I can solve the WNBA's biggest problem with one simple rule change, but why is the league so afraid to make it?

The "attendance" numbers are skewed by all the thousands of tickets that are given away or purchased by the front office of a team. Paying people to attend games is never going to work. Also, women need to buy tickets, not just a handful of men.

Women are the last ones to want to watch. Most of my friends are women. Just the nature of my work. I actually asked them if they were interested in watching the WNBA. We have a team in our state. They even won whatever their championship is. All seven of the women I asked just kinda giggled at the idea. Three didn’t even know what it was, and didn’t care when they learned. The ONE I was positive was a fan, because she played in high school and coached for a while too, admitted she didn’t like it at all. She watches the NBA because it’s “a way better game.” So… I can’t see how this league can survive. If even basketball players don’t respect it, you have nothing to sell.

The biggest reason the NBA took so long to take off was television was limited to 3/4 channels only, even your home team wasn't on TV. Cable TV came out in the late 70's and the rest is history.

That’s great and all except your information is incorrect and misleading. - The NBA has a 90% stake in the WNBA which is why they are footing the bill for an average of -$10 million per year. - The WNBA is hemorrhaging money. - (even if your revenue information were correct) any business model that takes 20 years for less than half of their businesses to have a profit for that one year or is horrible and would’ve long gone under. - Because the WNBA is in the red every single year, a woman making $100,000 is a substantially bigger percentage of the pay vs the percentage of money the NBA players make. - All the people watching women’s basketball in the Olympics were absolutely not watching because of the WNBA. They were watching because they watched the Olympics. - The actual attendance numbers for the WNBA are also on a decline every year. - The majority of the teams (if not all of them) have either already moved/or are moving to a much smaller facility because they’re not filling the seats and it is costing them way too much money to rent out the bigger venues.
@goombapizza6335

And also because playing in mostly-empty venues makes the team look less popular, which makes people want to go there even less, so it becomes a vicious cycle.

I TRIED to watch the WNBA....I really did, but when I realized I had a Much Better time watching Women's College Ball. That's when I realized "Me and MY Misogyny" wasn't the problem. The Problem was & Is The WNBA's Level Of Play. None of the teams seem the least bit interested in Upping Their Game by introducing NEW PLAYERS> It's The Same Old Roster Year in and Year Out. In what universe does this make sense? Why would a "Average" team not be out actively recruiting New Talented Players? These Women are Out There, ut nobody seems interested in adding them to their Bench. Oh Hell No! They keep the same old Tired "Air Ball Specialists" lumbering up nd down the courts FOR YEARS & YEARS.......WHY? I came to the conclusion that the WNBA is a "Girls Club" With members who have The Same "Proclivities" Off The Court, and they stay until "They" not the Franchise, decide to retire or just Quit. I saw one WNBA player say "Offhand" that "Nobody really retires" as if that's a Good Thing???? In Any Sport, if you aren't looking to Grow, but only look to keep the Status Quo, that team Stagnates & Becomes Worse, not better..............Witness Today's WNBA. Take an honest look at the "Star" Players along with the Bench Warmers. NONE of these Women look "Toned & Fit". You know like they Put In The Work to Up Their Level Of Athleticism, and Playing Ability......What I see is a bunch of Flaccid, Lazy, and Unconcerned Women Lumbering Up & Down The Court, without a care in the world. When one of the "Hot Dogs" makes a silly looking attempt at a Basket & Either Air Balls It, or simply Misses The Bucket, they are Congratulated by team mates and seem totally Fine with their Miserable Effort. Not to be Rude, But these Current "WNBA Super Stars" remind me more of the Stereotype DMV workers(Or Most Government Employees, who know they cannot be fired, no matter how dismal their job performance is). It's as if they know they won't even be criticized let alone Benched, Traded or Fired, no matter how Bad their performance is. Picture THIS WNBA AD that says................ "Yeah, we may Suck, but we're gonna keep on Sucking, without doing a single thing to improve our performance, BUT You have to watch and support us Anyway, and BTW Pay Us More Money, Or You're All Sexists, Homophobes, Racists And Misogynists"..........Coming Soon To A TV Near You

The talent gap between the best and everyone else is so huge that these women can play these sports for decades without being pushed out by younger players. It's way more complicated of a topic than what both sides argue. Things like lowering rims is so retarded of a suggestion, that I'm almost convinced that it's said in jest... and this is usually suggested by people who wouldn't go to an WNBA game, even if all their critiques were implemented. You have to have money to eliminate the salary cap, and your problem is in the fact the league doesn't turn a profit. Having big brother bail you out all the time is not a long term solution, so the league needs to figure out how to get more butts in seats... because they're currently not.

Its a culture issue. The league has come into form based on screaming about parity and equality. The WNBA as an organization and as individual pieces has stood so strong on equality that shifting the view towards that of competition would be a betrayal. I think they understand that it could be viewed as hypocritical so they are hesitant to make the move. This can be viewed in several other league bettering decisions that they refuse to make.

Football wasn’t the monster you see today, in late 70s MLB was king until the strikes literally ruined the sport. Took mcwuire soda historic home run chase to reignite mlb interest and baseball didn’t care about steroids thier bigger always been amphetamines which heighteneds your vison and focus which are particularly qualities when you’re trying to hit and catch a base ball in bright sun. Amphetamines been an issue since the 1950s and have more impact than peds ever did. Doesn’t matter how strong you are if you can’t baseball you’re not going to hit baseball after taking peds you still need talent. Good hitters will hit mediocre players will not. Like football it didn’t take off until after Dwight Clark’s “catch” was main nfl opening promional bit for 30 years. In 80s Super Bowl once was at Tulane stadium tickets were 10.00 wasn’t even televised live. Started to take an upswing with raiders Steelers rivalry in 1977 but tv didn’t take off until bill walsh built those offensive entertaintaining forty niners thing was there defense was much better. Afterctozelle passed torch taglibue who had an attorney working on media deals for him Comcast named Goodell. Later he as commissioner Goodell signed. Largest North American sports deal at the time and been making money at unprecedented levels for nfl. If anyone secure in his job it’s Goodell the way lines pockets of nfl ownership no matter how they may disagreement. Bottom line rules every calculation in a billionaires world. Baseball fell simply due to weak leadership since day Vincent was ousted. Right now who is worst commissioner Manfred or that guy who runs nba. Won’t say his name he done such a horrible job.

Lol; True; I like Women's College Basketball, though some games are hard to Watch; Easier 2 skirt around it & get decent quality vs the WNBA, which to Your Point, is Very Hard to look @; I did check out a bit of the last game of the Finals, but the prime/ only reason I'd watch any game this season is 2 see CAITLIN CLARK; Can she save the WNBA? Maybe; Tough Task; The League doesn't bundle the Int'l leagues for Players / audience to see, and / or have a solid system in place that: A; Keeps College Players in the News by: B: Expanding, choosing a Number of teams / Games, take the un-chosen Clubs, make a 2nd league, w/ those teams C: developing players for their A-Team and / or free market trading w/ teams in both leagues, and D: toss in a Int'l Soccer style Relegation / Promotion System; Bottom 2 WNBA teams go Down to League 2, Top 2 WNBA 2 teams Move up; Though the product, as you stated may still be Lower- level, this would E: salvage/ save some face & create interest w/ College Players that disappear; The hunch is the Product is Sub-Par because F: there aren't enough good players competing in a League that's too small... CONCLUSION The other issue to further your point is the "No-Dunk" Factor, therefore you're probably 99.9% Correct that... even if the ideas I've suggested have or haven't been posed, who has or hasn't considered it / the Product to be a worthy Investment of the Time & Money?

The hard cap is a huge problem, but the biggest problem is the Commissioner. She is, based on her past work with Deloitte, a good businesswoman, bit not a good Sports Businesswoman. Business is business, but there is still a difference between running Deloitte and running a sports league. She is too afraid and cautious, nothing like David Stern, and too concerned with pleasing her employers (the owners) and maintaining their pockets than the Players, the people who fans actually pay money to see. As long as she is the Commissioner, the league will not grow or will not grow at a pace it should be, and will not capitalize on momentum and good opportunities.

Women's basketball in college and internationally is well marketed and popular. The problems for WNBA are basically based on two things audience and sponsors/owners. You can have low ratings for nearly 25 year's not able to extend and improve your audience which predominately is older man, players and family members and expect the league to progress. There is not one superstar in WNBA which i can say that casual fans are following. Then let's talk about the owners/sponsors how you can spend money and not expect any returns and lose money on regular bases. There is no way anyone with brain will want to own a WNBA franchise in any city. Most of the current owner's own a NBA franchises to and many want to sell their WNBA teams .The reason not profitable.

The business may merge with another business and come under new management or in the case of real estate a building might be repurposed and then become profitable. I honestly thought you were going to say something like lower the height of the rings, reduce the length but widen the width of the key or bring in the three point arc as ways to make the WNBA a better game. Getting rid of the salary cap and making the league one sided and even more unattractive never even crossed my mind.

There is nothing, NOTHING they can do to make this league relevant. The handful of fans can plead their case all they want, the shit ain't going anywhere. The more tantrums they have, the more fans will fart at it. All these years later and their finals are still best of 5. They should feel grateful to be able to play a professional sport and get paid for it.

Tyler, first time seeing your channel and I have to say regarding the analysis of this league seems way off. Although, in the end I don't think it would hurt to try your idea as I think it leads to the same conclusion, the league folds without the NBA support. The one thing I would agree with is they definitely need to market the stars vs. the teams. Comparing this league where it is with emergence of the NBA is not even in the same realm. The WBNA had the extreme advantage of people being interested in basketball, financial support from the NBA, technology to get the product into the hands of as many people as possible. With those advantages this league should have been completely self sufficient and making a good deal of money a long time ago if it was a good package. I believe I have the answer of what is wrong with this league. From what I saw, there is ZERO difference from the NBA, EXCEPT the talent level is so un-godly low compared to the NBA. This year I watched approximately 10 games of the regular season and probably another 10 games in the playoffs including 2 of the finals games (yes I lost a bet, but I also did want to see what the complaining is about). I can clearly state the WNBA players don't pass the eye test. I have "X" amount of time in my life why in world would I watch a vastly inferior play compared to the NBA and in turn purchase merch or spend $$ go to a game live? They have another issue; the women in this league are obnoxious a*holes IMO. Don't get me wrong there are a plenty of NBA players that meet that qualification and worse, but holy crap the least talented NBA player has more talent in his shoe laces compared to the best WNBA player. I am 6' 2" in my 50s and 40lbs overweight and I can still dunk better than 99% of the WNBA, because 99% of them can't dunk. Think about that a minute. I am so far past my prime I can't even recognize myself and yet the explosion (what remains) can still go above the rim better than they can. I am not saying I can beat the pro women now, but there is absolutely nothing these ladies are doing that I know I could do better at least as good at same age they are. My uncle played in the NBA and I can say on my best day I was not worthy of holding his sweat towel in ability in playing the game. I can at least watch the NBA because it amazes me what they can do and I know I could never touch that. At least the ladies that started in the league were decent people for the most part and I could at least cheer for them for that, nowadays, forget it.

I'd be interested to see stats on the injury and missed games percentages between the NBA and the WNBA. Could the reason the WNBA leaves a spot open is because they are trying to save money on salaries since they don't need as many reserves to cover for injuries. With the weight and strength disparities, perhaps the severity of injuries is not as devastating in the WNBA. I'd also speculate that the WNBA can more easily pick-up a replacement than the NBA since women players have less places to play if they are cut by a WNBA franchise.

The women's game is much closer to what basketball at its core is, and doesnt emphasize flashiness. It's kinda like comparing college football. group of 5 schools to power 5. Granted, its men all the way, but the talent gap between the two causes the group of five style of play to be much more different and arguably more entertaining from a simple "art of the sport" view, because the teams aren't loaded with freaks of nature who do crazy things and have pounded weights since they were 12

the reason the league gets bashed is because the players are delusional and entitled. In addition, what's not mentioned in the video is the the NBA in the early days was not being subsidized. They operated within their means. After 26 years the WNBA has made not $1 in profit. It's on average $10M a year. The NBA subsidizes it every year. That with ESPN continuously shoving the league down the throats of it's viewers. The early NBA did not have that. The league has never turned a profit, the league has always been subsidized, the league gets high visibility, yet the players complain about rage gas and other perks they don't get when in reality the league should've folded 20 years ago. No other professional league of any sport has ever had the longevity of the WNBA without turning a profit. All other leagues in this condition fold within 3-4 years. It's the arrogance and lack of reality awareness by the players that turn men off and motivate them to bash. Here's the other HUGE issue that they never speak of. Women don't support the WNBA! The average WNBA consumer is the middle to older than middle aged man. Success for them lies with the female market. And the bottom line is most females simply aren't into professional sports like men. They don't spend the same amount of money on it, they don't meet in bars to watch the game, they don't gather in homes to watch the game, they don't bet on the game like men do. So the WNBA is in a hard spot. They are competing with other male professional sporting options for eyeballs. And men for the most part aren't interested in watching women behave like men.

The solution took about a minute to think of. Each team needs a junior varsity team. They can play about a 30-minute game before each game. Raise ticket prices one or two dollars to cover the additional expense. Fans arrive a little earlier. eat an extra hot dog. drink an Extra beer. You can imagine all the benefits of the baseball farm system. And the speculation about young players coming up to the big leagues. Or being sent down. But without all that additional expense of an entirely separate League. Young players get to practice with the vets. Step up in case of injuries. And play real, entertaining games in front of fans. And you can just add a couple of assistant coaches not have to have an entire coaching staff and Administration.

I've always thought the biggest part of the problem was the WNBA season was played in the Summer. I think the WNBA and NBA teams should share an arena and schedule games on different nights during the "traditional basketball season - winter." NBA could be scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday, WNBA on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday...and then on Sundays they could BOTH play...one would get the day game and the other a night game. There should also be more WNBA teams. Every NBA team could "sponsor" a WNBA team....then there would be more opportunities in the USA for great female BB players coming out of college. The salary cap should be removed and the players should also get the same perks NBA players get...private flights...high-quality hotels for away games...etc...etc... IMHO :)

Honestly, I think the biggest issue for the WNBA on-court game is hand-size. Physiologically speaking, women usually have significantly smaller hands than men. Why does this matter? A lot of what makes the NBA so exciting (fast, fluid shots, one-handed dunks, acrobatic layups, put-backs, etc) are often done using one hand, especially the stars. The ability to control the basketball is critical and this is heavily predicated on your hand-size. I know this very well as a smaller guy that plays recreationally. Having small hands is much tougher to overcome than height. I can find ways to create space against a taller player through dribble moves, off ball movement, etc. I can't make my hands bigger to control the basketball more easily. It makes a big difference. When I need to shoot, both my hands have to be precisely positioned just to raise the ball, otherwise I risk losing control. I see similar shot form from a lot of WNBA players and that's what makes me believe that the hand-size plays a bigger role than height. It also precludes you from some of the acrobatic layups because, with a smaller hand, you can't control the ball as well one-handed. Add into that female disadvantages in height and musculature and the WNBA just really suffers. Basketball is heavily predicated on certain aspects of physique, aspects where women are physiologically disadvantaged compared to males. The female game just looks slower, more awkward and with less variation and style between how players shoot the ball. For me personally, I just don't think basketball is a great sport for females. Physiologically, women just lack the hand-size, height and leaping ability that make the NBA game enjoyable to watch. This is in contrast to other sports where women are able to compete just as well as males within their own league, without the game looking significantly different. I can watch women's soccer and see most of what I would see in a men's game. This makes it exciting, fun and I have enjoyed watching the US Women compete and win on the world stage. Arguably, it was the US Women's team that put the US on the map for soccer. Similarly, women's MMA can have a lot of the same things that I love about men's MMA (though in fairness, I'm more into watching technique than pure knockout power). Still, you had females who, within their weight class, were absolute powerhouse strikers. The WNBA doesn't have this. The game looks massively different from the men's game, to the point that there are more similarities between an AAU game and the NBA than the WNBA and the NBA.

If the women's game had "too many good players and not enough roster spots", then only the most talented players would get those roster spots. This would mean a higher quality of play on the court; that is OBVIOUSLY not happening. And lowering the rim doesn't increase the talent either.

In Denmark we have competing clubs ALL OVER the country. Though small (7 mil), we have sooo many clubs where you for a very small fee (depending on the sport) can practice 2-4 times a week. Coaches for these teams are not getting paid, and if they are it's symbolic usually. All these teams are playing in leagues if they want to. It seems to me that there are as many teams as players can fill up. Never heard of anyone being told to go home because there is no room on a team.

You can only market an athlete to a point. Once people watch them play and are bored by their game, they don't care how many times they saw them in a Gatorade commercial. WNBA has been pushing all their players on us for years and it's barely bumping up viewership. I hate to say it but 1) the best female hoopers don't go into the WNBA, because there's no money there; 2) the WNBA is boring to watch; 3) the three solutions would be to A) pay better money so the best players play in the league so it becomes a more exciting league; B) lower the damn rim to fit women's smaller size and vert; or C) sexualize the league by making uniforms smaller/tighter/more revealing, but that would never fly (nor should it, ethically), and 80% of women who play pro basketball are not the type of women that anybody's interested in seeing in short shorts anyway.

I living in Orlando and born 1967, we had a good rec center and a packed court every day. From the age of 7, if I wasn't at football practice; the neighborhood kids and I were on the court busting each others noses. The Harlem Globetrotters seemed to be on Wide Wide World every sunday, but we didn't pay much attention to the NBA. Then Darryl "Choclate Thunder" Dawkins got drafted straight from Evens High (Orlando) to the 76ers. The local station started playing all the Philadelphia games on delay (11:30pm). I had a 12" black and white tv in my room and would watch all of them with sound off. I could hear my mom watching Johnny in the den. Then a few years later cable tv was brought to centeral Florida. WGN had the Bulls, WTBS had the Hawks, USA network had Knicks and others. All of a sudden, Magic, Dr. J, Kareem, Byrd, The Ice Man, Moses Malone, The Cheif, Bill Walton and all the others of the 1980-81 NBA were being talked about at the court. I think the #1 reason the NBA took off was cable TV. Without that, we wouldn't have access to seeing the "stars".

Very insightful... They must remove the salary cap and max salary restrictions. And lower the minimum salary. This will make it like European sports. Not only will this give owners more freedom to run a team the way they want... It'll also help reverse some of the damage done by all the "equal pay" controversy, since now all negotiations will be directly between players and owners. Things like hotels and flights should be entirely on the owners... If they can afford luxury, go for it! It'll incentivize them to make more money. At this point, you shouldn't worry about competitive balance. Have 2-3 good teams who can draw in loads of fans (kinda like La Liga). Once you're making good money, then introduce salary caps, max salary etc.
