Most of the criticism is on the representation the show is putting in. Claiming it isn't accurate to the lore. This series is all about the Elves and leading up to the conjunction of spheres(none of the books deal with this). I mean he was a big movie star and huge fan of the IP willing to take less pay to try and lift the series up. Then it became obvious with the casting and the plot of the first season. The showrunner was basically trying to make some CW teen drama level garbage that had virtually nothing to do with the source material.

One thing I noticed watching this (I didn't watch the actual show) was that the costumes and props look so new; no distressing to the costumes (eg like in LoTR or PotC), which makes them seem lived in and well used. You often see that on budget, b-movie sets because I guess they don't have the money to have multiple versions of a costume at different levels of distress. It's surprising considering how much money was spent on the show.

This is a great comment and a problem I had with the Wheel of TIme show. The reason why Netflix and Amazon productions have this problem where HBO and big hollywood studios don't is that they have a library of props from other films and tv shows. For example Westworld used the same set as Deadwood. The money saved went into making the props and the new sets (the futuristic stuff) way higher quality. When you can re-use or save budget the result is a better show. THe problem I had with the Witcher over WoT is that despite the new looking clothing in WoT the actual design of the costumes looks good and fits my imaging from the books. Whereas the Witcher show especially the Nilfgaard armour looks like shit. The only positives are Dandelion's ouifit and Geralt. Everything else looks generic.

Yeah, aesthetically it's a disaster and when they have the book mention the beauty of elven architecture and it's specifics (like the fact that elves, because they never warred with each other, only occassionally clashing wiht ohter races like dwarves etc., build no defensive walls nor fortified castles but only delicate palaces etc.): "Ciri saw the palaces from behind the weeping willows which hung down towards the water like green curtains. She had never seen anything like them in her entire life. The palaces, although built of marble and alabaster, were like fragile bowers. They seemed so delicate, light and airy, as though they weren’t buildings but apparitions of buildings. Ciri expected at any moment that the wind would blow and the little palaces would vanish along with the mist rising from the river. But when the wind blew, when the mist vanished, when the willow branches moved and ripples appeared on the river, the little palaces didn’t vanish and had no intention of vanishing. They only gained in beauty. Ciri looked in admiration at the little terraces, at the little towers resembling water lilies sticking up from water, at the little bridges suspended above the river like festoons of ivy, at the staircases, steps, balustrades, at the arcades and cloisters, at the peristyles, at the tall and short columns, at the large and small domes, at the slender pinnacles and towers resembling asparagus spears. ‘Tir ná Lia,’ Avallac’h said softly. The closer they went, the more the beauty of the place seized her powerfully by the heart, more powerfully squeezed her throat, making tears well up in the corners of her eyes. Ciri looked at the fountains, at the mosaics and terracotta, and at the sculptures and monuments. At lacy constructions of whose purpose she couldn’t conceive. And at constructions she was certain served no purpose." There is also the account of Hen Gedymdeith, *Elves and Humans*, from Blood of Elves, Prelude to Ch. 4: "Upriver we saw their towns, as delicate as if they were woven from the morning mist out of which they loomed. It seemed as if they would disappear a moment later, blown away on the wind which rippled the surface of the water. There were little palaces, white as nenuphar flowers; there were little towers looking as though they were plaited out of ivy; there were bridges as airy as weeping willows. And there were other things for which we could find no word or name. Yet we already had names for everything which our eyes beheld in this new, reborn world. Suddenly, in the far recesses of our memories, we found the words for dragons and griffins, mermaids and nymphs, sylphs and dryads once more. For the white unicorns which drank from the river at dusk, inclining their slender necks towards the water. We named everything. And everything seemed to be close to our hearts, familiar to us, ours. Apart from them. They, although so resembling us, were alien. So very alien that, for a long time, we could find no word for their strangeness." More elven architecture: The ruins of Shaerrawedd, Blood of Elves Ch. 4: “This was… a castle?” “A palace. The elves didn’t build castles. Dismount, the horses won’t manage in the rubble.” “Who destroyed it all? Humans?” “No, they did. Before they left.” “Why?” “They knew they wouldn’t be coming back. It happened following their second clash with the humans, more than two hundred years ago. Before that, they used to leave towns untouched when they retreated. Humans used to build on the foundations left by the elves. That’s how Novigrad, Oxenfurt, Wyzima, Tretogor, Maribor and Cidaris were built. And Cintra.” (...) They jumped down the marble stairs, climbing down holding on to the springy hazel, clusters of which had burst through every gap, every crevice in the moss-covered, cracked plates. “This was the centre of the palace, its heart. A fountain.” (...) The stream feeding the fountain must have changed its course many times, patiently and constantly washing the marble blocks and alabaster plates which had sunk or fallen to form dams, once again changing the course of the current. As a result the whole area was divided up by shallow gullies. Here and there the water cascaded over the remains of the building, washing it clean of leaves, sand and litter. In these places, the marble, terracotta and mosaics were still as vibrant with colour, as fresh as if they had been lying there for three days, not two centuries. Geralt leapt across the stream and went in amongst what remained of the columns. Ciri followed. They jumped off the ruined stairs and, lowering their heads, walked beneath the untouched arch of the arcade, half buried beneath a mound of earth. The witcher stopped and indicated with his hand. Ciri sighed loudly. From rubble colourful with smashed terracotta grew an enormous rose bush covered with beautiful white-lilied flowers. Drops of dew as bright as silver glistened on the petals. The bush wove its shoots around a large slab of white stone and from it a sad, pretty face looked out at them; the downpours and snows had not yet managed to blur or wash away its delicate and noble features. It was a face which the chisels of plunderers digging out golden ornaments, mosaics and precious stones from the relief sculpture had not managed to disfigure." There is Tir na Bea Arainne, underneath Mount Gorgon, in Tower of the Swallow Ch. 7: "The witcher sighed involuntary. This was not the first time that he had seen Elvish sculptures and relief, but every time, the feeling was the same. The figures of elves frozen in full motion in a blink of an eye, as if it was not the product of chisel and sculptor but a powerful wizard’s spell that could transform living tissue into white marble from the Amell Mountains. The closest sculpture featured a young elf sitting crossed-legged on a basaltic plate. The elf was straining her neck and had her head turned as if she their footsteps. She was completely naked. The milk-gloss of the polished marble gave the feeling that her beautiful body was warm and radiated heat. Avallac’h stopped and leaned on one of the columns that defined the path between the sculptures. ‘For the second time,’ he said quietly, ‘you have found me out, Geralt. You were right, the buffalo is painted on the wall as camouflage, which is there to prevent people digging through the rock and protecting all that is hidden behind it. It was supposed to prevent the devastation and theft. All races, the elves too, are entitled to their roots. What you see here are our roots. Tread carefully please. This is actually a cemetery.’ The light dancing from the mountain crystals revealed more and more details - statues, reliefs, monuments, columns and arcades. Everything in white marble." And Palace Beauclair, an elven palace modified by human architecture, in Lady of the Lake Ch. 3: "‘An elegant little castle,’ Cahir said in admiration. ‘Well I’ll be, an elegant and pleasing little castle, indeed.’ ‘The duchess lives well,’ said the vampire. ‘You have to admit it.’ ‘Fucking nice gaff,’ added Angoulême. ‘Beauclair Palace,’ repeated Reynart de Bois-Fresnes proudly. ‘An elven edifice, only slightly modified. Allegedly by Faramond himself.’ ‘Not allegedly,’ objected Regis. ‘Beyond any doubt. Faramond’s style is apparent at first glance. It suffices to look at those small towers.’ The slender white obelisks of the red-roofed towers referred to by the vampire soared into the sky, rising up from the castle’s delicate construction which grew wider towards the ground. The sight evoked the image of candles with festoons of wax flowing over the intricately carved base of a candlestick. ‘The town spreads out at the foot of Beauclair,’ explained Sir Reynart. ‘The walls, naturally, were added later. After all, as you know, elves don’t wall their towns. Spur on your horses, noble comrades. We have a long road ahead of us. Beauclair only seems close, but the mountains distort perspective.’"

One point about the elves not feeling like elves. I play a lot of D&D. I've been DMing my own homebrew world for years and I've taken a lot of pride in writing the lore mostly for my own amusement, but also to let the players know that the world they are playing in have answers to many questions and there's a lot of stuff to discover underneath the surface. I hold no illusions that my world is better or worse than thie Netflix series. But there is one thing that I would like to pontificate that I learned just a few years ago where it comes to fantasy races and my own philosophy on having different races in a fantasy world. Humans are humans. That is pretty basic. I believe that humans can come in all flavors in a fantasy world. And you should account for that any player should be able to see themselves in your world with good enough reason (I kinda draw the line at overly contemporary things, like playing an "Otherkin" but I digress). It is however my belief that anything that isn't human should feel, sound, and look alien. Elves are not humans. They don't look human. They don't sound human. They don't think like humans. I believe that there should be conflict between elves and humans (A thing I actually stole from the Witcher universe) BECAUSE they are different. An Elf has a wholly different set of morals and priorities than a human, their outlook on life itself should be different. Is there overlap? Of course. But at the base line an Elf will look at an event with one set of eyes. And a human will look at the same event with a different set. And they will draw many wildly different conclusions because they are different. I make a point in my world to say that if you're just going to play a Dwarf but it's just a human with a funny hat then you might as well play a human. I would LOVE to see a prequel of the Witcher where we see the first Elves and they act "Weird" to us throughout most of the show because the way they view the world is different from us. These Elves are just humans with pointy ears. The show would not change at all if the Elves in this show just were human. Remember when we go to see Ge'els in Witcher 3. And when we speak to him he just has this creepy vibe to him? Same with Avvalach and Eredin and all of the Aen Elle, they have this alien quality to them that makes them just feel "Off" when you speak to them. That is all it takes. You don't need them to walk backwards or breathe through their ears. But a human interacting with an elf should be on his toes because he just can't read them properly. And Elves to each other shouldn't act just like humans. We had so many characters in this prequel that just act like regional british stereotypes. Oh look there's a drunk yorkshireman with pointy ears. There's a cockney bastard, with pointy ears. Obviously the problem comes down to writing. And the writers on this show really dropped the ball.

Elves should look at the long view of things because they tend to live a long long time. That alone colors so many different decisions and conflicts. They might choose to avoid conflict instead of engage in it unless it actually implicates them. Lotr did a great job with elves.

One of D&D's many flaws is that the large amount of races are basically all humans with either pointier ears, teeth, or some animal feature tacked onto them. That, and the boring stat differences. Good that some people understand that's not how a fantasy world should work.
@Muninnnr Жыл бұрын
In the words of Avallac'h in The Witcher 3 when talking to Geralt: "The only thing we have in common is that we both firmly believe that each of us firmly superior to the other". The elves in The Wticher seems humans like animals. The elves are sophisticated, cultured, elegant and in many ways superior to the humans. But they are also incredibly cruel, manipulative and all around unpleasant. Portraying them as humans with pointy ears is such a disservice to the many interesting way to could take advantage of these traits.

Netflix make this blood origin, based on just 3 sentences inside the book. The author, Andrzej Sapkowski, witcher book have always been a focus on Geralt of Rivia and his adventures. The conjunction of sphere lore was only mentioned because the author want to leave it to the reader to imagine what is the world building like. He also probably worried that if he explained more on the conjunction of sphere, the lore will probably clash with some of main storyline of Geralt of Rivia. There is an ENTIRE arc in the book, about Geralt and jaskier going to different and exotic places in the world, doing monster slaying quest, encountering different type of very interesting monster/wraith. HELL, they even solve an intriguing murder case!! WHY not stretch that arc into 12 episode????? WHY NETFLIX WHY!!!!

It's been the same since season 1. They contradict their own lore constantly - like how psycho-doppler says that he knows everything Mousesack knows, yet gets caught on a lie by two kids. Or how Vesemir in anime says that there are multiple ways to kill a leshen, yet in the show says that only fire through the heart can kill it - only for one of them to die by the claws of another monster, who wasn't fiery at all. This whole thing probably has some vague outline, but the details are invented and forgotten on a whim.

Half the time the evil mage was trying to go into some realm the special effects were just not working. This show had problems plaguing it from the beginning and it sucks because even I don’t know much about the lore, but it feels like they skimmed through the text then wrote their own interpretation. when you described the chemistry as "i´m not complimenting it, but compared what´s to come..." i knew it can´t be good if something that doesn´t deserve praise is said as the best part

I watched this show just before seeing this review of it. And I have to say that the best thing about it is how good it makes "The Rings of Power" and the final season of "Game of Thrones" look.

I understand how you felt that you had to watch the show because I was literally waiting for your review, I kept checking your channel uploads. And this is the most detailed review I've seen. I knew that the story was bad, but 'how was it bad', was a big question. Thank you so much for enduring this show for us!

It‘s actually interesting to hear all that bc for sb who didn‘t get to read the books and play the games the main show was like insane to me and I loved every single moment till i found out that it‘s not the real story at all but this show was so boring i hated every second watching it bc as you said everything was too rushed i didn‘t even get close to be emotionally attaches to sb from this series and so on so i‘m happy that this comunity is so strong and is not just gonna wait in silent so the writers can earn all the money they don‘t deserve at all

The Critical Drinker mentioned something worth addressing: why was The Empress so adamant at going to the other worlds? Her empire was hanging by a thread to begin with, nothing first/second/third hand to her implied that there was anything of value (to the empire) on the other side. It's only Sintra's one erroneous portal that gives a hint of a landscape that isn't dusty, dry and barren. For it to make sense -and maybe the dropped episodes did this - they would've needed some 'scouting' scene that has them stumbling upon the human world, some place they could raid for supplies in the short-term.
@ElSchmiddie Жыл бұрын
I think it was Balor who told them it would the lands of milk and honey while he was gathering information and the beast for his own plans. It can be seen as Eredin and his group stumbled through the portal, not knowing what's going on, first searching for water and fertile land. And in one line it's said to Brother Death, that the dwarves buried the black penises for fertility and the elves digging them out make their own death sentence, also there is a 1000 year long war of attrition going on between 3 kingdoms depleting the countries. So looking for more opportunities when miracly showing up is understandable.

3:38 "...then Dog Clan guy gets exiled by his Papa and is very sad." And you can tell he's sad because his ears are drooping - much like my dog's ears do when HE is sad, and thus we come full circle with how the Dog Clan earned its name.

It genuinely hurts to see my favourite universe to be masacred like that. Imagine if the characters in books were introduced like those in this "masterpiece". Imagine if Cahir wasn't tiesed at and developed for 3 books, but just appeared in the forest before Geralt and Milva and said something like "Eh i like killin', imma join ya". Not to mention the butchering of canon such as bearded elves, black elves, dvorves without beards, elven witchers and so on and so forth

not only that , they effectively put a tombstone on the franchise before it ever gets a fair chance.

They don't even get the few cultural facts about elves rights like they don't built fortresses or walls or that they don't know farmings. Very few but precises informations and yet they screwed that up.

I watched this with my parents, now my parents didn't read the books, so they don't know the lore. But I do know the lore, and I had multiple moments where I went "this is going to happen... now" But I was extremely confused when dog clan man fell in love with raven clan girl, like, what? How? There was NO character development that indicated it should go that route. It felt rushed, and both me and my parents were disappointed when it ended.

exactly! I came without any expectation because I haven't played the game or read the books, and it is so annoying that I'm supposed to take all these romances for granted, whether it's Geralt and Yennefer (let alone the other lady in that meaningless scene where she propositioned Geralt) or Fjall and Eile. It adds nothing to the story, not even emotional impact. All this time, I'm mildly entertained and want to know more, but there's no payoff in the show whatsoever. I also forgot that Merwyn was supposed to be "smart" and "woke" because again, there's no evidence later of either of those things. She walks through the streets of poor people, and that somehow contributes to her Grand Idea of going to other worlds for food... like, okay? Wear your gorgeous dresses (they really were, weren't they!) but your economic policy is terrible. It made me sad because I too really wanted to like it, I wanted something to redeem the franchise, but the same mistakes keep happening. I feel like I'm on a different plane from the showrunners who keep hyping it up, but I'm not seeing what they're seeing. :(

@@CharmEng89 As for Geralt and Yen it's just writers butchering great romance from the books. In the books this romance is really interesting and believable! My advice is simple: f*ck the series (it's just bad) and read the books (thanks to games all the books were translated to English).

I believe that a TV show on a streaming service should have enough content, a cohesive story, and well-developed characters with depth, so that even if I fall asleep while watching a few episodes, I will still know what is going on and be interested in replaying the previous episodes. I'm not interested in replaying any episodes.

This and Rings of Power reminds me of that old stick figure comic where a guy is excited to hear his favorite video game "Blue" is about to get a movie and when he's in the theater about to watch it, the title of the movie is in bright red color.

Because Netflix despite making some good series like for e.g Violet Evergarden made the most toxic movies and shows ever. Their series "13 Reasons Why" was romanticizing suicide. And Cuties? I think you can talk about sexualizing kids without showing images that sexualize them.

@fantasywind3923 Жыл бұрын
Heh, the whole clan thing as far a societal structure goes....is fitting for the dwarves NOT the elves, the dwarves of Mahakam were divided into numerous clans, the elves the Aen Seidhe were not, they appear to have noble houses (like house of Feleaorns of the White Ships, from which Filavandrel was descended) but as a nation they seemed to be pretty united, they were the Aen Seidhe People of the Hills, the 'other' ethnic elven group would be the Aen Elle the Alder Folk, the extradimensional elves from another world :)...that the netflix scriptwriters completely erased from the live action witcher adaptations ahah.

Genuine sadness, The witcher was such a small little series until the Witcher 3. It was great seeing people get into the series I've been so fond of for years. Unfortunately this and the Witcher series on netflix spit at the beauty that is the Witcher. Cavil will always be Geralt and I'm so grateful for what he fought for, seeing him in the show was probably the best thing to come out of all of this.
