was hundreds of years old like many mages, I could come up with more interesting things.

But they are unreliable and treachery is their middle name.Radovid saw this and in turn chose to eliminate them and seize their wealth to fund more reliable means of waging a war. Since they are so powerful it grants them a lot of room to do stupid shit. Take the lodge for example and how they ended up. Mages are scum even if they are useful. And Emir knows this too, hence why he's keeping Yen and crew on such a short leash. Yen even dabbles in necromancy as proven in skellige.That's way too shady and can be used for many wrong deeds.And she's not the only one who can pull that stunt. Numbers mean nothing for an army of undead since whatever they kill can join their ranks.Any loses are easily mitigated. And honestly would you surround yourself as a ruler when any one of them can mess you up hard and get away with it? I think Radovid was on to something sadly his madness was his downfall and by far his greatest weakness. Ik ur comment is like 6 months old but hey :) Stay safe out there.

@@masaheimoi I see your point , of course they would have the upper hand ,but that doesn't mean that they can't be also the root of their downfall , in my opinion they are indeed a great boon , however their loyalty wavering in terms of their interests puts any ruler in a spot to please the mages and not actually doing what's right or necessary in regard to his subjects. Like take Triss for example she is a big help during the first fight with the wild hunt, but she can also be brought down pretty quick with an infiltrator.And her loyalty is 100% to herself , she's helping Geralt out of selfish reasons.Don't forget she was the one who tricked him into cheating on Yen. She was a leading head for the Lodge that consipred to gain more influence and political clout , she whines about it alot while in Novigrad when you meet her.At the end of the day , they are debased humans with questionable goals.And I doubt that the wellbeing of a country is a compelling motive for them. All of them sought higher power at great personal sacrifice and I doubt they did it to aid their fellow humans. And the fact that immortality is within arms reach for them is even scarier. But if they would not be maniacs ,and a strict humanitarian with a lawful neutral mindset would be the norm I would support mages.Sadly that's not the case. And just like rich folk they become desensitized to the day to day plights of the common man. Only when they are persecuted do they give aid to humans as a way to earn their favor. And as a last point. If Radovid managed to capture and kill mages on his territory, he could in theory do the same for the enemy mages.

There is HUGE difference between killing mages that are trying to hide in your land and killing mages working with organized army that can protect the mages and use the their skills tactically. That's the moment where dijkstra convinced me. The perfect ending for Witcher 3 is killing Radovid, letting Dijkstra rule the north and unite it toward industrialization, an advance that will modernize everything and foster scientific development, favoring the crumbling of superstitious prejudices against non-humans, for example. While Emhyr gets a taste of his own medicine and is killed by his countrymen, which puts a brake on expansionist politics, for a while at least. And I'm sorry, but there's no way to privilege the lives of Roche, Ves and Thaler and let nilfgaard finish his project. And there's no way that Dijkstra is wrong, because that wasn't even a hard decision, seeing as Roche literally tells you that he just sold out all the Northern Kingdoms to Nilfgaard and hopes you just kind of roll with it. Nilfgaard is clearly representing a German Nazi state, while Radovid's Redania is more akin to the medieval Dark Age Vatican.

If you consider the way geralt is characterised in the games and books, I don't think he'd ever in a hundred years decide to let his friends die. That being said: This is undeniably the best course of action for the largest number of people. Nilfgaard uses slavery, even if it's only mentioned in passing by NPCs. A lot of people can't bring themselves to let Roche and the gang die but personally I can't help but side with Dijkstra lest I end up feeling like we've sold out the country when there was another option that was better by a landslide.

It may have been a translation thing, but in the books Geralt's neutrality wasnt really expressed as a Witcher's principle, but Geralt's preference to avoid politics and mistrust those who engage in it. He absolutely would if he had a direct interest in it, and since Radovid is increasing the racism and persecution of Magic users and Nonhumans, which will very likely eventually include the hatred of Witchers and definetely includes the hatred of his sorceress waifus he has a direct interest in it.

One thing left out and not given consideration in the game is how brain dead stupid Roche and Ves' deal with Nilfgaard is. It's the exact same tactic they used to take both Cintra and all of Aedirn. Through diplomacy, make a concession to the country putting up the most resistance to weaken the rest of the battle line, then take the surrounding territory only to swallow up the previously conceded ground, through military or economic action. Emyhr got both King Henselt of Kaedwen and Francesca Findabair to dance to his tune while Nilfgaard devoured the people they called allies. Not sure about Francesca's eventual fate since I haven't made it that far in the books, but if you've played the Witcher 2, you know how well that worked out for Henselt. Nilfgaard cannot be trusted, Emyhr cannot be trusted. Dijstkra knows this, the Temerian resistance, somehow, hasn't learned, after three wars with their southern conquerors.

Radovid only turned out that way because of CDProjekt's inconsistent writing. He was very intelligent and calculative ruler in the first two games - but with the third game they just throw that all out the window, "nah, let's make him a madman all of a sudden, lub dub lub dub chess pieces have their hearts with blood!". Then again, this just shows what a mess Witcher 3's development was, as former developers who worked there have spoken out about mismanagement of projects.

THIS is Sigismund Dijkstra smart, grateful, compassionate but pragmatic patriot of Redania not that pretender in Reasons of State.

This game’s politics were such a let down after the books and Witcher 2 and the subsequent thronebreaker. In those games politics are way more interesting than Radovid going “mad” all of a sudden and Nilfgaard being portrayed as saviours. This is my favourite game ever but sad how many people believe it’s politics are well written in comparison to far superior political stories in other Witcher games.

Dijkstra can say as many rosy words as he wants, *doesn't mean he'll live up to everyone of them.* In fact he was counting on tugging Geralt's heart strings from the very start to get him involved in the assassination plot. He may not be the absolute worst but he's sure as shite no saint. In all honesty Dijkstra has a lot in common with the ole'Nilfgaardian Emperor, manipulative power gamers that hide behind masks of nice sounding speeches and playing on people's passions to get what they want. *There's no such thing as deserving anything,* only what you can taken by guile or by force or preferably both. The northern realms trade one overlord for another, one that uses the progressive sounding rhetoric and pretty little political policies to drum up the harrowing crowds. That all said I actually do like Dijkstra but what I don't like is the overly optimistic many viewers seem to have on him. Sure he might make a great ruler of the northern realms that is... *"if the northern realms wanted an overlord to begin with",* and by that I mean the majority, the common folk, and various organizations, religious and or cultural, not the lords nor "key players" of these northern states that supposedly speak on their behalf. If the peoples want a basically Northern Emperor then they'll have one, if not then Dijkstra must respect and help restore the old borders and seek the reconstitution of the old kingdoms and realms.
