They never should have deleted the footage of Judy Garland singing the heartbreakingly sad reprise of "Over The Rainbow" from the scene in the Wicked Witch of the West's castle. Although it is understandable that the producer and director of the film felt that that segment of the scene would be too upsetting to children watching the movie, that scene should have been left intact because it demonstrates Judy Garland's phenomenal acting ability.
@genewebb83964 жыл бұрын
and to think they didnt want her to sing this song period. it was undignified for her to sing such a song in a barmyard and that it slows the picture down. so glad they kept this in which made it a movie classic monent
@CharlieChilders-wm9gb4 жыл бұрын
As far as being too upsetting for the children to see and hear, the wicked witch was far more upsetting and also frightening to most of the children who saw the movie. My 10-year-old cousin would run out of the room whenever the witch came on. It would be very human and natural for the little children to watch and relate to Judy when she was crying and missing home and frightened. They would have gotten even more personally involved with Dorothy's character and the story (and the movie) Judy Garland would have been recognized very early on of her enormous acting talents and would have become an even greater star then instead of later! 😱🤔🤗😇💞♥️
@p.z.arnott23293 жыл бұрын
Also, it comes full circles on Dorothy's development. She at the beginning, want to escape when no one, especially Aunt Em, listens to her problems, to the point of escaping to a whole new place. But here, the song takes a whole new meaning of going over the rainbow back home

@ Long Gray Line. No question whatsoever that Judy Garland was the greatest female entertainer of all-time (with honorable mention of Barbra Streisand as the second greatest female entertainer of all-time). As far as the greatest male entertainer of all-time , that distinction goes to Al Jolson.

According to TV Tropes, Judy Garland’s performance of the reprise (which was recorded live on set) had the cast and crew in tears. It’s easy to se why. She never deserved to go through all the shit she dealt with during production, or all the issues she had later in life…

@@SpongeDan No, Judy Garland was placed on a strict diet by the MGM producers during her tenure with them. There was a constant struggle between her and them on when to eat, what to eat, and how much she could eat. She was often called fat, which as you can tell is completely untrue. She was also forced to take a lot of pills in order to keep up her energy to film movie after movie. That, along with the abuse by both producers and her mother, led to her developing a drug addiction that led to her life ending too soon.
@broadwaymike928 ай бұрын
Agreed. MGM mistreated her badly!!! Very Toxic work environment. Judy gave the most spectacular performances. Yes, that was done LIVE. So emotional.....When Judy started doing her concerts, she always would get emotional singing OVER THE RAINBOW live every time. Tons of audio recordings where she would let it all out especially towards the end.

There is reasons why MGM cut this, this would make this scene very difficult and heartbreaking for children. Especially when dorothy cries during the song and then cries help at the end. I know the crying help is in the movie definitely but the crying Over the Rainbow is definitely something for a Try Not to Cry Challenge in itself.
