I swear, this is the most creative internet show host I've seen in my years on this site. I was missing Andy's reviews. These movies (like Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, Dracula Untold, etc) bomb because Hollywood still don't get it. Classic horror movies are not action movies, is the suspense, intrigue, subtle horror and psychological tension that make them good. That's something that the creators of Penny Dreadful and the people that make the 90s remakes (like Jack Nicholson's Wolf) get it.

Bit late, but Van Helsing never tried to be scary, it's closer to a gothic themed Indiana Jones than anything else. Also the Dracula in this version goes for the Nicolas Cage route of acting, and it's awesome XD

I'm with you on this one. While the Remake isn't perfect, it's hardly bad when you compare it to other remakes. The Makeup makes the Wolfman look extremely intimidating and gives plenty of reason to be afraid of him. I also liked the atmosphere and setting design. Honestly wasn't expecting you to tackle this one in the near future but glad you got around to trying it.

In my opinion, while not connected to the Wolfman franchise, An American Werewolf in London was a much better written and scarier update to the classic werewolf genre both in characters and psychological elements (being haunted by undead Jack, yikes). I won't fault this remake for its inability to use practical effects amidst troubled development, but the characters in general just didn't get me invested. The twist with Anthony Hopkins as a werewolf honestly felt increasingly obvious as the plot progressed (the brief yellow glint of his eyes early in one scene practically gives it away). As Andy said, it's not a disaster of a film, but I consistently enjoy Werewolf in London more. Now, the sequel in Paris, that one can go s*** silver! On another note, The Crazies, do The Crazies next PLEASE :D

Out of all of the remakes Universal put out (especially the Tom Cruise Mummy movie *shutters*) I really enjoyed the hell out of this one. Why Universal can’t just make remakes tonally consistent with their original movies with updated scares is beyond me. Dracula Untold 🤢 I Frankenstein/ Victor Frankenstein 🤮 just give us these classics the way they were meant to be. I don’t need remakes but if you’re gonna do it at least make it close to the classics. This one felt pretty solid. Love Benicio’s makeup effects and the setting. The kills were also pretty badass.

the Wolfman series is my favorite. knee about the release date and the Nazi inspiration. did my own review but opted not to mention that fact. I had my own theory and everyone I told it agreed. the films always portrayed humans as superior and besting nature with hunts or psychological analysis. the Wolfman curse is nature reminding you that you are not superior to nature, underneath the facade still lurks the animal we really are. the Wolfman is humanity at it's most primeval. we can try act like we are superior, but deep down we want to take what we want, express our animalistic desires, and reconnect with nature. the Wolfman reminds us that nature still have a hold of us, and all we can do is adapt or die.

Thanks! The list has some of those, but those are mostly comic adaptations and they've been adapted multiple times over the years. For instance 6 different actors have played a live-action Batman/Bruce Wayne in 20 years. Batman Begins isn't a remake of any certain Batman movie, it's just a new Batman movie. It's a little trickier than say The Hills Have Eyes and it's remake.
