The chap Finton refused to discuss the terrible atrocities that the Oranges had done, and tried his best to do the Wolfetones down, but I think they are a brilliant band. I attended a gig last year in Dublin and they were very friendly and nice to talk to, especially Brian.

In the 90's Tony Blair wrote a formal letter of apology on behalf of the British government .He recognized his country's responsibility for the genocide of the famine years. Over a million died and a million more were forced to leave or starve to death. Every time the argument is made that the IRA is the aggressor it is invalidated by over 800 years of British aggression.

@@Cash4gold84 …. Cmon do your history here mate. That was in the big master plan to make the whole state of Ireland Protestant. The brits secretly poisoned the crops and then Britain brought tons loads fresh food and supplies etc. to Ireland to make them seem like this lovely courteous and god like nation. They then gave it to the starving and suffering but only in return of them joining the Protestant Church or better known as ‘taking the soup’ .

When history is forgotten it is bound to be repeated. Much of Irish History has been carried on in song, the good the bad and the ugly. Irish history is what it is. I saw in Ennistymon a tombstone that read here lies(forget the name) killed with his 3 daughters by the English army. 1921.Obscure but poignant reminder of Irish suffering at the hands of the English. My son-in-law from Warrenpoint tells of the violence growing up. He's 38 yhears old.May peace last forever, history told straight

"Choosing to ignore" was a theme Pat and Fintan brought up here. They choose to ignore that there was a very simple solution that would have prevented bloodshed. Not invading someone else's country and imposing foreign rules of law. That applies back to the Normans. In more recent times the Troubles flared up because the nationalists in the north had literally no other option. Sickening to hear west Brits mock Joe McDonnell in this debate. There's a powerful line in it about the Brits: "And you dare to call me a terrorist, while you look down your gun, when I think of all the deeds that you have done. You have plundered many nations, divided many lands, you have terrorised their peoples and ruled with an iron hand, and YOU BROUGHT THIS REIGN OF TERROR TO MY LAND" To go back to an earlier point Joe McDonnell wasn't a victim either, he was of the bravest of the brave.

It's utterly ridiculous to expect the Tones to write a song supporting Orangism or Loyalism which is what O'Toole is actually implying that they should do. Like most public figures in Ireland, they cannot publicly say they supported the PIRA or they'd beattacked, and O'Toole knows that, he's totally disingenious. When he speaks of "atrocities," why doesn't he write an article about Free State atrocities during the Civil War? Those have done more to promote the IRA than the Wolfe Tones ever did.

I was brought up in a Protestant community in Northern Ireland and so have become immersed in the political outlook which runs parrallel. Many people in both communities have long since lost interest in there respective churches. When asked Do you believe in God? I am honest enough to say no. My statement above was made along socio-political lines in keeping with context. It was not intended as a declaration of christianity. But your point was a fair one Tollundwoman. Good call. William

"no one has ever written a song celebrating Bloody Sunday" Mister respectable journalist over here has never heard of Loyalist ballads. "Up to our necks in Fenian blood" could be a brand of soup to Fintan for all he knows. In fact below I have copied in a song from a UDA Long Kesh detainee's songbook: ""Sunday morning went for a drive, Took along my Colt 45, Hey Hey Hey, what a beautiful day, Went to Derry not on a hunch, Knew I'd get a taig before lunch, Hey Hey Hey, it's a beautiful day. Bang Bang Bang, Bloody Sunday, This is my, my, my, beautiful day, When I say, say, say, Bloody Sunday, I mean my, oh, my, What a beautiful day. Taigs were marching like on the Falls, I opened up from old Derry's Walls, Hey Hey Hey, what a beautiful day, Taigs to army said it was you, Didn't know that I was there too, Hey Hey Hey, it's a beautiful day." I don't know how anyone could take that sort of attitude and revelry in state-inflicting suffering peaceably. The way Fintan always goes on about the IRA smacks of either ignorance or (self-)hatred.

So, the Enniskillen Remembrance Day bombing, which the IRA immediately said was a mistake and for which Gerry Adams apologized on behalf of the Republican Movement in 1997, means, according to Fintan O'Toole, that nobody is allowed in good conscience to sing about Irish history or Irish Republican successes and grievances?

I just watched it again. Fintan says the Helicopter Song is about the IRA, Brian chuckles and says sarcastically "hahaha that's about the IRA.." (the context of Brian's reply is to say Fintan is stupid to think the Helicopter Song is about the IRA.) Brian then says: "you give me poor examples there..." (suggesting none of the songs Fintan lists are about the IRA. Watch and listen again.

Does that mean then that the Brits, in light of the thousands of civilian deaths they caused in the bombing campaign in WW2, as one example, shouldn't in good conscience be allowed to sing songs of welcome to their troops returning home? Or that I, as an American, should not in good conscience be allowed to praise our fine men and women in unform in song because of some atrocity, imagined or otherwise, in history? I think not. Fintan O'Toole is wrong.

I never even implied they caused the troubles, but I agree those songs are a reflection of those times. Those times when two communities were killing each other tit for tat. Now we are all trying to build new times and a new future and those songs don't help that process. You have to let go of the past if you want a new future. And those songs stir people up, just like loyalist songs stir up republicans. There best left where they belong - in the past.

@MrBmw714 If the british wanted to oppress people in NI they would not have introduced reform after reform giving catholics more rights. They would not have tried to set up a power-sharing assembly between catholics and protestants at sunningdale in 1973. They would not have outlawed descrimination on religious grounds, they would not have set up a fair employment agency in 1975. torture and killing of civilians happen in war but these things were illegal.

@jonoessex England reacted way too late. How many were already dead, on both sides, by the time England responded to the very problems it created? Initially England tried to strong-arm the Irish. PIRA thrived as a result. Can't blame Irish youths for thinking the IRA was the only way after Ballmurphy, Bloody Sunday, etc. You say the IRA realized it couldn't win? England wasn't winning either. Nobody won. It wasn't a soccer game. Atleast today it is closer to being a fair democracy.

I have opposed "them and us" mentality for years. I try and discourage you protestants from the trap of sectarianism. However, groups such as the Wolf Tones make this an impossible task. I enjoy friendships with many catholics and respect everyones freedom of speach. But daring to voice an alternative opinion almost got one guy in the audience lynched. freedom of speech should be for all Irish people, not just those who support(ed) PIRA.
