If you want the best experience in The Witcher 3 turn off the HUD and map assists. It changes the game completely.

I recommend using the Friendly HUD mod for this. You can modify it so you can turn on the hud when using witcher senses. Some quests are pretty much impossible to complete the first time around since they rely more on the hud/map and don't provide clear directions in game.

The clickbait is pretty strong here. TLDW, it should have failed because open world games are generally harder to make and CDPR hadn't done one yet? Hmmm. There is just no basis for this video. Talented people make good games, simple as that.
@LightningRaven42
@LightningRaven42 6 жыл бұрын
Witcher 3 is CDPR's third game, ever. Prior to W1 CDProjekt had no developer division. Imagine that. They succeeded three times by putting effort and care and their third game, as stated by this video, managed to succeed where major publishers and well established studios struggled, still struggle or outright failed. On top of being the third game ever, their previous experience was only with linear games, which is why the Witcher 3 had a lot going against it,yet succeeded beyond our expectations (even if it has some flaws). Here. You can't get things more explained than that.

Ravan Santos Also Ubisoft nailed open world with their first attempts like earlier Assassin's Creed and Far Cry but now they just care about milking what worked before while focusing on marketing, rushing deadlines and dropping quality so it is hard argue that they are struggling to make a good game when they aren't even intending to.
@LightningRaven42
@LightningRaven42 6 жыл бұрын
+Cutter Elf I'll give you far cry, but the first Assassins Creed was pretty weak, even though it had some good elements in there. It was the only one I've played, mind you, but it was boring in so many fronts and the ending was so bad that I genuinely got lost by how abrupt it was and thought that it wasn't the actual ending. But as I've said, major developers struggled and still struggle to create a good experience that also delivers on the main story front. The Elder Scrolls:Skyrim is a good game, so much so that Bethesda has been milking it for years, but we all know that the base game without mods is full of flaws, weaknesses and only it's mod community that made it survive for so long.
@weaverquest
@weaverquest 6 жыл бұрын
Ravan Santos First AC was a visionary game basically established one of the biggest franchises ever and the open world was pretty amazing riding to Damascus and seeing the city from afar laid in front of you while you are on your horse is to this day a breathtaking moment. I agree about the story and weak ending but the parkour mechanics and combat was solid and the overall concept of animus was well integrated to gameplay with sync points and desyncing when you do something your ancestor wouldn't do like killing civilians, falling in the water or... you know, dying. Skyrim also has so much to offer in vanilla game otherwise it wouldn't survive on consoles this long I mean the game got ported the Switch 6 years after its release without mod support and people are enjoying it also there is Skyrim VR. Anyways the lore in Skyrim is amazing and the possibilities are endless for example you can fight dragons but also collect butterflies. Become a werewolf and terrorize people but also decorate your house with weapons and troll skulls instead. Go to Winterhold college to learn cool magic or get married and adopt a kid you get my point it is still the greatest fantasy sandbox adventure game. Guerilla games also nailed open world in their first try with Horizon Zero Dawn the games has excellent world-building, compelling narrative and engaging combat system with brilliant machine designs that have excellent physics and animations. The movement of Aloy is also very responsive and combat in particular isn't bogged down by combat stances and lock on enemy systems but rather you feel more freedom and is more tactical with scanning machines and developing your strategy based on particular weaknesses and components of the machines instead attacking in the general direction of the enemy one area it beats Witcher 3 but doesn't have as interesting or compelling side-quests as Witcher 3.

It was rather easy and had very little punishment. Even death march was practically a stat check once you had the signs and combat figured out. If they made you go through an animation to drink the potion or apply an oil it would make the combat much more meaningful and challenging.

Because it's *janky as hell*. The combat can still be fun, especially when you start unlocking the late game skills. But it's definitely not Triple-A standard. It feels like a beta most of the time. >Most enemies are either basic melee monsters or trash mobs with tiny movesets who are only dangerous because of high level or sheer numbers >Garbage hit detection >Atrocious lock-on and disruptive melee auto-aim >Dodges and rolls send you an unnecessary distance away most times and usually result in unwanted target switches >Magic tied to a continuous stamina bar - in an RPG >All magic costs the ENTIRE stamina bar no matter how weak or strong they are Dont get me wrong, I *ADORE* playing The Witcher 3, warts and all. But let's be honest, the combat is easily its weakest aspect; it definitely would *not* have carried the game on it's own merit, and it's not what this game will be remembered for in 20 years.

Hey Downward Thrust, first let me say that I am a big fan of your videos. I generally agree with almost every point that you make. But one thing I noticed is that your titles always have a negative connotation. Complaining about loot boxes and modern gaming trends is one thing, but even your positive videos always use this negative rhetoric like "Witcher 3 should have failed". Gaming is one of my favorite hobbies and I fully believe in critiquing it, but your titles always leave me with a feeling of fatigue, like I need to ready myself to watch it. I don't know if that makes sense. I still enjoy your work but I would appreciate at least a little more positivity in your titles and videos in general.

He even hints at blaming other games for adding loot boxes, making ea use them, which is the furthest from the truth. Ea invented the bs crate long before these games existed.

I don't call many things masterpieces. However, it's hard to look back on the Witcher 3 and say that it wasn't a masterpiece. No matter all the insignificant flaws that get COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY overshadowed by all the things that this game does right. No game has ever made me feel this way about it's characters,story, lore and world. The amount of outstanding detail that CD Projekt red has put into this game is phenomenal. Any game i play now at days feels empty and shallow compared to this masterpiece.

I'm lost. I heard comments as to how it COULD have failed, but not why it SHOULD have failed. Tldr for the video; if cdpr hadn't have improved upon the previous games and made the choices it did, it wouldn't be as good. Pretty, huge difference between could and should.

Sterv Falls ya title is bullhonky it should have been less of a success. But even then I think that title is wrong because a good game is a good game. Good devs are good devs. You could say the same about morrowind or dark souls or any other game. And you could say the same about cod 1. Cdpr have had a decent eu following since the first witcher the game was built on the profits of 2 and almost all who bought that game wanted 3 so it wasn't ever going to fail.
@stervfalls2630

Mike Donoghue I have absolutely no issues with the content of the video. Just the title. When I see someone I consider to have integrity using clickbait it bothers me (haaate clickbait and misleading titles). It's the whole "you're better than this" arguement. As for what you said. Yeah, pretty much. They built 2 solid games, 2nd improving massively from the 1st. All they had to do was continue with that same commitment to the game and it would be impossible to fail. Although personally I think it got the success it deserved and worked for. Everything else I could write explaining why it was a success is in this video. So I'm not going to repeat it.

Am I the only one who really liked the combat in TW3? It was very compact and well made with all the factors like signs, armors and weapons, execution finishers, oils and potions, different enemies with different attack patterns, but especially the dodge that would allow you to evade attacks at the last second making you feel like a god. Or can someone tell me why the combat is so bad in many peoples eyes?

Probably because those people decided to just use the strongest armor, weapons and runes, then use only Igni out of all the spells to cheeze every fight even on Death March... I did that and the combat was really boring. Playing without armor made combat so much more fun, as it forced me to time the dodges/rolls and attacks, switch between spells (Quen became important lol) and actually use potions (which I ignored for way too long) :D

@toolshedvideo
@toolshedvideo 6 жыл бұрын
Golo Wirz Geralt has poor control over his moves. He doesn't always dodge in the direction you commanded. Too much emphasis on spins and twirls may look cool, but it's a bad combat mechanic. His attack speed becomes unpredictable, because he adds so much superfluous movement to every attack. People who try to use the books as a defense for the twirling moves are being idiotic, because good lore does NOT make for a good game mechanic. Skill trees are basically useless, because every player has the same skill set. All the magic was insanely OP, even on Death March. Quen makes you legitimately invincible, it's an in-game cheat mode. Potions are not essential at all. You can completely ignore that entire skill tree, and it won't affect the game in any real way. Crossbow just straight up doesn't work. Hit detection was atrocious, even at point blank range. Play Nioh, Souls, or Bloodborne to see what real dodging and combat mechanics look like. W3 is garbage across the board in regards to combat.

Following his most recent video which was written by himself (he hires a writer to help with his scripts), multiple people including myself decided to stop supporting him on Patreon and leave his Discord server for Patrons. We got tired of his inability to take criticism if at all, without being hypocritical (ie this video). Also the negativity of the questions he poses along with the repetitiveness were enough for me to unsub. Call it the "last straws on the camel's back." He has since removed the tiers of Patreon on his page and said he was planning on deleting his Twitter among other things. Regardless, I do wish you all the best, Tone. Have a good one, and I hope KZbin treats you fairly. However, I am done watching for the time being.

It's the same route EA and Activision, that DT criticized time and time again, go. His latest videos were not only strong in the clickbait department but also unnecessary. If he currently is out of topics them he should either take a break or listen to his supporters. His actual supporters, not the general viewer that is not even subscribed. People who say witchers combat system sucks either 1. Hate sword based fights in general or 2. They didn't play the game to it's max. Potential. Increasing the difficulty to at least death march basically forces you to start preparing and dodging ALOT more. Sure on normal difficulty you just hack down on someone with 3 huts and kill them while one hit of them deals you 1/8 of your health in damage. But on highest difficulty things like potions or oils really make a difference and guess what slot of times you can only withstand 1 hit if maybe none at all. Requiring you to be shielded with quen at all times and using all of geralt kit and movement. When you get the flow of the whole system you start playing the game much more intense and you'll enjoy every second of it

I don't understand why you thought the combat system was bad. I though the combat was awesome for an open world game. Each opponent type required a different approach to win and there were often multiple strategies to use to win the combat. I thought it was brilliant. After Skyrim's very simplistic "hit until its dead" mechanics, it was very refeshing. It blew my mind the first time I encountered a large group of drowners. I had not anticipated someone someone programmed the drowners well enough that they knew just how to pull off a false retreat tactic. Time and time again I would see that clever AI that delivered an interesting challenge. It was no fighting game, but I hate fighting games. A lot of fighting games ultimately boil down to exploits in the game play to master them and being about to recognize actions from a few frames of build up. The first makes me feel cheezy. The second makes me feel incompetent.

TC IronBear Have you ever noticed how some kick your bombs away, grab any dropped weapons (including your own) and use them against you, or Hinox blocking it's eyes after being struck just two times in that weak spot, or use fire from literally any source to make wooden weapons burst into flames upping their damage against you, if you try to just grab peblets and hold them in the air they eventually explode trying to take you down with them, Moblins can actually throw smaller enemies at you when angered, Talus enemies will eventually attempt to knock you off by body slamming itself to the ground when you are on them for too long, Wolves start to run away once you have killed a single member in their pack because they recognize you are too big of a threat, throwing food items near enemies make them wary of their surroundings and then they will attempt to run over to it and eat it. They will also give attention to bombs and after realizing what it is they will kick it out of the way, burning off Hinox's leg armor makes it hop around trying to put out the flames before it finally burns away completely, etc. So not sure what you mean. Those enemies can be pretty darn clever if you ask me. Maybe you just didn't notice all the small details that are actually in the game? There are a ton.

There's no way a game with this much love and that's this good should have been missed. This is one I'm so glad I didn't miss.

This guy literally just hates huds and thinks a game is bad about it because of them. How do you think a game is gonna keep players and particularly new players if there is no hud or mini map and players can't find out where to go in a huge open world? All this dude does now is hate on games and milks this "video games suck" content. I use to enjoy the content when it was like a new vid every 2 times a week.

Why companies like CDPR succeed: their treat their games like art, and thus win both the money and respect of their customers, whom they treat as human beings Why companies like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft fail: they treat their games as a means of making money, nothing more. Even if they make a profit, they will never earn the respect and trust of their customers, whom they treat as money-milking machines, nothing more.

you glorify CDPR a bit too much. CDPR is a public company. They do care about the profit as any other game dev studio (does not matter EA, UBI or Ninja Theory, frictional games or other small indie devs). You work to earn money. The thing is that they take a different approach. They want to distinguish themselves. Witcher3 is an example of that. Premiere the box was full of additional stuff, the small cosmetic like DLCs were for free and they were working on and charging for Expansion Packs - two additional stories for at least a two dozens of hours each. But this in my opinion is just a smart marketing strategy. Don't get me wrong, with companies that want to milk the customers out of every penny, what CDPR does is a good thing (even if it is a carefully planned markering strategy) as it is customer friendly. It seems to be more open and straight forward than the recent examples od Destiny2 or SW BF2.

You are absolutely right. I am aware that CDPR is a company, and its purpose is to make money. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, I just respect those guys and their work so much :)

Funny how this video reminds me of much of a failure DA inquisition was and why.. Damn, that game made me feel bitter. And when it was followed by Andromeda I totally lost my faith in bioware.

My friend blitz through the story in 3 day while i stick dick around on Skellige without even started the "find Yennefer" mission for weeks. I wanted to replay the game 2nd time for Triss play through but i don't have enough will power to do all the side quest but my PTSD is not low enough for me to skip it out right.

His content was unique and well done but this particular video not so much. And I don't think anyone expected this game to fail it just did better than expected a lot better. But in Europe there's a big cdpr following since witcher. I got into them after I read rise of the white wolf was cancelled and bout the pic game. Many of my friends bought enhanced edition and pre ordered 3 despite many of em not being big gamers.
