Nintendo has a very strange relationship with the adaptation of it's properties into film. Before the release of Super Mario Bros. in 1993 and even longer before The Super Marios Bros. Movie in 2023 the closest thing we got to on screen reputation was The Wizard. Basically serving as a promotion tool for the upcoming Super Marios Bros. 3 along with other Nintendo licensed products like the Power Glove, the Nintendo hotline, Zelda, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Contra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and more it certainly is a weird and roundabout way to promote something. Thanks for listening!

There wasn't a blue harvest joke in this video, but once I realized that, I reminded myself of the last Blue Harvest joke, where Nick said he knew it was coming, not by what James said but by the look in his eyes when he began the sentence and that alone made me laugh out loud.

When I worked at a Hollywood Video in the early 2000's we had a copy of this movie on VHS that was free to rent, and to this day I do not know why. It was the only movie in the entire store that was just free, we never once advertised it, it was just a thing people somehow knew about and would come in to rent on a regular basis. Banger movie, 10/10, also Rilo Kiley is a fantastic band (but not free as far as I know).

Did u know that the original Power Glove supposed to be Blue colored in order to emit how powerful it is? But Satoru Iwata head of Nintendo at the time rejected the idea due to the color blue is seen as too calming and thought that gamers would not want to play games that are calming. So he chooses a more neutral color which was grey but also retain the blue accent on the logo of the device. This might be a coincidence but Nintendo chose blue in the first place due to the fact its a reference to ‘Blue Harvest’ which was the title of the first Star Wars movie ……

This movie is woven deep into my childhood. I used that gaming hotline so much that I ran up a bill of a couple hundred dollars and got my ass properly kicked for it. Nintendo Power magazine was like playboy for me as a kid. I got damn near sexually excited whenever a new copy showed up. I also remember learning the location of the first warp whistle in Super Mario 3 from this movie. I remember seeing that moment and losing my mind.

Interesting addition to Green Trivia that explains why everyone says this movie is like Rain Man… this is a very very loose reboot of Tommy by the Who. The title gets its name from their song Pinball Wizard. But because of the iconic blue cover of Tommy, the producers did consider calling it Blue Harvest.

This movie is Little Miss Sunshine, Stand By Me and Rain Man all rolled into one movie marketed to kids to sell a video game. I saw this as a kid and loved it, even without the stupid video game contest as a plot device/whatever. Although video game contests were a real thing back then. Yes, viewed thru modern lenses with access to all the LCD flat screen displays on TVs, tablets, phones, the idea of watching something on an SD display (ugh) blown up to allow an audience to watch is unthinkable nowadays, it was a cool idea back in the 80s, when TVs really couldnt compete with theater level image definition.

There's a funny bit of irony in this being featured in a series called "Caravan of Garbage" - the inspiration Nintendo had for competitions like NWC which The Wizard was promoting was Hudson Soft's "Caravan" events, named after the giant yellow ride that would go on tour and let competitors play in, which started in 1982.

The marketing of this movie couldn't have worked better on me as a kid. I didn't realize at the time Super Mario 3 was going to be a real thing, so when the game was actually released just like it was from the movie, it made the movie seem so much more real to me. I still remember how excited I was when I discovered the warp whistle they revealed was actually a real thing you could do in the game. What a corporate funded magical time to be a kid.

In 1989 I was 9 years old and liked “The Wiz”. I was so excited to get a Power Glove and so disappointed after I bought it with my Christmas/Birthday money. Fast forward to 1995 and I was selected to play in a local Sega tournament (to market the Sega Channel). The game we would play was a mystery so I rented a ton of games from Blockbuster Video. When the day came the Video Game Gods were kind to me. We played Sonic 3 which is one of my all time favorite games. I absolutely crushed it! I won a family trip to Universal Studios including airfare and hotel for all four members of my family. The trip was fun. The greatest part was for a year afterwards I had a rock solid excuse to play “just 15 more minutes” when every it was time to turn off the game.

Bit of fun trivia: Bad Business Dad is played by Sam McMurray, who played an uptight FBI agent in the Brian Bosworth action vehicle "Stone Cold". Bosworth played for the Seattle Seahawks, known for their distinctive dark blue uniforms. So much so, that when he received his career ending injury, it was known as the "Blue Harvest", which coincidentally was the working title of the original Star Wars!

All movies back then had nothing going on in the intro. There was a reason they did that, and did a list of casting. It does a lot, to make a movie more enjoyable in the theater. This was people showing up late or just on time don't miss anything, but at the same time, doesn't let the people who got there early to miss anything as well. It also gives people time to settle in. Now they show ads for half an hour, than trailers for 10 to 15 minutes.
