Judy Garland sang this reprise live on set, before director Richard Thorpe was replaced by Victor Fleming and the song was cut. Margaret Hamilton is the witch, of course! "Hail! Hail! The Witch is Dead!" follows, and I've also included an alternate music tag for the end title.

I feel like they should have left this in the scene... hearing Judy sing it through tears is very moving and really gives you the feeling of the character being both scared and sad/missing home and her family... I maybe got a little emotional watching this recreation of the scene with it.

+HotWax93 CGI is at a point now where you could have a body double for Judy play out the scene on a recreation of the set, then create a MoCap image of Judy over the performer. The only thing is that it would probably be very expensive. The reprise is used in stage productions of the MGM musical.

Even as a kid, I always instinctively expected a reprise of "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead" right around this point in the movie, and have long wondered whether it ever occurred to the makers of the film that one might be a good idea. Good to know it was indeed once a part of the movie. I personally love how emotional this scene it was and wish it was included.

I agree, I wish they have left the Oz reprise right before they present the broom to the Wizard. This movie is sheer perfection, but I always felt the cut from the castle and their near death to standing in front of the Wizard for a second time seemed to blunt. It felt like we needed to come down from nearly seeing Dorothy and friends murdered in cold blood to seeing the Wizard again and I think a reprise of the song with entire Oz singing would have been a great transition - besides, it does look like it would have been a stunningly beautiful spectacle of a scene!

For some weird reason when I was a little girl, every time Judy Garland as Dorothy was in the castle scene crying I used to cry when she did every time that one scene happened in the movie when I watched it a billion times. I don’t know why I always cried and still cry at that scene, but I think it’s because her acting was so heartbreaking to hear her cry, it can make you emotional, just like today I still get emotional watching that scene. I read somewhere too she was crying in this take because she was thinking about her father that died four years earlier, which makes the scene even more emotional and sadder when you think about it. :( Poor Judy :( Everytime that scene happened I just wanted to jump through my TV screen to give her a hug. XD But I know it’s only a movie. XD One time I actually did hug my TV screen when she was crying in that scene talking to the TV saying “It’s okay Judy don’t cry”. XD But being a HUGE Judy Garland fan, she can make you cry, make you laugh, and make you want to dance when she did. :) I love her! =) R.I.P. Judy

@@amandatucker4643 You are aware that the movie was based on a 39 year-old book, right? There was no "red brick road" in the book, and the one in the movie ended at a little hill. The reason she took the Road of Yellow Brick was that it led to the City of Emeralds where the Wizard lived. No other reason. Those several people are wrong. There is absolutely no way this scene ever aired, as it was cut before the film's release. The footage was lost in the famous MGM vault fire of 1965. Also, this scene was only shot once, before George Cukor changed Judy's hair from blonde to brown. So if the footage was ever found and re-inserted, her hair would suddenly become blonde!

After firing Thorpe, Mervyn LeRoy told make-up to use Judy's own hair color (even though Dorothy is blonde in the books) and to give her a more natural complexion.

@@rextony22 In the Cowardly Lion's introductory scene, Judy kept getting giggle fits every time Bert Lahr would go into his crying routine. Time was wasting and Fleming was up against the wall, so he took Judy aside and slapped her so she'd get serious and do it right, which she did. He hated what he did, and confided it to someone else; Judy overheard and kissed him on the nose by way of forgiving him.

I'm concerned because I don't know if she's crying from being the great actor she was or because her agent and the director were continuously mistreating her on set! She would be slapped repeatedly for not doing things the way they asked

That is such a load of manure! Victor Fleming slapped her ONCE, when her repeated giggle fits ruined several takes of the Cowardly Lion's crying scene. She finished the scene, and then overheard Fleming telling someone to break his nose because he felt so horrible about what he'd done. She went over to him and said, "I won't break your nose, but I will kiss it!" And she did.

+Tiny Aylanz It happened. The term is "beside the point." Judy was no more mistreated than anyone in film in those days (treated better than some nowadays). And she was not "drugged" as in forced against her will; she was under a doctor's orders.

Broadway Classics I am obsessed w the wizard of Oz. I'm going to see it at the Fox Theater on November 25th in Detroit. Anyhow my question is is is there any way possible that I could purchase a copy somewhere even if it's a bootleg of the Madison Square Garden production it is on KZbin and I put it all together on one DVD but it's so blurry you can barely see it and I did purchase the Andrew Lloyd Webber one with Danielle Wade from the American Film Society and it was filmed from someone in the audience and through the whole tornado scene almost and a few other the camera dropped right to the floor I take it because the ushers were rushing by.... But I did not care for that production I like the Madison Square Garden or any Live Theater if you could give me some hints thank you

was this reprise ever included on any release? this was my favorite film as a kid. played on repeat over and over. i just rewatched it for the first time in at least 15 years and was surprised that there was no reprise of somewhere over the rainbow, or the crying scene over the crystal ball, or reprise of ding dong the witch is dead. i’m so confused because after some research i’m finding that these scenes were never actually released? how do i remember them so well when i’ve only seen old releases and have never searched out the audio? i’m not susceptible to mandela effects, so i’m genuinely wigged out. were they ever tacked onto a home release?

The reprise was never included in any release of the film. A different version, with different stills, was included as an extra on some DVDs, but never as part of the film itself. I made this version myself, so the only place to see it is here.

Dorothy is not a damsel in distress. For one, Dorothy was literally a child. It's understandable for her to get caught up in situations like the Witch's castle. If she was a damsel, she wouldn't have even gone to the Witch's castle at all. Plus, in the end, she's the one who saved all of the guys. She is the one who picked Scarecrow up and showed him that he was smart all along, and showed the Tin Man that he had a heart, and that the Lion was brave. She's really the savior of the story. The reprise is simply her feeling emotions.
