I agree about zombies being able to run when they are freshly dead then slowing down the longer they are dead. Just as long as they aren't jumping around superhumanly (I'm looking at you WWZ).
@koppsr8 жыл бұрын
i guess its always depending on personal perception. to me, slow zombies are terrifying, and menacing, because their robotic, krude movement underlines them being walking corpses in my eyes. and i TOTALLY agree, the "zombies" in WWZ were so ludicrous, i almost left the theater when they appeared the first time. but then again that movie is WWZ in name only so....

(And just how DO the fast ones take in enough calories for all that energetic activity? They obviously eat only a few nibbles of any given human's flesh, since most every victim remains intact enough to change into yet another fast zombie with endless hypercharged physical capability despite no visible source of metabolic fuel. These goons sneak a Red Bull Big Gulp whenever ain't nobody looking or wha? Hrmm....) Here are my personal opinions on Andy's review, feedback is welcome: 1. Characters- I actually think it was more realistic to develop the characters by letting their actions define them more than their dialogue. It prioritizes telling the story through the experience itself (The intro in particular sets up this tone well), because that's closer to how a group of strangers in a disaster scenario would likely act. They wouldn't spend the majority of their time socializing. They would focus on survival, safety, sanity, and planning their next move to get out of this situation. When they realize there's no help coming, they simmer down into a mundane imitation of everyday life similarly to the original. However, they also appreciate things more rather than perpetuating the metaphor of consumerism, something zombies already symbolize. The remake's style and narrative are more about showing than telling, which the original arguably neglected through too much talking. 2. Zombies- Considering the influence of 28 Days Later, which is in some respects the "British Dawn of the Dead", it's no surprise today why the remake modernized zombies similarly. It can also be considered inspiration for the more intimidating "virus" premise of recent years replacing vague supernatural causes. This break from the traditional Living Dead actually played a substantial role in the revival of zombie media in the later 2000's, a big contributor being video games. Having said that, I agree that freshly turned zombies being able to run but slowing down over time as they rot would have made more sense. 3. Plot- The original's ending would have been more provocative, to me, if Peter had escaped with Francine only to be revealed hiding a small bite but silently debating whether to tell her. I totally agree that the remake would have given more logical incentive to leave the mall if it had been attacked by other survivors such as the truck group Ana and company helped inside the mall out of concern. The irony when they later turned on them would have been palpable. I don't know if making C.J. the villain would have been smart, simply because it would have been too obvious, but Michael or Glen making decisions that gradually unhinge them over time would have had potential for an impacting twist. Imagine Michael of all people killing Kenneth out of survival, going insane, and then obsessing over Ana after she refused his advances? How many would have called that from the start? 4. Message- While I agree that the remake doesn't modernize Romero's moral effectively, I don't think it needed to. Yes, it has little in common with the original apart from the title and references, but perhaps that was the point all along. As Andy said, both films are a reflection of their time, the original's being consumerism. You could argue that 2004's version comments more on how unprepared we are for disaster, how quickly reality can turn on us, and how little thought we sometimes give to our future until after it's taken from us (Perhaps alluding to post- 9/11). Again, the intro plays well to this because it offers those exact feelings from the characters' perspectives, especially Ana in dealing with her sudden loss and Andre contemplating being a father. Overall, both films are exceptional in their own right, each taking its own direction and ultimately standing out more for it.

I liked the remake on account that it scared me more than the original. I only had two problems with it. While the idea of running zombies was a nice touch, the zombies still run after days and weeks of being in decay, which only made it too confusing (even World War Z suffers the same problem). And they seemed to only feast on human flesh and ONLY human flesh. Animal flesh, like dog, is ignored for unknown reasons.
@MisterRlGHT8 жыл бұрын
Do yourself a HUGE favor -- read the brilliant novel World War Z by Max Brooks and erase the barely related movie from your memory. No shit, the screenwriter looked at the novel's cover painting & then wrote the movie "adaptation" without ever opening the book or even reading the description on the back. I am not kidding. What sucks even more is how the movie sucked up so much Hollywood oxygen, it'll be many years before anybody mounts another crack at adapting it (tho ideally based on the actual novel next time). Seriously, friends, the Bradz Pittz character coulda just boarded that fucking transport plane with his team and then sat on the tarmac for half an hour or so while he and his Hindoo pal worked out that exact same solution, thus reclaiming those other 2 hours of CGI busywork for every one of us to spend in worthier ways. @@jhhone Actually authors rarely get that much money from film adaptions, usually because they don't understand how the film industry works on a financial level, and end up being screwed over in the contracts they sign. F.ex they often sign a deal that gives them a certain percentage of the net profit (movies technically don't make much money, at least not in net profit, due to various accounting loop holes meant to avoid paying certain taxes etc.) instead of the gross profit which is what they should have demanded. Now I don't know if Max Brooks made a good deal or not, but depending on the contract he signed with the film studio it's not entirely a given he got rich off of it.
@Amber_xo_1333 жыл бұрын
Although he had strong reservations about some elements, George A. Romero professed to be surprisingly impressed with the film. The two zombies with missing limbs (the jogger missing an arm and the legless zombie in the parking garage) were both played by actual amputees. The same thing was done for one of the first zombies seen in the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) While they are stocking up on ammunition in the gun store, the music from the gun store in the original film can be heard playing very lightly in the background. Zack Snyder said that the reason his zombies run at full speed is because he wanted to avoid the inherent comic impression given by slow, shuffling undead. The same technique was used to show the Infected in 28 Days Later... (2002), which was a direct inspiration for this film. Universal significantly slashed the film's budget after the failure of House of the Dead (2003), fearing there was no public appetite for zombie movies. Most of the zombie makeup was modeled after real and gruesome forensic photos. Zack Snyder's feature film directorial debut. According to director Zack Snyder, Starbucks Coffee refused to be featured in the film. Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in the Nightmare on Elm Street series was a member of the production crew on this film. The cause of the dead returning to life is not completely explained in the film. On the back of the DVD box, it is said to be a virus. The end credits footage on the dock was shot in a "lake" area on the Universal Studio Tour. David Cronenberg's sister, Denise Cronenberg, was the costume designer on this film. The zombie baby scene was originally going to portray the baby killing the mother. It was altered due to its graphic nature. The movie takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the end, the characters take a boat into what is assumed to be Lake Michigan. They go to an island that has tropical trees on it, in Lake Michigan. They painted Bruce Bohne ribs, to make him look scrawnier and hungrier. Though it was never specified in the movie, the character of Glen (R.D. Reid) supposedly died of a broken neck. The first scene in the basement finishes when Michael burns the zombies with fuel from the gas station and CJ's lighter. This is a reference to a similar scene in George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968). The ending of the movie continues throughout the credits by a series of brief video clips.

Wow I've seen the remake like 20 times through the years and had no idea James Gunn wrote it. That might explain why it's one of the few Zach Snyder movies I love. Another thing that was so good here was the song selection. This is by far one of the best remakes in existence. And that slow motion clip of Andy having explosive diarrhea is what Snyder did to the DC universe.

only257 depends on what you like in a movie, the original is the better overall movie but the remake is better in the horror/action department and has the better zombie effects (seriously, the zombies from the original look like crap by comparison)

I try and picture the running thing with the rotting corpses as something more supernatural. Because think about the saying, "When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth." I know that this was from the original but I think that there is something more to it in this film. Based on the zombies in the remake and how they can still run even after they are decaying to me, means that they aren't just some virus, they are supernatural in a way. It adds another oddly creepy aspect to this movie, and the Original films in general. That maybe god is punishing mankind because he is not happy with how humans have treated not only the planet, but each other. Or maybe it actually means that there is no more room in hell. lol kinda silly and strange but yet again, also weird and creepy to think about. XD Anyway, great review, I love this film.

Talking about this film having too many zombie movie tropes, wouldn't having made CJ (or some other faction) the human antagonist just been one more trope that the movie would have borrowed from? I actually thought CJ had one of the best movie redemption arcs. Personally, I'm tired of the whole "humans are the real monsters, not the zombies" way things work out in a lot of movies, which is probably why I was always such a huge fan of 'Return of the Living Dead' where characters of different types come together.

Dawn of the Dead was ahead of it's time when it comes to Consumerism. Plus the fact that it's a Zombie movie from the Zombie Godfather himself George A. Romero literally makes the CLASSIC Dawn of the Dead a 10/10 film for me. I love it that much. Renting it on VHS when I was a kid made me forever look at Malls as a "Safe House" for a Zombie Apocalypse. Setting the film in a Mall was Genius. I was so excited to see the remake of Dawn of the Dead. I got friends who I watched the original with to see the Remake as soon as it hit theaters... and I was bummed the first time to be honest. Something felt off... and it wasn't the Fast Zombies which I already had seen in 28 Days Later. I couldn't figure it out the 1st time... however I saw it a 2nd time in theaters and enjoyed it a lot more. I liked it as an action movie. When I re-watched the original Dawn of the Dead after seeing the Remake, it became clear what I loved about the classic.. THE ATMOSPHERE... THE CHARACTERS... THE DIRECTION... THE MUSIC. The original just had that cold Fall / Winter feel to it (they filmed in the Mall during Christmas break). The overcast skies mixed with Goblin's score just really worked for me. Also it focused on 4 Characters (which is why games like Left 4 Dead folllow that pattern). It was cool seeing them try to work together, and they seemed proud when they did something right, and boosted eachother's morale. Like when Flyboy did his research on the Mall's layout and showed Peter and Roger the ducts on the map... "I think it will work. You found it Flyboy" Peter tells Steven. SEE... I can actually remember the names from the orgiinal. I don't remember ONE NAME from the Remake. Not saying it's a bad movie. I appreciate Zack Snyder's love for Dawn of the Dead, and he even had really good cameos from the original actors. ALSO I think it's Zack Snyder's best movie and highly entertaining popcorn flick... it just didn't do anything for me. It made me feel nothing.

Mark Hazleton as a modern horror movie, Snyder's DOTD is brilliant I think. But zombie movies have changed so much in the past decade that its really hard to compare the two - take Snyder's film for what it is and don't compare it to Romero's classic and you'll be able to get something out of it

Rule 1 in the zombie apocalypse either go alone or in a group of no more than 4 and no one must be related because if one dies the other becomes broken and puts the group at risk

I do like the CJ character as he is good or bad. But agree he and the other guy could have been the bad guys. And when CJ dies could have been his way of redemption. Like they had to take him cause he had the keys to the boat or knew the name of it.
@criticalanarchist55336 жыл бұрын
scottieman2 - CJ could have been this crazy mall guard who takes boundaries on his turf seriously. In the movie he fould have done something that jeopardizes the main characters of the story, like being responsible for swamping the mall with zombies after he is locked up by said main characters. Would have been a better reason to leave the mall.

To me it's more of a reboot as opposed to a remake. Zombies and a shopping mall, that's really the only thing these two have in common.
