The Witcher // What was Geralt's Last Wish?

Andrzej Sapkowski never specified what Geralt chose as his last wish in the final short story, "The Last Wish" in the book also called "The Last Wish"
There are two popular fan theories. Personally, I think one is bogus. And I have an altered version of the main fan theory, on back of watching The Witcher Season 1
We're going to do a shorter, show version of this hypothesis within the next few days since the book and show adaptation have a few differences

There's a lot to this one. If you find this confusing, hang on for the show version of this hypothesis. But I had to make this one since I thought about it a lotttt over the last couple months in terms of the details that we get in the book, which is different in some regards than the show. Primarily, in the fact that Yennefer heard the last wish in the book. And there are some other differences which I'll point out in the show version of the video.

Very solid explanation! Probably the best of ones I heard. All the time I was into theory that the wish was to have child with Yennefer, but the one with wording of "Yennefer to have his child" as this big brain 200 IQ move on Geralt's part, to escape his destiny and Child Surprise is really good. It's a shame they made it so she didn't hear his wish. It made their intimacy that followed kinda artificial.

Yeah, but I think that leads people to believe that he simply wished for Yennefer to live. He's in love with her and wants to be with her. He wants to create this perfect family for the both of them. He wants to be normal and Yennefer wants a child. Therefore, so as not to lose her he binds her destiny with his through his child surprise. This could make a lot sense judging off the very last episode of the show. Ciri asks who Yennefer is, because she perhaps knows that her and Geralt's destinies are connected to this individual as well.

There is no theory; it's already established that he wished for he and Yen to be forever tied together. It's established in the books and in TW3. There's an entire quest about it where they both find the genie and break the spell to determine if the reason they keep coming back to each other because they love each other or because it was his wish to be tied together.

thing is, how do you say that in a not vague way? With djinns you have to be very choosey with now just a wish but how to phrase it. Saying "to have my child" would very much lock their fates together. considering, Ciri asked who yen was. And yen does treat ciri like her own daughter too.

jokes aside, here's the quote in the books, implying that geralt will make a wish that results in their fates being tied, but the wish is something specific “But he’s …” he groaned suddenly, “still got one wish in reserve! He could save her and himself! Mr. Krepp!” “It’s not that simple,” the priest pondered. “But if … If he expressed the right wish … If he somehow tied his fate to the fate … No, I don’t think it would occur to him. And it’s probably better that it doesn’t.” (The Last Wish)

Big difference from you. To my understanding, his is wish is to intertwined his fate to Yennefer. Geralt always thought his "sword of destiny have to edges, the one is Geralt, the other is ... death" (that was what he thought). Again Geralt is the djinn master, so the djinn cannot kill his master, therefore cannot kill Yennefer. it's a nice loopy paradox. Back to "The Sword of Destiny," he was wrong about the other edge being his death, it's actually "Ciri." Therefore 3 of them was intertwined together, a wholesome surrogate family. The problem with wishing for Yennefer is Geralt didn't for his child surprise or ignoring destiny itself.

You sound so "New Jersey" when you say author😂❤️✌️I thought Yennefer gave up motherhood when she went thru the transformation of changing from a hunchback. That's what sorcerer tells her and she accepts. Didn't think it was from being a sorceress.

Hmmp this was interesting, you're right the child theory is in line with these two characters personal dilemmas but I heard show-Geralt already told Yen what his last wish was, it's the same as the book series although the author didn't completely spelled it out. I haven't watched the series yet but I've asked a friend who did. Here's my take on it from the book's context. Yen might have wished for a child if she caught the genie but I'm not convinced Geralt at that moment thought he wanted to have a child with her, I believe he just wanted her (the source of that lilac and gooseberries scent). He was determined to save her and at that moment the only way is by binding her to him (the master) whichever way possible, because a commonly vindictive Djinn would lash out on people but will never harm its master (implied by what happened when it was freed, injuring only Dandilion and more so implied by Geralt's manner of helping Yennefer). He shielded and kept holding onto Yen during this fight, at first you'll think he's restraining her but actually he prevented the djinn from attacking by being physically 'attached' to her, by being in close proximity (an attempt to kill Yen would hurt the master). If the circumstance allowed it.. I assume Geralt would've wished the djinn gone whilst he kept her safe in his arms, unfortunately towards the end she managed to tie him up using magic.. making him unable to get a hold of her. Without that physical connection/contact, there was only one way to bind her to him effectively, albeit profoundly.. thru their fates. Also, he realized Yen was his kindred spirit right before he made the wish.. so he was comfortable committing himself. It didn't really matter to him if magic was involved or not.. they were bound to walk the same paths anyways (Lol, sorry I tried to avoid grand words to describe what Geralt felt for Yen, but there.. 'kindred spirits' sounds good though lol.) This dawned on him in the middle of the fight.. when he saw her past as a hunchback; this after she compeled him to punish the townfolks who gossiped and plotted against her .. right then he realized at her core Yen was also an outcast like him, that she would understand him more than anyone else. After realizing who the true Yen was and knowing he can't bare to lose her (he grew afraid she'll get angry & never forgive him once she discovers he saw her truth), that's only when he made his final wish, he simply binded her fate to his.. that whichever end awaits him, she will have to face too (he may not have any specific end in mind, not death, a family with her nor any happy ending). The djinn had no choice but to fulfill that wish, Geralt's will has power over it more than its own desire. There's no chance Geralt would die or least be hurt by the djinn's doing so the same should be true for Yen.. the djinn had to leave her unscathed. I also suspect Geralt wished it partly because he didn't want her to cut ties with him or push him away afterwards.. this fear of loosing her was at the forefront of his mind right when he made the final wish. I heard there was already a scene in the show where Geralt revealed to her he commanded the djinn to bind her to him.. another person with them suggested he made that wish for his own sake, so he'll never lose her but Geralt insisted he made it because it's the only option left to save Yen.

I wouldn't discount the 'dying with yennefer' theory so abruptly. Maybe your interpretation of it isn't possible, but I don't think your problems are necessarily a sure thing. 1. Genies may be able to kill their master if it is their wish, but to wish for a future death with Yennefer does not mean the djinn has to kill him immediately, he merely had to entangle their destinies so that Yen and Geralt are bound in some way, including whenever they eventually die. 2. Nothing about this theory suggests the djinn would be trapped. It's still free, obviously. All it has to do is link their fates and their deaths in line with Geralt's actual destiny and death; wish fulfilled, and djinn freed. 3. Your third 'problem' is merely a sub-problem from number 2. We know the djinn is free now.
@Aaron-wv5si

Yeah I had thought the same thing. Wishing to share Yen's fate and wishing for the Djinn to kill its master aren't at all the same thing. If he had wished to share her fate, that doesn't in any way give the Djinn permission to kill him if it does, in fact, need that permission.

Ladies and gentlemen... Geralt wish that he and Yennifer would live Happily Ever After. Not only does that make their fates forever intertwined...but it also fits with the fairy tail motif of the books. This also kept the djinn from killing them. Which is why when the onlookers found them, (I believe it was Dandelions point of view) they were surround by the wreckage of the building, but they were in the center of a circle on the ground with no debris or anything in it. This may have also affected their feeling for each other, for which there was already a draw to each other, but it might have strengthened it to another level.

I've not read the books but in the "Wild Hunt" game you can pick up a lore book called "The Last Wish" and it states and I quote "he asked the djinn to bind his fate to that of the arrogant yet intriguing sorceress from Vengerberg".

It's clear that Geralt bound his fate to Yennefer until she finds happiness which is why she said he condemned himself and why the Djinn laughed since they both knew she can't find happiness ever since she can't have a child but Geralt had Ciri in mind for Yennefer to raise her as her child...so the fate of all 3 is bonded together now and that's also why Ciri her first question to Geralt was "Who is Yennefer?" The series covered that quite good, never read the books.

What if he wished for them to help each other find their humanity. It keeps with both themes of humanity and freedom, both the freedom of becoming human and the freedom to discover the way to do that instead of explicitly wishing to become human. It would also tied their fates together because they are now forced to help each other. I want to know your thoughts on this theory.

that actually makes a lot of sense. I used to think that it was more like a "stay with me" thing with him wishing for yen to stay alive but because of the dijnn's meddling, it tied them together. In polish "chce aby Yen miala moje dziecko" sounds a bit off, but it's definitely plausible.

My Theory is that he wished for 'their fates to be inexorably linked'. It would sync up a LOT with what he'd just been through with the whole child surprise and destiny and whatnot. He would do this in equal parts to secure a mother for his child surprise, and because he loved her. This is MOSTLY the first option you said, only worded a bit more artfully/ better. Who intentionally includes their own death in their wish, afterall? would make MUCH more sense if he just said something about fate or destiny (both of which might _imply_ a dual death for them, but not necessarily)

I mean CDPR did not write the book or anything. But in the witcher 3 you get to resolve this quest and Geralts wish basically tied their fates together. Not cannon, but this is the first thing i thought when i played Witcher 3 also remember in the book Yennefer knows what he wished for so it probably means it was something stupid like that and not this in depth as you are going, since if he mentioned the child she would probably react differently.

Or he simply wished to be able to make her wish come true (i.e. that he gains the ability to fulfill her ultimate desire, not to have the genie grant it to her itself). That may sound to her like it's something impossible, it binds them together and explains why they fight all the time despite technically being soul mates.

I don't get why Geralt had to come up with some clever wish to keep the djinn from killing him and Yennifer or letting Yennifer have it. It's pretty straightforward to solve both problems. It seems like "I wish for you to go far away without harming either of us" would have done it.

I think that he wished for hard to be tied to him because the gen could not kill its master and if it would have killed her it would have killed him. So the wish was basically to stop gene from killing Yennefer but the only way he could do that was tie her to him.

Everyone thinks wishing Geralt and Yennefer to be together... doesn't make sense. Makes more sense that Geralt wished for the Dijnn to be FREE. Geralt mentions that "Dijnn's are only dark creatures when held captive". He goes on to say to Yennefer "When did you feel happy when you were trapped?". You saw the seal broken and dissappear and the Djinn destroying the roof and assending to the clouds above with his freedom. Makes sense from Geralt words that, now that its freedom was granted the Dijnn spared them. He is no longer captive and "a dark creature" that wants to inflict pain on those who use him.

The whole theme here is FATE. When Geralt wished for Yennefer's fate to be tied to his own, he tricked the genie, because now Yennefer could not be killed, since genies cannot kill their captors. And if you think about what happens in the end of the last Witcher book, it seems the genie fulfilled his wish to the T. If I recalled correctly, Geralt gives this answer verbally on one of the books
